That little "turn left" reference was absolutely sublime. Cheers....
Bernard Cribbins would have a been a phenomenal Doctor
Is there any question to which Cribbins is not the best possible answer?
A brilliant one
Absolutely! I would have enjoyed seeing that!
he would've been what ncuti is, having fun, dancing around, all of that fun!
Agreed
The people in the comment section saying Whittaker and Gatwa were hired because of gender, race and DEI and not because of their skills don't know what they're talking about. This video proves it and it's been proven before this video was even uploaded, and a female Doctor was planned back in the 80s.
Ian Flemming isn't the only link between 007 and Doctor Who. You have Timothy Dalton, who play Rassilon in the End of Time. On top of that You had Pierse Brosnan. Before he took over the role from Dalton he was best known, here in the states, for playing the title role on Remington Steel, a detective show where he starred alongside Stephane Zimbalist as his business partner/love interest. In the second season finale of Remington Steele Tom Baker shows up as a rogue interpole agent turned theif. On top of that Jon Clease took over the role of Q during Brosnan's tenior as Bond. Prior to that Clease cameod in the City of Death.
And if you include the crew and stunt team there's a bunch more.
Here's a fun one: In Revenge of the Cybermen the secret transmitter disguised as a hairbrush used to contact the Cybermen is a prop originally made for Live and Let Die which was stolen by Roger Moore and sold to the Doctor Who production team by him.
@@heymcgurk really he stole the prop? You're not sure that they didn't just let him have it?
By the way before he was in the Saint and was cast as Bond, Moore replaced James Garner on Maverick as Brett's cousin Beau.
I think you missed the point.. lol
Loved seeing clips of previous acting jobs for the first four Doctors. A whole lot there I'd never seen before. Thank you!
you might like the William Hartnell film "Murder in reverse".
it is often shown on the Talking Pictures TV channel.
3:37 WOW! Tom Baker worked on dismantling a Chitauri Leviathan and other Chitauri technology from the battle of New York! No wonder he was perfect to play the Doctor 😳😆
I had absolutely no idea Troughton was the blind guy in Jason & the Argonauts, mind blown!!
He also had a horrible death in the omen.
“John Pertwee keen to play a more serious role”. My primary memory is of him being attacked by a curly telephone wire.
this had me actually laughing out loud
Or dressed as a cleaner in the Green Death.
As an American the Doctor character to me has always been as British as Robin Hood and Sherlock Holmes. An American cast as the Doctor would utterly destroy the magic the show has maintained these past 60 years. I'm really loving this new Gatwa era so far and the NP Harris and J Monsoon villains were next level !
But how did we end up with a John Hurt war doctor?
Pre pol lit ic cal hire days.
@@illbeyourmonster1959 "Political hire" this does not exist.
We ended up with John Hurt because Moffat wouldn't bend to Christopher Eccleston's list of demands re returning for The Day of the Doctor.
Didn't touch on the Fugitive Doctor (Jo Martin) either. Cheers....
@@friendlyotaku9525 Reality has proven otherwise.
7:15 McCoy and Janet Fielding had something in common, in that he and Fielding had been members of Ken Campbell's Roadshow, albeit not at the same time.
Yes I love these types of videos I find them so interesting
Me too.
The odd light background music had me thinking I was going crazy. Was checking background tabs, listening to my surrounding etc only to realize some ways into the video its PART of the video.
Oh, this was needed. Thank you.
For anyone interested Troughton's suggestions of dark skin and a turban, along with a few other things as I recall, stemmed from him being nervous that the whole regeneration thing would backfire, and wanting to be unrecognisable in the role so his face wouild not be assosiated with killing Doctor Who, I suspect there was an element of joking in said suggestions.
Or maybe we need to accept that people like Patrick Troughton may have had some views that aren't acceptable, and that we shouldn't make excuses for him.
The original name for the doctor was dr.who if you look at the credits of the first episode.
