This was so beautiful I have tears in my eyes. Seeing how he touched those children is miraculous. He fed them everything they needed. Even if they don’t go into dance. What a gift.
I was in NDI from 1980-1983. Then Jacques recommended me to the School of American Ballet, where I studied on scholarship for five years. I was in attendance when Jacques had his final performance as a professional dancer, in "Apollo," appropriately enough. And more than that - He is singularly the most intuitively brilliant teacher I have ever known. My first paycheck was from NYBD, and I owe Jacques a lot.
Each Dancer may be drawn by the illusion and the story dance can tell. A gymnastics teacher I had was friends with a well know gymnast/coach Abie Grossfeld, who was friends with Jacques from their neighborhood in NYC. I was told that one day, talking about Jacques, Abie commented he was "crazy." When asked why? He said something to the effect of one could not know what Jacques would do next, He'll climb up a tree and throw a knife into the ground." Without an imagination, a dancer just becomes a technician. Yes, this man could jump and more. So much more.
