Winter Camping and Finding a Plane Crash

- Backpacking & Solo Winter Camping in search of a 1954 commercial airline crash near the summit of Mt Success in the White Mountains.
For this 3 day, 2 night camping trip, I headed up to a lesser traveled corner of New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest for some snowshoeing, camp cooking, and bit of New England aviation history.
My goal for this adventure was to find the resting place of Northeast Airlines Flight 792, which crashed on approach to Berlin Municipal Airport during inclement weather on November 30th, 1954. It made contact in the dense trees near the summit of Mt Success at an elevation of 3,390 feet.
The 7 mile hike to get there would require a gross elevation gain of roughly 3,700 feet on potentially unbroken trail in deep snow. The final portion of the hike would be an unofficial bushwhack through dense trees and snow. For this reason, I chose to break up the approach up by setting up camp at roughly the halfway point along Gentian Pond and the nearby lean-to shelter with sweeping views of the Carter-Moriah mountain range. After camping for the night, I would head up to the top of Mt Success, the first peak of the Mahoosuc Range and the Appalachian Trail's gateway to Maine. After a few miles and a couple thousand feet of ascent with my snowshoes, I would leave the trail behind in search of the DC-3.

This is a beautiful two level wooden lean-to with one of the best views from inside that I've ever seen in a backpacking shelter. There is a bear bin out back, a composting privy, and easily obtainable water available by the nearby pond. There are several tent platforms behind the shelter as well. Fires not permitted.

Bushwhack towards the DC-3 plane crash site
The ground was covered with snow when I was there, but in warmer months there should be a faint, but visible herd path going into the woods in the open area just before the summit of Mt Success.
Once you're back in the woods, look out for yellow blazes indicating the AT boundary. The DC-3 is coincidentally right along the boundary. In my case, the snow on the trees and darkness limited my ability to follow these, but they should be more obvious in the daytime without fresh snow conditions.

Thanks! Looking into these flights can get addicting.
That was awesome...thank you
However can also be found in your split frames. Lol Thought I was trippin for a second. Cool Easter egg. Had to slow it down on my iPad and use my phone to video in slow motion then with it paused I could scan each frame so I could screen shot. Thank you for what you do. Love your videos
The plane was unsettling to see on video but to see it in the dark in the middle of winter, alone, must have been really weird. I’m not lyin when I say as I watch some of your videos I take solice in knowing you lived to post the video lol. Epic and awesome as always.
@@barb61 now that I know he is not dead, I will watch the video again
Nothing like watching a man hike in the snow up a mountain trail while I'm safe at home in the desert under a fleece blanket sipping a hot coffee.
Wow other earthlings r doin the same exact thang as moi 😜
Northern Wisconsin here, our outdoors looks like this. I'm not saying it's awesome but, it's pretty awesome! Have a good day.
im like you but i was jealous of him
I am in bed with my electric blanket watching him sleep ing outside in thcolow.d Strange world.
This was the most compelling hiking video I've seen. Very nice job!
Out of all the dozens of hiking and camping vloggers I follow, your channel is still the best - many thanks for the effort you put into sharing with us
This is why we watch your videos! So informative and your always realistic . That had to be really hard, you did it! What a trek! Anticlimactic-not! You carried us all to that somber place under extreme conditions, this is the kind of stuff that make you take pause. I felt for those people and their families.
Great video. ❤️
Kudos to Sarah on the food too! It’s always enjoyable to see what she has for you to cook! Top notch!
I've watched almost all of your videos, and I'd like to thank you for all the extra work you do to take us along! Getting great camera angles, then having to back track to get the camera adds a lot to the video, and is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Patrick. Happy to hear that you're enjoying them.
Geez! You are courageous! Oh heck no! No way hiking in the dark, alone, off trail?🥺 This is the most suspenseful movie I’ve ever seen.🥶
Blaìr Witch Project 2.
Great job on this video. I had cold chills when you showed that fuselage. Thanks for taking many of us to a place we'll never have the opportunity to go.
Excellent filter adjustment! Awesome map overlay, airplane crash report, and great sound effects for the prop engines.
🌲🦅🌲thank you for sharing your video today stay happy and healthy out there🌲🦅
Thanks, Brian. Same to you!
As a New Hampshire native who lives in Virginia I love these trips you do up there. Makes me miss living there. Awesome channel by the way!
I'm from Maine, and these help me cope.
Especially in winter.