Don't go there! Long standing argument between fans. I think that the one lot goes something like it was a description rather than the name of the character. So "Dave the man buying newspaper in the background" rather than just "Dave" - yeah, as I said don't go there for the sake of your sanity!
Not just the first episode. The whole of the first 18 seasons of the classic era, and the first season of the revival.
Baker and Peter Davidson, 2 of my all time favorite Classic Doctors, glad they appeared back too back
I always knew the 8th doctor’s casting had a lot of candidates, but every time I hear about it, I learn about another big actor who was almost the Doctor
Remember: Matt Smith's Doctor is the ONLY incarnation to take on the Borg! (In an under rated graphic novel...)
I totally forgotten that Tom Baker was in the Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
It'd be interesting to hear similar accounts for John Hurt, Jo Martin, David Bradley, and the First Doctor actor from the Five Doctors whose name has completely escaped from my brain cells as I type! Hurdall?
Richard Hurndall
Interesting that Philip Hinchcliffe said 40 years ago that anyone playing the Doctor should be able to "go dark" and most on this list are able to do this and could have been the Master for example. Patrick Troughton did get to do an evil doppelganger in Enemy of the World.
Maybe another video could be ‘how each doctor was announced’
I was literally just watching a video about that. Classic era: press photo calls and newspaper articles, except for Davison who was announced and interviewed on a BBC TV news program.
McGann: nobody is really sure. Newspapers seem to have been the first to report it, but there's no evidence of a press release, so maybe it was leaked before they could announce it.
Eccleston and Tennant: online BBC news articles.
Smith: a special episode of the behind-the-scenes show.
Capaldi: big live show with people speculating and talking about the series until he was revealed.
Whittaker: a short reveal scene aired on TV during a break in the Wimbledon men's final.
Tennant again: there was a Twitter announcement that he would return for the 60th anniversary, but him being the "new" Doctor was left as a surprise for the actual regeneration scene (though this had been widely speculated based on what had been seen of filming).
Gatwa: on Twitter, after teasing the announcement with ♥♥➕🟦
Wendy Padbury was my first young teen crush. I watched in everything she did.
This channel rocks !!! Long live The Doctor !!!
This is interesting
I say Colin Baker was awesome as the villain Bayban in Blake,s Seven episode City at the Edge of the World and also as the 6th Doctor he was awesome for his short tenure onscreen but he has done many Big Finish stories on audio.
0:18 don’t bow down to the casual fans… his name IS doctor who!
When Tennant was interviewed about getting cast he said he took time to think about, Julie Gardner says ‘we had him at hello’. Apparently his initial reaction was if he took the job the doctor would need a big long coat. 😂
Seeing the clip of The Second Coming reminded me how good it was. I can’t stand Christopher Eccleston (nothing to do with Dr Who), but he’s incredible in that. Also it would be interesting to watch now and see if any of the cast haven’t been in Doctor Who yet.
I had also heard MiB bit actor Michael Jackson mentioned as a possibility for the Eighth.
thank you for the infos! I was wondering, though... with Doctor Who coming to Disney +, I understood that the previous seasons would be added to the platform when the new season will air. is it known weather or not it includes the classics? (or do I have a wrong understanding and only the brand new season will be aired on Disney +)
They’re not adding any previous season to Disney+ sadly, that’s part of the reason the new season is Season 1.
@@edwardrizer8505They are being unfair.
Australian Bribox Removed my Chance of watching Classic, and Pior to Disney's Time, is not on my Free Australian Streaming Service...
So I can never watch DW Normally Now, as an Australian who wants to more see from 1964-2022.
@@marionbagginsThen get the DVD/BD releases.
@@DrWhoFanJ They aren't letting Australians get it.
@@marionbaggins Incorrect. They’ve been available for over a decade.
I think I love Tom bakers the most. What a feeling that must’ve been for him being able to leave his tiring labouring job to be THE DOCTOR. What a guy.
I was absolutely desperate for Paterson Joseph to get the nod as 11, I adored him in Neverwhere.
Patterson Joseph would have been interesting.
The collective phrase is Doctors Who.
