Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.
Love it when someone says these types of shelves are really simple so anyone can build them; no they're not. It's only your good work ethic and attention to detail that makes it look easy. The hardest things to make and really look good are the simplest things, with no fancy molding to hide gaps and flaws. Great project. Total respect.
totally agree; he knows what he is doing and is very meticulous as you need to be for everything to line up. He makes it look simple, but until you try to make the cuts fit as his does, it is difficult to appreciate how challenging this can be.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Sir, that has to be the best done video I have ever watched. To the point, no stupid music and no excessive rambling. Beautiful shelving unit. New subscriber here. I am excited to start my unit. GREAT JOB!!!
At our shop here in Austin Texas, we use a woodworking app called Woodmaster to calculate all the shelving spacing for us when we build custom units like these. Very handy tool to have on hand.
I like your methodology when building, I've learned the same sort of things from my boss at our small cabinet shop. The last 5% is where most get lazy but its the most important. Great efficient building and great video, you just made another subscriber
It is finish that decides how it looks. A good finish such filling spaces, getting good registration and being square makes all the difference. It can make a simple project look very high quality.
I made a wall-to-wall bookcase in my office/library. I used a Kreg jig and it made it so much easier to attach the shelves to the vertical panels. I was very happy with it considering I had never made a bookcase before. I really enjoyed your video. You showed all the steps and no annoying high-pitched woman singing in the background. You inspired me to make a similar unit for my living room to surround our TV!
I am a hobbyist. What I do not understand (like ever) is how these masters can be so sure of right angle corners without using any right angle clamps. Great build. The video was a little too fast for me but I will have to watch it again anyway. So no problem. Thanks, Regards,
Also as a hobbyist.... I have always managed with angled corners by knowing the dimensions needed (e.g. 5" inner/outer). Also helps to use stop-blocks on the saw like in this vid.
Super nice .i love the illusion of thickness of the shelves .it makes a huge difference as opposed to a 3/4 " face . The video is also excellent your narration perfectly follows what is being seen without a bunch or pointless rambling .also good lighting .👍👍👍
I really like your videos they're informative, helpful, and edited well. I just wanted to comment on a safety concern that I noticed. When your using the table saw you should always use a some type of push stick (yours was on the fence). I had a shop teacher in high school Mr. Lamb (I will never forget) that showed us the proper use of a push stick on the table saw, at the end of the demonstration he held up his right hand that was missing half of his thumb. He asked if anyone had any questions. I'm not criticizing you , just addressing a safety concern. I subscribed today, keep up the great work.
When you planned down the face plates, you said it was for a reveal to help prevent cracking. Not sure what you meant, could of used a close up and explanation. Great video, really liked it
Wasn´t that simple... really fast work as flash does... but it needed a lot of planning and previous experience to make it as sover as it resulted...Thanks for sharing!!!... Greetings from Medellín, Colombia!!!!
Great Video. I'll need to watch this one a few more times. I learned a lot! Thanks for the post. Thanks for telling why you were working ON the table. Nice high ceiling. I couldn't help but think if you were going to do your cutting up there, why not put you saw on a small table? I figured it was due to limited dust collection hose length.
Very nice! I would sill recommend wearing a mask or respirator while sanding - no matter how strong the vacuum's suction is, tiny particles will still float in the air, and over time, damage your lungs.
Looks awesome! Great video! I'm thinking of doing a built in for my wife in out bonus room. No where near as tall but some of your methods here will be quite useful for that project! Great job!
This is such a great skill to have. I am not qualified to do this, but I might try something smaller to start. It's a really amazing & beautiful result.
I'm about to build something very similar to this for an extremely demanding client (my wife). It'll be my first major carpentry project, so it was great to see your process. One question, to you or the community: for something like this that's going to be painted and had most of the edges covered, what's the advantage of using solid wood over plywood, or even MDF?
Hi Bruce! My fiancé (my most demanding client) and I just bought our first home together. There were somewhat big things that needed to be done and some minor projects that we wanted to build. What I’ve learned, both from research and trial and error, is I think it has to do with grain and fibers of solid wood. With solid wood, you can sand it down and get a really clean and smooth finish. The others won’t be as clean of a finish. There also things to consider durability wise. Have fun and be careful in the shop!
Can you please tell me if you have the plans for this. I am a visual person, so it would help if I could see it. I can pay for the plan. I understand how much it takes to do that. If not, I have to have your video right beside me. Thank you for the simple directions and look.
At 14:14 he talks about the 1/8th in reveal on the front of the shelf, which means the shelf isn't going to be 3/4 in all the way through. He runs it through the planer at 5/8 in. Does this mean the shelf is thinner at the front?
How do you add a picture? I backed mine with flooring on 1/2 inch plywood (because I didn’t want to glue flooring to my wall) and screwed it into the studs. It looks great! Brilliant build, so easy!
It's a nice build! Liked the discussion of the little details to make it work in the long run. Too bad they didn't patch the wall before you installed the shelf tho. I assume your angle brackets are hidden under top plywood you nailed down. Screws might have been more functional just for that bit.
Hmmmm, well, I would say this would depend on the paint and how many layers of paint are there. In my experience, PVA glue still bonds well to a single or double coat of primer. If the paint is a high gloss with nothing for the glue to key onto, then, adhession isn't going to be very good. But if you use a modern high grab glue, super glue or a fancy two part glue, on a large surface area, then yeah, it won't make that much difference and if put under load until failure, it would probably pull the paint clean off the wood rather the glue joint itself fail.
Today’s price for a 1”x12”x8’ finger joint pre-primed is $65,00 at Home Depot. I am trying to building the same bookcase out of $60.00 stained (by me) plywood sheet. Curious to learn what the cost difference will be. DIY (weekend warrior)