As a kid in the 50s, I spent most all of my Summers, all summer, camping at Dolly Copp. So I thought I had hiked every Trail in the Whites. But not this one. Can't wait to try it, at least as far as the shelter. Thanks! Think I'll wait till spring, though....
NH boys stand up.
your really when out of your way and off the trail to film this. thank you! really appreciate the effort and great content you consistently put up!
I have that same jacket, my son bought for me when he went through Air Force base camp. Love it. Thank you for your service.
I haven't served myself. Mine is from a surplus store near Dover AFB, but it's a great piece of gear, for sure. One of my favorites.
Wow, that was one really nice adventure, I’m so glad we didn’t get lost. Yes, I was worried, I have no sense of direction. I really enjoyed going along. Best time ever. Thanks. 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
My gf and I accidentally found this crash while camping 2 years ago, very awesome 🤙
Wow man. I follow you on your adventures as I'm a hiker, climber and a mountaineer too, but also a licensed pilot. I also did aircraft maintenance, flight dispatch and worked for a major airline for 10 years. I left the aviation industry 15 years ago, but aviation is still in my blood. Seeing this mostly intact DC 3 gave me goose bumps. It's like walking into a grave. I never knew that there's something like that in the Whites. Awesome vid man!
It was quite a surreal experience. I can only imagine how much more so it would be for someone with actual experience in aviation. I apparently walked right past it in the dark. I decided to turn around and after a few feet I stopped to mess with my camera. I looked up and it was right there. 8 feet from my face, in the dead silence of the woods. One of the strangest feelings I've ever had.
@@sintax77 LOL, man, reading what you just wrote gave me the goose bumps again! That is spooky! It actually makes me want to hike up there and find this myself one day. Who knows, maybe?
@@plsniper maybe? MAYBEEE??? NO MAYBE JUST DO IT!!! You only live once. Have a good day.
First time watching. Quite a trek. And interesting to see crash site. TY. I read all 13-14 pages. Pilot error, it seems.
OK, I've said it many times before...but...my favorite Sintax adventures are: Solo (check), Winter (check) New Hampshire (double bonus points), Night Hiking (open a nice Bordeaux!). Thank you for another great trip, commentary and edit. And, THRILLED to see you hit that 1mm mark on the last one!
Haha. Thanks man!
Your videos are some of the most peaceful things I've listen too in a while
Wow that's one of the most difficult trips I have watched you do. The Whites and Mount Success are difficult in good conditions but going off trail in the dark.....man I don't know if I could do that. So remote and so cold. Thanks for risking it for us. It bet that cheese burger was particularly good.
25 years of wilderness Search & Rescue in Pierce County WA. Seen a lot. Nice 1st crash. Awesome history. Thank you!
What a hike! Thanks for taking us along! Love to the families of that flight ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love when you come to NH its cool to learn stuff that i didn't even know about too.
I love how you take the camera with you on the trail and narrate along the way. It is the best way as we see what you see. Others place their camera, then walk past it, then they have to run back to get it and stupidness like that. Makes watching more enjoyable. Kudo's to you!
That always got me to. Like you just walked passed your camera a hundred yards ago then turn around and go back and get it.. That's dedication!! Lol
@@Lilmickcrocodiledundee0001 Yup.. Then they gotta go home and edit. Editing alone is a lot of work!

Can't tell you how much I love your adventure vids. It is special for you to take us along.
Amazing adventure! The snow filled trees are gorgeous!
When we camped as a kid, we used Kleenex in the percolator basket. I never knew there was another way. It was the 70s and nothing was better than the sound it made as it bubbled to life. Smelled so good.
Yeah. Percolators made a really great sound. I miss it.
@@lorismithokon9028 I don’t use anything else, they’re still available
@@robinrussell3705 I need to go get one!
That scared me. When you can't see anything but snowfilled trees...geeze!
I haven't been backpacking since 1997 on the AT in NC. The sound of that Optimus stove brings back fond memories.
Very cool!👍🏼
Happy to see another vid up on the channel, great hike and content. Many props on some epic campfire meals - makes me re-think my on trail food choices. Rock on, sir, rock on.
Always a goodnight for another Sintax video
Been watching you for years and now here you are in my backyard. Literally. Welcome to Berlin!
Thanks, Mark. I love it up there. It's an amazing area :)
Enjoyed your trek to the plane.
I forgot to give you a thumbs up until I saw the in memory of, I then made sure to click all the bells and whistles for you sir. Have a good day.
Always look forward to your videos. Knocked it out of the park with this one. Appreciate the hard work. Go Flyers!
Very cool. I know it's not how you planned it but being out there at night made it even better.