Ecclestone may be my favourite Doctor or at least would have been. Going by what he was like in a risky re-launch he would have been even better. I guess we will never know, Peter Capaldi is right up there too. Having said that pretty much all the actors really brought something. Whittaker is not to blame I think she would have been great with better writing.
Verrrry interesting! Ian Flemming knew who was it? Who
We could have seen phoebe waller bridge as the 13 th doctor. Iam never going to get over this information.
The only two actors I'd heard of before playing the Doctor are the Peters.
I'm just glad that we got Bernard Cribbins in an important role anyway. To think that he could've been the Fourth Doctor 👀 Would he have been as popular or more so popular than Tom Baker? I feel he may have, but I'm not too familiar with his work in the 70s.
The last two were box ticking exercises ✅✅✅
You what? Don't tell me you think Jodie Whittaker Ncuti Gatwa was chosen because of gender and race. No, they weren't.
That "other actors" comment. The other actor was Oli Alexander. I know someone on the production team and they had started work with it being him, then Ncuti walked in
I was sure if it would've been someone from It's a Sin it would be Lydia West. I'm not sure Olly Alexander has the range required for the Doctor.
I can't believe I'm an American asking about this, as the show in question never aired in the US, but I'm curious why you didn't mention John Pertwee being in the kids' show "Nigel Gummidge".
"Dr. Who never aired in the US"
Yes, it did.
It was Worzel Gummidge
@@daviderrington8224 A man with many heads.
@@Jabberstax As you'll notice, I wasn't talking about Dr. Who.
@@daviderrington8224 I guess this is one time when Google was wrong.
So the current RTD is RTD2?
2005-2010 is rtd1 and 2023 - who knows when since It's not ended yet is rtd2
All great actors that took on such a phenomenal character
I always wonder how Ellie will mention River Song in the video 😂
you should do the same kind of video but with companions instead
The thumbnail is making me laugh and idk why
Ejiofor would have made a magnificent Doctor. I hadn't heard he had been offered it.
david tennant is the pikachu of doctor who.
I think it was good that Bernard Cribbins wasn't cast as the Doctor because we probably wouldn't have Wilf
Hartnell there with Hugh Laurie from Dads Army...and in a Carry On film...
Troughton as in...Clash Of The Titans or is that Jason And The Argonauts?
Ah, Pertwee...He was really good. Possibly the BEST Doctor ever.
Tom Baker...would you like a Jelly Baby...? Second candidate for best ever.
Davison's Doctor always dressed weirdly...
Colin Baker's Doctor was VERY strange looking.
McCoy was very good. He made he character his own.
McGann, the missing link reinserted, leading to John Hurt...
Eccleston in the revamp was a VERY good idea...it kickstarted the newer Doctor Who.
Tennant was the best modern Doctor Who, everyone loved him.
Smith was bluddy good, and kept quite close to the Tennant-style cheerful Doctor.
Capaldi was very much like some of the older Doctors, but was a tad playful at times.
Whittaker is a great actress, but the series for her was really bad. Can't blame her though...
Not seen the new "black" Doctor yet. But can't wait for them to explain why The Doctor is now black...
They wont explain, cause we already know.
It's cause timelords can regenerate into any race or gender.
le falto mencionar al war doctor
Richard Griffiths would have been incredible
It's telling how many hoops Jodie Whittaker had to jump through, despite even a working relationship with the showrunner, compared to the other Doctors.
I would be a GREAT "Theta Sigma"...
How could you not include John Hurt?
They forgot john hurt 😢
Title is annoying but incredibly better for SEO
I guess John Hurt was never really cast as the War Doctor...he never even acted in the 50th. He was Bowfingered.
But really, I kind of wanted to hear his story.
And the war doctor?
Can we go one video without a marvel reference?!
John Nathan Turner
The 2nd Doctor was the blind guy harassed by the Harpies in "Jason and the Argonauts"? Very kewl... ;-)
The Fox TV-movie was a mess, so, of course, the casting had to be as well...
