Ex BBC Sound Recordist here, one of the current scams affects the security of Kit when on Location. Neumann U87s swapped out for poor copies whilst in secure Hotel locations. Decades ago this was common for 16 and 35mm lenses, 20 years ago I saw it once with a Sennheiser hyper cardioid when the Mic had been sent to us in the NEC from a Football Game. Also beware of Company Accountants buying cheap Kit.
I am really worried for Shure. Their flagship products are being extremely aggressively counterfeited, and the counterfeits distribution is very broad and effective.
I just bought a fake sm7b for 57 euros delivered from ali express, sounds great, not as nice as a real SM7 (although I only have an original, not a B to compare it to) but still not at all bad for a 57 euro mic! the attention to detail with these fakes is staggeringly good, again the wires are the wrong colour but apart from that it looks exactly the same... however the REAL difference is the handling noise... hardly any on the real thing but the fake is incredibly noisy to handle... looks like the fake internal shock mount has a plastic ring instead of a rubber one... so I'd say the main thing to check with these mics is A) does it sound the same as a real one (or just good anyway even if it's not quite the same) & B) the handling noise.. otherwise they seem to be really good... I'm trying to find any kind of opinions of the beta 98 ad/c, I'd love one for my snare
Is this considered fake because Shure didn't sell it or because Shure didn't make it? We've had a lot of cases of "fakes" lately where its just a case of the factory who makes a product selling it directly to the consumer
I have experience of that but here it seems the capsule has identical capsule but different wire colours? Only a guess but I wonder if Shure source the capsule from an OEM source and they just made a pile more with enough difference to be 'not' Shure? Would different colours be enough? I think I have detected another small difference in the threads the basket screws onto. Slightly less turns? The fake one needs about one turn less from where the thread begins?
It is a counterfeit the instant it says Shure on the product while not being sold by Shure. I also don’t think Shure manufactures in Asia (I believe only US, Mexico, and Germany), so this wouldn’t be an OEM going rogue.
@@ThemFuzzyMonsters not quite. Tesco sold jeans made by wrangler but they bought them diverted from another country. Technically that makes them a grey import, but genuine. If you build something from spare, genuine parts is that a genuine product?
I bet loads are out there with unaware owners - The difficult bit is the castle, and it is identical as far as I can see, and the mounting I just can't see a difference.

Sounds like what Monoprice does. High end company has product made in China, once tooled up to make it and original order filled “fakes” are made.

I prodded one of the rubber mounts too hard ns it split but a dab of ca glue was fine