Great video. I appreciate you dedicating the episode to their memory, rather than simply treating it as a playground, like many others do with these types of sites.
Blasted the Like button. The food, what a wife. That wreck, spooky on your own, must have been terrifying for all.
I thought the same thing! In the middle of nowhere 😬
That was a proper adventure!
Really injoy you video. Great winter Adventure. Thanks for sharing this with us. 👍👍
Super excited to watch this! I live very near where that happened, and visited it just this Fall. If you're ever visiting the Mahoosuc Range again, let's go hiking!
One third of the way through, this started to look like "found footage"....😆.
Really enjoyed that, thanks!
Enjoyed the video! Pretty cool to see the site of the airplane crash all the way back in the wilderness.
Hey Steveo, what a surprise to you watched this. I’m in Boca now but those are my home woods. Hiking and camping and snowmobiling. I hope someday you can go up and explore the White Mountain region of NH.
You're killing me with the cheesesteaks; 9th & Passyunk in the woods, priceless.
Wow ! You are either one of the most courageous individuals I have come across here on UA-cam, or one of the craziest ! I can't decide which one :) I must say I admire your obvious hiking skills and experience in the bush, but everything you did is what they taught me not to do in my college back packing and mountaineering course. Never hike in an unfamiliar area at night and never deviate from the trail unless it is in an area you are well familiar with - You did both ! Lord forbid you should take a fall and injure yourself up there in the mountains in the night ! Now that would be a horrible situation to be in - I am happy your night time visit and hike back to your base camp ended well for you. I really feel for the crash victims. What a horrible experience they went through.
I totally agree Mark! I could not image going BACK DOWN the mountain to base camp in the snow, pitch black alone in those temps and conditions! This is asking for trouble. No let me readdress begging for trouble. The wreckage of the plane didn't weird me out at all. But the journey in the dark alone and the trek back downward alone DID! Please people don't do this as a textbook way to accomplish! But, I did give the video a thumbs up for survival and great scenery however not for the correct form of adventure. Not judging! Just trying to prevent someone else's misfortune. Happy and safe trails!
Another great trip and video, love watching these and looking forward to my own adventures in winter backpacking. Got that aeropress a year ago and it’s really a great backpacking gourmet coffee maker ... thanks for the video!
Holy crap, backpacking cheese steaks? Your wife loves you SO much! That might be the best damn wilderness meal I've ever heard of.
hammer11235 Check out Chef Evan Outdoors.
Very cool man. I love winter backpacking in the whites! Always an adventure 🤙
Thanks for taking the time to film and post this.
The moose eat the bark off those trees, deer rub the tree for territory I believe. Beautiful scenery your in!
Excellent hike and very interesting destination! Thanks for taking me along.
Totally cool! I havent been physically able to hike in a few years. Thank u so much for sharing!
Excellent vid. Love your excursions but this one has a real history bonus. Thanks Sintax77!
I see snow camping, I'm watching! Keep it up.
As you pull out your food and start frying the onions, I am carmelizing my onions for stew on a Sunday. So I have smell-o-vision, sort of. Beautiful place. Love having your video to watch.
Weird little flash of the accident investigation at 10:33 right when sintax says "look" hahaha I thought I was onto some sort of imbedded clue.
Also at 10:49
Sneaky. 🥸
I saw it too! I was trying to pause it but couldn’t get it
Glad to see I wasn't the only one trying to pause it on the image!
yes me too I slowed it down so I can read it
My father travelled on that Northeast Airlines route in the late 1940's (Boston-Concord-Laconia-Berlin). A Northeast DC-3 is the first airplane I ever saw. In those days, you could walk your father to the plane, then go back 50 yards or so (behind a chainlink fence) and watch the takeoff. I still love those old DC-3's.
You definitely have a lot of beautiful views up there
I'm pretty sure you will be able to find this plane as well even knowing and some of the video snippets that you've shown it is definitely a very difficult trail and winter bushwacking is no easy task
Again excellent video glad you made it out safe and sound and you have yourself a good night
Awesome video! Glad I watched it. You definitely worked hard for that cheeseburger.
Certified INSANE!!! Thank you for sharing this adventure with us.
Your last two winter videos were probably your best winter ones ever which includes this one.
This is why I love your videos Sintax77, an epic adventure doesn’t have to have epic distance or elevation! You capture everything so well and really convey the feeling of the moment. And of course it’s Cheeseburger Time!
They say you should learn something new every day. Today was the meaning of thematic... thanks!!!!