Wasn't Hugh Grant "The Doctor" for about half a sec for charity? I STILL want Rowan Atkinson as The Doctor... ;-P
I think that the less said about Chris Chibnall, the better... ;-P
RTD is full of sh!t, as always...
Speculation today is fine. In the 1990s it seemed like anyone who'd ever been on TV was under consideration. It's strange to think of how many members of the Monty Python team were rumoured. It says a lot about the public perception of the series that this was considered even vaguely plausible. Although we do know from Phil Segal that Michael Palin was approached. I can kind of see him doing like a manic version of 11, somehow. There should be another one of these on lost companions too.

The first two comments on this video both contain the word "interesting". How interesting.
Interesting
Interesting yes, very interesting indeed. Interesting.
the most interesting thing to ever spark an interest, quite interesting.
i think bill nighy could make a good doctor actually, would be nice to see that one day
David Tennat a phenomenal actor who was wishing to be the doctor since he was a kid.... says it all dont it, how many of the other doctors had that passion and love. maybe thats why he played it the best....
then we had "was always going to choose a female and hey i know this person" casting a female im ok with but would have been nice if it was because of all the candidates, male, female, black, white, gay or straight it was because that actor was the best! maybe then people would have been happier with the news? im sure if they said Julianne Moore, Sandra Bullock or Sigourney Weaver just quick examples were mentioned people would have been more excited for a renown good actor than a random woman that acted pretty badly in a show not many cared about.
and we know a dimilar decicion was made for Ncuti, good or bad, all those in the running for the part was of the same color and sexuality like that was all that mattered. again. Will smith, Wesley snipes, rupert everett, wentworth miller, laurence fishbourn, ian mckellen, ..... mix of gay and black (not both i dont think dunno) we would have been very hyped for instead of again.... a person nobody knows from a show not many saw because of his personal traits.
What about top 10 actors who turn down the role off the doctor
Hugh Grant!
The greatest Doctor Who ⏳that never was is 🥁.. Benedict Cumberbatch ❤🎉
Как же такое произошло из белого мужского доктора стало "нечто" черное, и необразованное.

Clive Droig?

Oh, and Fulton Mac-eye, not Mac-ay
everyone who understands the turn left reference at the end 👇
Oh dear as usual. You just mention the usa actors as not from the uk but show Liam Cunninghams photo whos Irish and not from th uk.
I think Richard O'Brien would have been a good Doctor.
John hurt?
WhoCulture of ALL channels calls The Doctor "Doctor Who" in a video title no less. I want to cry. For shame!!!
The character has actually been credited as “Doctor/Dr. Who” on many occasions.
But mainly… it makes for a neater title.
Benedict Cumberbatch would be a great Doctor.
Patrick Troughton was not the first choice. Just so you know.
I do hope we get another female Doctor soon, there are so many great actrecess that would be amazing at this role, they just need better writing than what Jodie got.
Jodie got robbed, no one liked Chibnells writing before he became show runner, it makes no sense why they gave him that job.
@@edwardrizer8505because Broadchurch was a legit good show, but that show was an entirely different beast to Doctor Who. You can’t just take the showrunner of a drama about a town dealing with all their secrets coming out after a child dies and expect them to do well with a light family sci-fi series
@@mrcritical6751 I’m talking about his writing on DoctorWho, his episodes were always low tier, and then they made him show runner, it makes no sense.
@@edwardrizer8505 again, it was likely because Broadchurch was such a big hit. Chibnall’s problem in my opinion was, he was a crime drama showrunner through and through, he wasn’t a sci-fi guy, it just wasn’t in his wheelhouse
No. Just no. The Doctor is a Male Time Lord. All this gender swapping is just anti-male nonsense. Jodie got the writing she deserved... shyte. End of.
Aneurin Barnard was also in line for The Doctor but was tipped by Matt Smith. Aneurin will be playing Jimmy White in a new film about his career.
I was rather hoping you'd include John Hurt and Jo Martin as well. I want more Doctor Ruth SO much...
Just not the other thing.
