You're actually a rare wholesome, funny, talented and hardworking running ambassador and I'm all here for it. Any improvement in production is great, but let's not make that THE focus (and a downfall for many running content creators out there). People love you for your down to earth humble personality and what you stand for, everything else is extra. Wish you nothing but the best my friend.
Excellent reverse split training run. Hard to believe 30:30 is now a training run. Just a heads up on the rice. Buy a rice cooker. Every Asian family has one and it makes perfect rice. I started using one over ten years ago. The healthiest rice is wild rice. Brown rice is also good. The best white rice is Jasmine rice. I have no doubt that the rice included in your post race goody bag is a quality rice because in Japanese culture they thrive on the best. Good luck in your next 10k. The training methods you are using are very similar to what we did 40 years ago in University cross country. We would do 10 x 1000 on a golf course and from 800-900 was a killer hill with a 20% grade and our reward the last 100 flat. That speed work dropped PRs for everyone. The reason was it was coupled with a Fartlek which in essence was a fast tempo run compared to today. The key was the distance days at talking pace between what were on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday was another long run at talking pace if a Saturday race was for training. Four to five times during cross country were a real easy five or six mile shakedown before a targeted race. On Sundays was the longest run at talking pace. I don't know if you encountered other runners trying to run too hard on slow days where they would try to increase the pace to show they belonged. My one teammate was .3:44 1500, 4:04 mile, 14:07 5K and high 29s in the 10K. Undoubtedly with today's technology easily sub 4 mile, sub 14 5K and sub 3:40 1500. We did not have those great tracks and shoes back in the day. The best comparison was how well you did against other studs. The reason I mentioned him was because on long slower distance days some of our fellow teammates would always try to pick up the pace to try to race him. He was complaining to me who was his best friend and was at best 6th in one race but normally 8th thru 10th. I never scored but was on a team that in many race we went 1-7. Four years in a row all 7 runners in the top 10 in our conference. So we decided to take a late afternoon class on Tuesdays and Thursdays that conflicted with the time of practice. We went to the head coach and got the approval to start an hour sooner. Some of these guys wanting to show they belonged complained that we started earlier. The coach told them it was due to class conflicts and that was a valid reason. Over three years our rule was I would run a half stride behind him and never force the pace. He credited me with having him tested for big races and I credited him with my PRs. We talked about not leaving our best races in practice. We had a supporter that was a professor in anatomy and physiology who also taught fitness classes. He was a member of the 1956 US Olympic Marathon team having a 2:17 best. He taught us a lot about what are bodies would go thru from an anatomy and physiology perspective. He charted out every practice and would show how things worked and didn't work and why. Now the best runners and teams have a person like this monitoring them daily. I hope you have access to this type of expert.
The rice cookers that you can buy here in Japan are pretty idiot proof. If you can run all of those marathons - you can master the rice cooker. You can make some fantastic meals in them as well - rice goes in first and then layer veggies and salmon or chicken on top and set it to cook and it is so easy. You could eat straight from the pot if you wanted. A rice cooker is a great buy.
It’s more the time efficiency factor - it’s hard to beat those 2 min packets 😂 Those all in one cooker meals do sound good tbf, might have to give that a go!
Came here to say this! Home cooked food is probably healthier than packets? @RunToJapan you collecting bags of rice remind me of Dr Chiaki Ono in When the Last Sword is Drawn collecting bottles of Saki.
Rice cookers are really easy. Wash the rice until it goes mostly clear. Then add water to about one thumbnail above the rice (this is for about 1/2 - 1 mugs worth of rice). Set to cook and wander off. Note, do not put rice cooker under fire alarm.
Did you see that you are the favorite UA-cam from Matt Fox? A big community, hopefully give you more views. Your content is great, very good quality and good tone. And I can tell you I am watching everything on UA-cam related to running. 😅 So it is just matter of time.
Well Done Jake!!! You are giving to me a great motivation and try to come back to run a decent pace!!! I'll try to be back on 33' for the 10km !! you 30'30" it was looking so easy and I wish I could perform like that. Well done again and keep going with the hard work !!
Congrats on the win!! Appreciate the camera investment but it is your content, presentation, personality, editing, sense of humor, craziness, unique takes and what have you that makes your videos brilliant viewing!! Your last vid promising Scran-to-Japan segments and more niche, obscure Japanese training info really whet my appetite!! 😁 And yes do get a rice cooker!! 😆
Loving your videos mate. Glad I got in from the start as I reckon you are destined for big things on UA-cam. Will have 100,000 subscribers before you know it!! The fact you just casually dropped that you trained with Rory Linkletter was pretty cool.
Favourite UA-cam channel for sure. Really inspiring and an awesome role model. Great to have a channel my kids can enjoy too. Love the energy and positive vibes you have! Your house will be full of rice soon!
I’ve watched a few of your vids now and have become a big fan. You definitely have a lot of talent. I will be following your journey. If you want it, I truely believe you can go pro. Let’s gooo!
I think you actually ran past us the other night. We were walking back from Shinjuku park tower to the yoyogi area. Small world and keep up the good work.
Thank you for the inspirational content! Motivating me all the way from America! You have a fantastic style of videos, thank you for motivating and entertaining us!
