I don't think the RNG is a huge issue. Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, and Kid Icarus also have RNG elements that can make or break a run, but they're all included. I've emulated Punch Out and it's fine up until about Soda Popinski, then I have to start guessing when to dodge because input lag makes visual cues useless. The first two divisions could be in game though.

@@viniciusvks It's based on a actual NES cart and the retro speedrun challenges they bring up from time to time for their world championships. I don't feel like Nintendo tracks like that especially since snes championship has never been a thing. But considering they did kinda revive a 1990s concept in 2017-2024 you never know. I feel like it's such a niche market it's more likely to see an actual SNES championships tournament first before they'll try to make it into a game just like they did with NES. I wonder why the game is missing High Score challenges. Sure, there's a lot of speedrun challenges, but it's the whole game and some of them are, like Ryu said, braindead. Most last less than 10 seconds. There should have been a second mode on launch called High Score Mode, getting the highest score in a certain time limit.

As long as they add dlc every quarter, why wouldn't you play it once a week for 5mins to compete in the challenge? This doesn't need a massive time investment. It's like tetris 99. You play when there's an event. I love the game, and it's good to have on hand for friends

S rank seems to be based on a relative completion time to the length of the challenge as a calculated value, so the shorter the challenge the less the margin of allowed error. This feels like maybe it started as a release similar to the 99 titles and then they decided to try and make it a full pay release.

This was why I enjoyed The NES Remix games on the Wii U much more. I felt like they did this concept right. Its cool if they want to rip out a few identical moments from the old games, but make the challenges more involved, too many tutorial missions. I wouldve liked to see most of the game be remixed layouts of stages and enemies using the original game engines. NES Remix did this, from what I remember, so Im sure they couldve pulled it off. There is also much better games than some of these first party licensed NES games, if they wouldve gotten some licenses. Metal Storm, Little Samson,Contra, Bucky O Hare, Batman, Shatterhand,Jackal to name a few. No Punchout is a missed opportunity too. It seems like Nintendo has actively tried not to release Punchout challenges or games, even in some of the compilations theyve done, which is almost like what this is.

Leaderboards on any Nintendo game would just be hacked times of something like 1 millisecond everywhere.
I believe the best would be for some players to host a website with all the best user-submitted times with video proof, and add a "points" system based on your rank on each challenge. E.G: 1st place is 100 points, 2nd place is 99 points, 3rd 98, and so on.
The player with the highest overall "points" is the true champion. People would compete for the best times on each challenge and would try to lower the overall total time as a community. Just like it's done in Super Smash Melee's Break the Target community, or the Perfect Dark/Goldeneye community (The-elite net).
This could lead to some interesting competition at semi long-term. Though most challenges will be maxed out really quickly and impossible to improve further.

Number two they're giving you the experience of what other people had to go through when playing the original world championships. Actually they're giving you more of an experience because they gave you exactly what they went through and the actual world championships you would have just got three games. This is one of the novelty games they put out for people to have in the collect because the actual real cartridges for NES or very collectible. I was so close to visiting it at one point. Had xp with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama and movies like 'Akira' and 'Ghost in the Shell'.

I'd say I agree with you on all points. Challenges aside, the game needs a real live mode where you queue into a random lobby of other players with a random set of challenges and you battle it out. Afterwards you re-queue to get a new lobby and new set of challenges. So basically a never-ending and rarely repetitive live PvP mode. The challenges themselves need a lot of re-working...and can we just not have Ice Climbers and the balloon game at all? I don't recall anyone ever having either of those games when I was a kid (I'm NES generation).

This game is 450mb, that’s unheard of for a new game. If they want to support this, they can easily do so. I’d love to see the multiplayer challenges playable as speedruns in single player. The Legendary Trial has so much potential if they take that idea and expand it. Multiple trials, new ones every week, custom trials, make your own and post them for others to beat your time. I am so hopelessly addicted to this game, it’s such a surprise hit for me, and all based on your Live then S rank video. I bought it right away and I had no intention to buy this and I haven’t been able to put it down 🤘🏻❤️

I just bought the game last night and S ranked every challenge from the start of Mario 1 to the end of Donkey Kong, so far what I've noticed is that it seems way easier to get an S rank on the Master and Legend challenges than it does on Normal and Hard challenges, and the difficulty the challenges are marked with aren't always a good indicator in my opinion. The legend challenge for Mario 1 is speedrunning the whole game, while in Zelda 1 you just have to beat the first dungeon, which isn't even hard because the preview movie before you begin gives you the fastest route through the dungeon anyways.
I can only imagine the listed difficulty only pertains to actually clearing the challenge, cause you have to remember that Nintendo anticipates that people of all skill levels will be playing this game. The S rank grind probably wasn't high on their list of priorities I would imagine.

You made some good points - some of the challenges are boring.
Some of the boring ones do have a purpose - like the Mario going up the platform before a flag. For me I lose a TON of momentum trying to get up those dang platforms, so I like that there is a challenge where I can practice that one part of the game over and over again until I get better at making it up consistently without losing speed.
So at least in the case where the “boring” challenges prepare you to tackle something you will have to deal with in the big speed run, I am a fan.

I thought NES Remix 1 did a great job of adding structure, challenge, and variety to a lot of the early and simple NES games that really benefited from being spruced up. If it wasn't for the input lag, I'd go so far as to say that it's the definitive way to play a lot of those games. But in both NWC and NES Remix 2, I just feel like most of the interesting things these games have to offer are nowhere to be seen.

I bought a deluxe box and watching this makes me not even want to open it. The challenges should be MUCH longer. It would be more fun if the challenges included several objective so you had to optimize more. Roughly 1-4 minutes would be good imo… but anything that just takes a few seconds feels pointless. We’re competing for milliseconds? I’m not a speed runner but that honestly sounds super lame. It worked in NES Remix because everything was mixed up and it kept you wanting to unlock the next challenge to see what’s next. But if this is the entire game… naw fam. I probably won’t even open the box.
At the very least they could have included the full games to just play normally, or even compete like a regular speed run for certain categories. Idk but they missed the mark…

I thought that they would include more challenges where the general strategy works fine, but there's a secret strategy to doing it *way* faster. The one in SMB2 where you have to cross the gap and grab the key comes to mind. You can cover the gap much faster by skipping the flying carpet and jumping on top of the flying enemies. But you can still get an S if you use the carpet method.
