I used to work at Toys R Us. Most people think that Toys R Us went out of business because of competition from online retailers like Amazon, but, surprisingly, that's not the case here. Toys R Us went under because of exceptionally bad management. In 2005 Toys R Us sold itself for $6.6 billion. This was a debt put on the company by the new owners, and it was a debt that Toys R Us was never able to repay. It was this sale in 2005 which led to the long path towards bankruptcy in 2017.
One of the reason why Garfield said Wyoming doesn't exist in the Garfield and Friends episode, "It Must Be True" is because Wyoming never had a Toys R Us.
2018 was the culling year which really ended Toys R Us fast in the United States, at the start of the year there were over 800 locations, but by the end of the year there were 0 remaining. They did come back with 2 new stores in 2020 only for them to close once more in 2021.
A thing I read said they're planning on having a total of 24 physical store locations open by 2024, which I don't think that means all the Macy's locations they have since I'm pretty sure that number is already higher than 24
They failed to downsize somewhat during/after the 2009 financial crisis, eventually catching up to them in 2017. Having a few Billion in debt, they failed to secure a buyer, and had to close almost 900 stores, their entire business.
@@Wolf-rk6jqBecause Walmart took Sears out because It had everything and since KMart was owned by Sears it took it down with them, if I understood correctly.

A lot of those states with only a few locations, have very low populations when compared to other states. Notice none were in Wyoming the least populated state. That's because the state population is lower than many cities. Both South and North Dakota are also low in population. Same with Montana and Idaho though both have recently become hot spots to move to. When you watch these video, you have to keep in mind how things were at the time. Like in the 90s and earlier 00s California was the place to move to. You would hear people making it seem like a big fancy dream to retire and move to California. Or to move to California and become a big a star basically over night. Come to California and you will always be the envoy of your friends with the latest fashion. You would hardly every hear a negative word about California. Compare that to now.
It’s not just overall population, but also population density. When you have a small population, plus that population is spread out over vast areas of land (rural West), a store struggles to draw in enough customers. The East Coast, Southeast, West Coast and Midwest are very different from the rural West.
