I just turned 18 earlier this year getting out of high school soon and decided to buy a new 400 for the summer I’m excited getting the money and deciding on gear for now!
Sorry to hear about it snapping, sounds frustrating. Cool bike. I understand you wanted a tighter clutch set up. As a note, my 2008 Ninja 250R is thankfully still going at over 35,000 miles with the original clutch set up, and still has the original chain (WD40 every time back) and engine. Only mod was a new exhaust and a frame skid bar.
Sorry to hear about snapped bolt. Just fyi.. German manufacture recommend replacing aluminum bolts every time you open them because these bolts stretch. Snapped a bolt in my Mercedes e500 when swapping a valve gasket. Had to drill it out.
Change my clutch springs. Used a Auto zone inch lb on My Kawasaki z 400 2022. Not a problem. Best oil is Amzoil. Went from dealership 48 mpg to 54 & now i get 59 mpg.
I’m about to do the clutch springs on my bike with an inch pound to branch and I’m afraid I’m gonna snap the bolts. Did you set it to the same torque setting as in his video?
I have never used a torque wrench, I'm old school, I have a feel for it. Now as for this situation, you might have had a bad bolt, that didn't require much torque to snap?
😢man thank you for this my heart hurts for you and I would be piss off to, I just bought my ninja 400 2023 a few weeks ago and it’s my first bike. Hopefully your still riding.
Inlb torque wrenches don't really click, they just kinda give a little. Watching that part of the video, you were already past your torque setting when you put the wrench on it. If you watch the first bolt the torque wrench gave (clicked) when you first engaged it and you pushed it another quarter turn.
If you are watching this video and you snap a screw, you DID NOT DESTROY YOUR CLUTCH. Take the head of the snapped screw and insert it where the stuck bolt it and you should be able to free the snapped screw. Ace hardware carries the exact screw so if you live close to one you can pick it up and fix the problem without ordering a new clutch basket
Bummer. I hope you get it squared away quickly so you can enjoy your bike sooner than later. And what a fun bike it is! I just bought one 2 weeks ago thanks to the info from channels like yours, and I couldn't be happier with it. Good luck!
Wow dude that same thing just happened to me while i was changing out my clutch springs on my 2018 ninja 400, wish i had seen this video. I was able to remove the remaining part of the screw that was stuck in the clutch hub. Unfortunately though, took the clutch plates out, i kept them in order. But after i put it all back together and turned it on, my clutch won’t fully disengage when pulled in, in gear. I still have yet to figure out why. Really sucks
Okay, so this was user error, not the torque wrench failing. If you look at the first bolt being tightened, you can see the torque wrench break and then he pushes wayyyyy past it. in-lb Torque wrenches require a few fingers to use, not your whole shoulder. That is why the bolt broke, not because of some faulty torque wrench. I speak from experience, having done this myself on a customer's vehicle while torquing a valve cover while working as an automotive technician.
@@HardcityRaindrops I’m serious. Slow down the first few frames of wrenching on the first bolt, you’ll see the slight break in the torque wrench before you even move your shoulder. You’ll see it, I promise.
Also, not to put too fine a point on it, you obviously don’t know what 100 in-lb feels like, else you wouldn’t have put your fucking whole shoulder behind a 1/4” torque wrench.
This is spot on! inch pound screws are typically pretty delicate. I try to use the smallest wrench possible to tighten bolts like that. Allowing me to "feel" the resistance before I ever apply enough force to snap the bolt. Generally speaking the bigger the lever/wrench, the harder it will be to feel the resistance of the bolt tightening past its threshold.
Out of curiousity were those the original bolts or they came with a kit? I noticed they look like the cheaper pot metal/sintered metal parts and not the shinier bolts made of stainless etc. I’m just really curious now, and if they came with a kit I want to be sure I test them first so I will probably drill and thread a hole in a scrap block just to check they’re not going to snap under the spec. Anyway lmk what company the bolts came from if you don’t mind. Thanks man, and good on you for posting this, happens to the best of us.
Happen to me first 9days of riding. Same bike. It was my fault. I was riding around NYC all day like in 3 or 4th gear without down shifting to 1st or neutral at red lights and stop signs. 700 bucks later to fix it and now I know better
OK then clutch master. What does the amount of clutches you’ve done have to do with using a torque wrench? Absolutely nothing. I need one that clicks like it should.
@@HardcityRaindrops Make me laugh. I'm gonna adopt this name: "Pollo The Clutch Master." Don't forget the practice with your torque wrench, Mr. Too Much Torqueee.
@@HardcityRaindrops you said you set the torque wrench to 89 inch pounds of torque. I thought that from watching other videos that the correct measurement is 81 inch pounds of torque? And yes, that does look like a torque wrench from the last century. I should know I am from the last century😂. Don’t they have digital torque wrenches now? back in ancient times, we just put washers behind the springs to beef them up and call it a day. just like sticking certain lengths of broom handles in the forks to make them stiffer.K.I.S.S… by the way thank you for your videos any information is helpful
Damn, sorry that happened to you. My bike has 350 miles so far. At 500 I'm putting Barnett clutch springs in. Wasn't planning on torque wrenching it on and definitely won't now.

No problem
I just turned 18 earlier this year getting out of high school soon and decided to buy a new 400 for the summer I’m excited getting the money and deciding on gear for now!
I wanted a stiffer clutch feel. Solution for me was adding a spring to the clutch linkage. I bought the spring at Lowe's for like 2 bucks.

Can u drill a small hole in the shank of the bolt and use an easy out to remove the piece inside of the clutch?
Drill a hole in the bolt and use an easy out. There is no pressure on the broken threads, may be able to use a small magnet and turn it out.
I don’t have all my stuff for that here, I’ll try to do that later after I get the new one
Use a bolt extraction kit. I had that happen to me and I was able to fix it later that day.

You have the pull rod and bearing in backwards then take another look at that the pull rod goes in last.
I wonder if could it be you went to fast while torque? Maybe it suppose to go very slowly , just a thought 🤔excellent video tho