My favorite three words, "I don't think." ! That sometimes is the perfect explanation for crazy things we do!🤣🤣🤣
Finally had time to finish this one up! I think this is one of favorite videos. It's always hard to film in the snow but you took it the extra mile and pushed to your goal and still made an exciting video!
Enjoyed this sooooo much. Well chilled after watching this. Stay safe from across the pond. 🇬🇧
winter wonderland i love New Hampshire! thanks for the video!
I was kind of expecting you to report weird dreams the morning after the visit to the plane. Thanks for sharing the story.
Wow! I was scared for you, I would have turned around at dark. Enjoyed the podcast with JK and Jeremiah. Double dose of Sintax77 this week!
Creepy stuff right there. Great too see/hear you on The Backpacking Podcast. Those guys are a lot of fun.
Reminds me of the trails around Big Cabin in NC heading to the AT. There is an old AF fighter crash sight we checked out.
Impressed! Making very good movies, and superb storytelling in all aspects. Greetings from Sweden, Ostergotland
Thanks for sharing Shaun, I enjoy watching your “history hikes”. 👍
Great video. I may steal this adventure later this summer. BTW, the amount of backtracking you do, especially on some sketchy or tough terrain, to get high quality shots for us is not overlooked. Thanks!
Great video, when you do sketchy stuff like that I wish Trail killa was with you for an extra person
Thanks for doing these vids.I miss my vacations to the USA.Watching your adventures keeps me sane in this ridiculous uk lockdown.
Wow what a great watch this is, fairplay ploughing through that snow on foot.
Great Video. Thanks for taking us on the adventure. Must have had a lot of backup batteries for the Lighting and Gear!
I needed this tonight.
Dude...that was pretty badass. Glad you made it back to the shelter safely. 👍🏻
Such a framed photograph!!! Haha glad you have the filters!
It does seem " a little weird to be off trail completely after dark". Could be a recipe for a bad situation, but you seem to know how to handle yourself in a sketchy situation. Good vibe to find the crash site in the dark though. Certainly adds to the mystique of the video.
Basic training
Wow! Just randomly came across this video and then checked out your channel. Looks great! I cant wait to check out more of your videos. I am only a few minutes into this one but really enjoying it. I kinda like the fact there is no background music because I actually like to hear the snow crunching and the birds twittering.
I am especially looking forward to watching your hike with dog videos as I like to do everything with my dog (hike, camp, mountain bike). Looking forward to your tips and gear vids too, information is always helpful!
I'm 2 hours west of Montreal..I'm in Ontario.. We get about the same weather it seems.. I absolutely love watching your winter back packing videos...been binge watching as I'm a fairly new subber...
Thanks, Joanna. I believe the Alberta Clipper is one of the 3 weather systems that converge on the White Mountains, which I believe comes down through the Montreal area on it's way to NH.
@@sintax77 i have heard in one of your videos that you are in Pennsylvania? Most of my realitives are in P.A., I'm from a little town called Mt Holly, close to Camden, Burlington...that area...Im living in Canada with good old American roots... :)
Nice, so you should appreciate the cheese steak homage. :) Yup, we're not too far from there.
@@sintax77 oh yes....cheese steak is the best...I used to drive across the border in a small town in New York state just for their Philly steak ...The U.S has some of the best tasting foods... :)

Thank you for another quality video.
Thanks for the great video! Choose larger snowshoes for light, powdery snow - they will help keep you afloat. You can go with smaller, more compact shoes for hard, packed-down snow. For steep, icy surfaces, use smaller snowshoes as well. I’d suggest when buying/renting them is get a weight limit of more than you weigh.( because you’re going to be carrying a pack with supplies,) regards from Yellowknife 🇨🇦
Solid tips. Good looking out! 👍
I get the best of both worlds, using the MSR showshoes with the removable tails. Manoeuvrability when the snow is firm, flotation when it's powdery.
The snow in New York and New England isn't usually that powdery, you can usually get by with smaller snowshoes than they recommend. It's not like the Rockies. We get a lot of wet sticky stuff. and a lot of hiking in mixed conditions.
So, here I am, in Philadelphia, watchin this and googling to see where the White Mountains are near Canada, just as you start making a Philly cheesesteak with real Amoroso's rolls..."it's a small world, after all..."
Two vids in one week. You’re spoiling us! Lol😂. Seriously good episode.
Very cool thank you so much this is awesome
I really enjoyed this video! Very interesting! Glad I found your show on UA-cam 👍
love seeing you doing this .I live in New Hampshire. You should look into lost nation NH. some white mountain trails around this area
