Just come back from there. New York was somewhat disappointing, talking about the city itself. It was lovely to be away for a few days and we enjoyed it but we found New York itself has gone downhill certainly since we were last there in 2011. It’s super expensive now, on a par with central London prices, if not more! And when you add on the required tip for practically everything it really adds up. The tip culture is something I don’t care for, because it’s expected at not at the discretion of the paying customer. Even if you leave what they deem to be the wrong amounts of tip in other words not enough, they make that known in no uncertain terms! Not nice. Minimum tip they expect is 20%, and up to 30% in some instances. That sort of extra on top of already inflated prices, not helped by the poor exchange rate makes it extremely expensive. We also found the streets very dirty and marijuana has now been legalised so every street corner stinks of the stuff! Not pleasant. The subway is an experience in itself, full of deranged weirdos. A lot of very threatening and intimidating people on the platforms and trains i have to say. I never feel frightened on the London Underground but I did in NYC. I’m afraid New York has gone back to where it was in the 1980s in my view. I’ve painted a very bleak picture but that said we still nonetheless had a nice time and enjoyed some wonderful food and got to see a play and did a little shopping etc so we’re still glad we went but shan’t be rushing back anytime soon. Will try other US cities in future.
@@ondelhylton8994 I understand that, but at the same time the pandemic was worldwide. I travel extensively through work and not every city has deteriorated to the extent of NYC. Manhattan is the sort of place where you really need to have eyes on the back of your head, because it does feel threatening and intimidating in many districts and the Subway is super scary! I go on the London Underground and I’m sorry but i never feel unsafe.
I don't speak as a native of the city but New York is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating, dynamic, energetic cities in the world. You really have to be unimaginative to get bored in New York. There are museums, art galleries, cultural institutions, festivals, fairs, music concerts, theater plays, dance performances, literary events, lectures, academic conferences, restaurants, bars, clubs, sports games, gyms, green areas, religious services, yoga and meditation studios and so on. Events and activities all year round. It is certainly a hectic, stressful city but I reiterate my point that it is decidedly not boring, it is in a league of its own along with London and Paris in terms of combining professional, educational, cultural and gastronomic options, of a sophisticated, international, cosmopolitan nature
The fact that this masterpiece only has 1,004,891 views while there are tik tok videos with hundreds of millions of views that are no where near as sweet as this breaks my heart.