Congratulations🎉 I love watching your video. You have such a positive attitude and are incredibly hardworking. Using the rice for squats was hilarious! Keep up the great work.
I lived in Tokyo in the 1990's and my running took another level. Running around Yoyogi and the imperial palace. Your videos brings back nice memories. Gambate!!!
Your channel has lots of good stuff: good running content, Japan as an interesting location, plus, the best of all, you're so likeable. I suggest buying a small rice cooker because I seriously doubt that the microwave stuff is any good. It's easy and quick to use a cooker.
Keep smashing it mate! Congrats on breaking that curse of serial 2nd and bagging that win! I feel proud to witness this whole journey!! And you not only winning a race but also getting a nihongo jouzu haha
Wonderful result 🎉 Great video and Awesome training! Well done on all fronts! The English subtitles and little interactions in Japanese are a great addition. Well done on the language learning!
It's great you are not taking brand deals. So many running influencers sell out, and I do get tired of watching the products they promote, under the guise of shoe reviews, etc. Fantastic time for the 10k, you were flying on the second half, so a great wind assisted negative split. You are an absolute legend!
Get some swag for us to buy, you are the best running UA-camr I know of by FAR. There should be some made in Japan tshirts you can get going at least. I have a couple from mountain huts in Japan that are made in Japan there should be something
Hi,I’m so proud of the progress you’ve made so far. And congrats on the win!! Content wise, maybe you could consider doing some shoe reviews? For example what shoes you wore to take your first dub.
Cheers buddy! Good idea but I see so many UA-camrs already doing shoe reviews and it’s not something I’m that interested in - I prefer the actual running part than what’s on my feet 😂
Mate, this channel is awesome. Best running stuff out there at the moment. Have you thought about setting up a Patreon account so we can support you with some dolla?
Thanks mate! I actually just switched on the donations feature on UA-cam and had a few legends send some cash already. I’d back something like a Patreon in the future but atm I just don’t have the time to make extra content for it
Early Sunday morning here in suburban Boston. Thank you for entertaining me while coffee. You are going to take this UA-cam far my friend. People like me are living vicariously through you. Seems like you got some Maurten product incoming 🙏
My ferritin (iron) level is starting to rise slowly, it’ll probably take a few months to get to fully normal levels but defo heading in the right direction!
Congratulations with your win! I'm so astounded you can still talk clearly into the mic at those speeds. Maybe you'd consider doing a lottery-esque giveaway for the small/medium gloves and other attire that don't fit you for your subscibers (and, who knows, maybe patrons if you'd ever be up for that).
I’ve got a collection of random stuff from races that I’m very happy to giveaway. Would probably have to be to Tokyo based subscribers (or ones travelling here) cos of the shipping! I’ll have a think how to do it
@RanToJapan yeah, I figured shipping worldwide was out of reach based on your current income from this channel! Ah well, your Tokyo based subscribers are in luck then. Gonna pester you about worldwide shipping once you reach half a million subs though!
Bro, I am as culinarily challenged as the next guy, but a rice cooker is really pretty easy. Rinse the rice off, put it in the pan, put the same amount of water in, and press the start button. Like its not something challenging like a box of mac and cheese or something.
Congrats on the win. 30:30 is flying! Surely you can just stick the rice in boiling water, and then afterwards stick it in a wok with some Japanese sauces? Weights pretty useful though 😂 The other thing, maybe sponsors are hesitating being associated with the train harder not smarter tagline? It’s a brilliant and funny one but you can see why they might be.
Yeah but how long does that take to boil… you just can’t beat the packets for efficiency! Actually had plenty of brands interested - it’s just whether I’m interested in them 😉 I’ve got couple good ones in the works atm though
Hopefully you can find a sponsor that will actually pay you some decent money. Then you can live off the sponsorship and plough all your winnings and UA-cam back into great content and improving your performance!
Money direct from God for your great work!
What a hero - too generous! The rice cooker fund is filling up very nicely, thanks a lot! 🍚🍚🍚
Keep winning bags of rice to progressively overload your lunges. Genius.
😂😂😂
and if you're not ready to go on to more weight and you don't win more races there's no risk of overtraining!
😭

Great comment 🙏🏼
Very kind words! Really appreciate it mate 🙌🙌🙌
So wholesome seeing how interested the Japanese are about an English lad rippin' a casual win in a 10k race haha. Solid vid as always
Gotta love that support at races here! 🙌
Next investment has got to be a rice cooker. Keep smashing it mate
Love following this crazy adventure, genuinely some of the best running content out there, the race commentary at near 200bpm was impressive!
Yea, talking at that stage is insane!
Man it feels like a cheat to get this sort of content for free! Honestly my favourite running channel by far, you are so bloody impressive man
Not surprised there's sponsor interest. For running UA-camrs, your videos are the ones that really make me want to go outside and run big mile weeks.
Awesome to hear🔥🔥🔥
Love how you added the HR to the left corner so we can see the effort you're running at.
My favourite running channel on UA-cam by far at the moment. Look forward to the new video every week
Danke!
Jheeez thanks a lot! Much appreciated 🙇♂️

Always works!