It is still simple work that is very well made.
This video has really made me think more about building a shelf like this myself. It was very helpful.

Can you make something like this for a customer in the Austin area?
I like your methodology when building, I've learned the same sort of things from my boss at our small cabinet shop. The last 5% is where most get lazy but its the most important.

Fantastic video. I built your bookshelf with my brother in two day, start to finished painting. Thanks!
Awesome!!! I love hearing that!

Hey guys, can confirm this works great, have made 3 of these in time it took me to watch this video!
It looks like a thick solid wood was used. Amazing!
Super nice .i love the illusion of thickness of the shelves .it makes a huge difference as opposed to a 3/4 " face .

Very Impressive Job! 5 stars for your smart comments and walkthrough!!
Man, the story pole trick is just simply amazing, simple and time saver.. Kudos..!! :-)
Thank you! Its a great one itll help you all over the shop!
Thank you so much for this video, it has given me the confidence to attempt a "build-in" in my own home that I have wanted to do for some time.
Still early but I signed up for for your channel that is turning out to be the best so far and I’ve been viewing. Thanks
Nice work, great detail in your video. I have several shelving units to do in a new house and this gave me some great pointers! Thank you!
Excellent job for your client. More importantly for the rest of us, excellent explanation!
Excellent--you do a great job communicating!
Very nice work you've done! 👍🏻
I love the word simple 😁 amazing to know how to build that 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great project. Going into my saved list so I can watch it again when I attempt something like this!!!
Add some lightning on the shelves would be great too.
Here's a huge collection of woodworking plans: www.WoodPlanner. xyz

Whoa. That would look pretty cool, but ....dangerous. Maybe add the thunder for full effect?

Excellent project thoughtfully executed!
I just moved my upholstery business home and hope to make my garage look just like this!
Wasn´t that simple... really fast work as flash does... but it needed a lot of planning and previous experience to make it as sover as it resulted...Thanks for sharing!!!... Greetings from Medellín, Colombia!!!!
Well of course you did this quickly, and maximized your shop time. I only wish I could work on fast forward speed too!
Nice job!
Dude! You are a master! Great shelves! I wish you could build one for my house. :/
Well done, Nice video edit and nice wall Tv unit, I was curious to see how nail marks look like after sanding in a close up view though
18g brads gonna be pretty much invisible, mine usually are anyways .. nice execution of a very useful project ... 😎👍☘🍺
Really nice work. Very much like all your attention to the smallest details.
Great economy build. Nice video, no BS, all business.
I think its beautiful just like it is
That's awesome it came out great

Nice work, the cabinet turned out beautiful.

You do good job bro
excellent work and productivity!
Awesome build
Looks awesome! Great video! I'm thinking of doing a built in for my wife in out bonus room. No where near as tall but some of your methods here will be quite useful for that project! Great job!
Who in the world would need something that big.
This is such a great skill to have.
I am not qualified to do this, but I might try something smaller to start. It's a really amazing & beautiful result.
Nice build, thanks for the video

I’m wondering How much would cost something like that ?

Good work
Anyone know the price for all the lumber?
Good idea for using the U-shaped design 5:32
Great video!!! Now off to Lowes!
does wood glue work effectively when the board is painted like shown here?
No...once the wood is sealed the bond is no longer there. Nice looking, but poor quality without dados or raw wood build.
Hmmmm, well, I would say this would depend on the paint and how many layers of paint are there. In my experience, PVA glue still bonds well to a single or double coat of primer. PUSH STICK!
stop saw, don’t need one
But I’d still use one
Good video. Nice work. You’re a good craftsman.
Beautiful work!

looks great
Some puck lighting on those 4 inch shelves would been nice as well. Great build! Built in lighting that is
Superbbbbb.!!!!!!
Haré uno.
lovely job!!!!
Nice job!
Awesome video! Love your content! ⚔️
Awesome!
Are there any plans for this? Great video!
Beautiful work, how much does something like that cost?
I love particle board. Makes quality furniture
This was built from finger joint pine, not melamine shelving.
