I have allowed myself to add Maria Saboya's Piano Technique in U Tube because the research Maria did in the last 30 years is remarkable !!! Maria Saboya's most OUTSTANDING piano technique is extraordinary. Those who had the chance to have a lesson with her know what I mean.
Many students came to her with all kinds of technical problems -- hand, wrist, back...blockages, etc., and I saw them cry when she took their blockages away and helped them to play fluently and smoothly.
Maria Eulalia Saboya de Albuquerque, born in Brazil, studied in America and France with great masters. She is a very discreet woman, totally devoted to piano and music. Her love of music made her into an OUTSTANDING humain being and a musician like no other.
This video is a short sample of her very special method.

Piano playing combines three major "techniques" -- centering, rebounding, and weight coordination. Centering asks for a great freedom of the hands, wrists and arms so as to move sideways and up and down very quickly and freely; Rebounding is a constant impulsion that moves the hands instantly all the time, and promotes immediate relaxation of hands and fingers at every second. Fingers should rest on the keys as long as they are not playing, just as the hammers do when they are not playing, they rest on the chords without moving. Weight coordination is a major capacity linked with energy, phrasing and meaning.

The physical side of the art of playing piano is extraordinarily interesting for us, however the general population don't have any idea of the behind the scenes work that goes into playing repertoire.

THE REBOUND TECHNIQUE IS ESSENTIAL IN PIANO PLAYING AT ALL LEVELS. IT HELPS TO RELAX, INCREASES THE SPEED, ASSURES THE COORDINATION IN EVERY ACTION, AND GIVES TO THE PIANIST A GREAT FREEDOM.

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation about the book "Piano Cantabile: Pédagogie pour un Piano qui Chante", written by the pianist Maria Saboya.
As a pianist and piano teacher, I had the opportunity to take lessons from her and observe her ideas and methods regarding the technical and musical aspects of piano playing. Her knowledge, abilities and skills are extraordinary and she helped me a lot to broaden significantly my knowledge on technical and musical matters. Her pedagogical method is unique and incomparable to any other method that i am aware of, making this book a must have for any piano student and teacher who wants to master the genuine way of piano playing. Therefore, I give my highest recommendation.

Dear Maestra! Is there any necesity in lifting up the fingers so much as the young man does at 03:34?

    • @MariaSaboya
      @MariaSaboya  7 років тому +2

DEAR ALEX, in the particular case of that student, that exercice was necessary because he had started to learn piano very late. His tendons were too tight so that he did not have real freedom of his finger movements. In doing that exercice he would improve the flexibility of his tendons and liberate his fingers.

      Mme Saboya,
      Bien cordialement.
      P.

Merci, Philippe.

  • @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton

The music itself creates the technique needed to implement it. Technique is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. Watch McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock....

    • @MariaSaboya

THAT IS ABSOLUTELLY CORRECT. BUT WHEN A BODY HAS NOT THE CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO THE INSTRUMENT THE PIANIST CANNOT BE FAITHFUL TO THE DEEP REALITY OF A PIECE OF MUSIC. THE BODY OF A PIANIST MUST BE FREE AND PERFECTLY ADAPTED TO THE INSTRUMENT. THEN HE CAN PLAY REAL MUSIC. ALL WE DO IN MY SCHOOL IS TO FREE THE STUDENT BODY SO THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO FREELY EXPRESS THE MUSIC. YOU CITE PIANISTS WHO HAVE AN EXCELLENT COORDINATION ON THE PIANO. THIS QUALITY DOES NOT COME TO LIFE WITHOUT A LONG PREPARATION OF THE FIRST INSTRUMENT WHICH IS THE BODY ITSELF. IN MY SCHOOL, "TECHNIQUE" MEANS "WAYS TO LIBERATE THE BODY" TO ALLOW THE PIANIST TO CONQUER HIS INSTRUMENT AND THEN PLAY WITH ALL HIS PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL CAPACITIES.

    • @juancpgo
      @juancpgo 7 років тому

“You don’t learn any kind of shit like that naturally. That’s something somebody teaches you, like when you teach someone how to play an instrument correctly. After you’ve learned how to play your instrument the right way, you can turn around and play it the way you want to, anyway you hear the music and sound and want to play it. But you gotta first learn how to be cool and let whatever happens happen.”
      Miles Davis (from his Autobiography)
I think there is a lot of value in learning technique, and in practicing technique by itself (isolated from music content). The thing, is that, like other subjects as nutrition and economics, as important and useful as it is to TRY understanding it (technique), it's incredibly complex, there is no easy and exact answer for these things. So, there are various approaches for piano technique, like there various approaches to nutrition and how to deal with your body. You have to learn as much as you can and think for yourself. But don't think that technique is ”embedded” in the music, you will miss so much incredible knowledge, so many “eureka” moments that you get when you think about technique seriously. I like to read a lot about technique from various sources and collect all kinds of technique exercises in a workbook, then at the end my body will learn to do things in various ways, and finally combine all the knowledge into efficient playing. I like to practice all ways possible, instead of a single way.

DO AS YOU WISH MY DEAR JUAN ! YOU ARE FREE, FREE, FREE ! FREE YOURSELF, FREE YOUR BODY, AND MAKE YOUR MUSIC EXPLODE FREELY ! THIS IS WHAT I TEACH TO MY STUDENTS. IT IS NOT EVEN TEACHING..... IT IS MOSTLY ERASING CONDITIONNINGS....