Christ, the amount of gammon in these comments.
Didn’t like 13, thought she was very poorly written - though I do think Whitaker’s performance was lacking at points too. Nothing to do with her being a woman. I’m sure we’ll get another soon.
Enjoyed what we’ve seen of 15 so far.
How was her performance lacking? She was consistently fantastic.
@@friendlyotaku9525 just an opinion. I never believed her as the Doctor. I could see the actor ‘acting’ - she was like an am-dram actress a lot to me. Didn’t have the gravitas or presence really, felt like she was forcing the flimsy ‘quirky’ material and the only moments I felt much was when she got a few darker moments - which is better suited to her as an actress. Her line delivery was pretty hit and miss - a lot of the time miss to me too.
Doesn’t help that the characterisation was terrible, mind. But it doesn’t really wash much with me bc Smith and Capaldi had some bad scripts but they never slacked to me.
The grumpy and gentle Hartnell
The clown-ish and comical Troughton
The tall and shocking Pertwee
The mischievous and sciency Tom
The heartthrob and humane Peter
The arrogant and proud Colin
The jokey and dark Sylvester
The sad and charming McGann
The lone and hardened Chris
The triumphant and dual Tennant
The quirky and speedy Matt
The kind and wise Capaldi
The bubbly and hopeful Jodie
And now, the emotional and open Ncuti
SPILL THAT TEA Who Culture, as you always do!!!
I hope I’ll get cast as the doctor too some day (I’m trying to become an actor just to play this character)
Good luck! Keep us posted on your career. I hope it is a huge success 😊
Good luck, hope to see you in the updated version of this video one day!
@@y_fam_goeglyd I hope so to. It’ll probably take a while before it’s even a reality because I’m still in high school, but I have only 1 year left there so when I’m done there I’m gonna start taking acting classes and begin my career.
Good luck!!!!
I’m pretty sure I know why/how the last Doctor got the job.
Love the ' turned left ' quote. ❤
I feel like RTD would have cast Olly Alexander as 15 if Nucti had never come along as they'd just worked together in It's A Sin like with Eccleston and Tennant and I feel Olly Alexander could have played the 15th Doctor very well.
Interestingly, Sting as the Doctor might not be the strangest not castings as I've read that Mr Pastry! was close to land the role of the 4th Doctor!!
Very true. He apparently told Barry Letts he'd only do it if they let him play the Doctor in character as Mr. Pastry, hence why they politiely declined.
A parallel universe where Tilda Swinton was the Doctor... I want to live there
Reverse the polarity of the newtron flow
I'd really like to see Joe gilgun or micheala coel as the doctor. I was nervous about ncuti at first due to sex education being the only time I'd seen him before but the Christmas special he was great and! The new trailer looks phenomenal.
Well if STing had gotten the role they could have named the companion Roxanne.
Never came to pass was cruel
hugh laurie as doctor who
Doctor house 😂
GOOD OMENS MENTIONED ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
u said the characters name is the doctor not doctor who - this is an ongoing debate among hardcore fans
in the classic series, three stories refer to the character as doctor who
wotan in the war machines says "doctor who is required"
in the highlanders the doctor introduces himself in German that translates to doctor who
and in the underwater menace he signs a note "Dr w" (altho this was changed in the animation)
more famous there's the scene in series 10 episode 11 "world enough and time" where missy refers to the doctor as "doctor who" and alludes to him previously going by that name and ofcourse during the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th&9th doctors eras they were credited as "doctor who"
I'm not saying "the doctor" isn't an acceptable name, but "doctor who" is too and its not as clear cut as some people think.
In the Big Finish 5th Doctor audio play The Kingmaker, the Doctor is confronted by a publishing droid who demands to know where the promised manuscripts are for their book deal with "Doctor who," and 5 has to explain to his companions that the deal was for a series of books for children, and the theme was to be, 'the Doctor who did this' or 'the Doctor who did that.' Its been years now, but I think he told Tegan and Nyssa that he never finished writing any of them like he meant to.
