I see this with both dogs & horses. People are conditioned to think that "I'll just give them unconditional love, and everything will be wonderful!" No, it won't. Animals need leadership *first*, then a relationship of some sort. In many ways, the more professional the relationship the better, at least at first.

I call it black stallion syndrome with horses and lassie syndrome with dogs. My animal and I share mutual love so they won't hurt me....we have a connection.

You are absolutely correct! Animals that live in a collective unit, whether it be a herd or a pack, have a place within those communities. They have leaders and followers, they all have a job to do. People don’t understand this and think it’s cruel when someone tries to insert themselves as the head of this so-called community. However, Once leader ship is established, of course, with love and understanding as Stephen does. The animals have an amazing change of heart, and become something so wonderful, and so different than what they were. Without leader ship, the animal will step in and take that leader ship role, whether for good or for bad.

With kids too! That’s why we are seeing entitled kids getting very aggressive and violent. In the absence of guidance with consequences. A lot of latch key kids cause parents have to work two jobs! Kids are lost!

Sharon seems like the loveliest person with a wonderful laugh! Unfortunately in relationships, people & critters will take advantage of that sweetness (trust me, I know.). It's no one's fault. It's just the way it is. If you understand this dynamic, it can be changed enough that everyone is happy. Thanks Sharon for holding a mirror up to those of us like you, and doing it with such good humor!

Ok, whether it was Gracie or Darcie, she was a lovely pony and Sharon’s laughter at her pony not doing anything, was infectious. She was quick at picking up the signals though and did well on the lunge.
Wow, I had forgotten how tall Precious was. Definitely grown. She soon became quite light, in spite of her size.
That little Dotty was the cutest but so naughty at nibbling!!! Another one needing work.
    Well done Steve

I had a silly quarter horse when I was about 10-12 years old. I spent most of my time, if not riding him, just hanging around in the field with him. I always wore flip flops while in the field and his favorite thing to do was step in the sides of my flip flops to “trap” me until I gave him a treat. He did it all the time and never once hurt me. He was a real prankster!

Me to,,,been 15 or 16 years since I've been on a horse,,,but watching Steve has got me itching to get on a horse again,,,I'm 74 and my sons think I'm crazy and said why not try driving BUT my heart wants my legs across a horse again,,,so that's on my bucket list,,,enquired about prices at local riding school but they charge 40.00 for half hour shared lesson, which as a pensioner is out of my price range,,but it's on the bucket list,,,and if l have a little win on the lottery l buy one,,,fingers crossed ,,,❤

@@moyagreaves8092I'm hoping you can find some horsey friends that will have you out to ride with them. I'm in the states and would love to have someone to help me get my horses ridden.
As for age and riding, doing the things we love keeps us going. When I was a teenager (I'm 57 now) there was a lady that foxhunted with us twice a week in any weather. She was 82 and still rode sidesaddle. She rode up front and Jumped everything. Amazing person ❤

It's fun to watch when the owners have a good sense of humor and they really want to learn to do the right thing. Sharon is a doll; what's a lovely person.
And you can see the love that she has for her beautiful Precious and Darcy.
Thanks Steve and Tanya I really enjoyed this video. And I learned a whole lot from watching the rein work that you were doing with Precious.
I could see the place where Darcy realized that it felt better for her to have a leader, and not just have it her way, and then she settled in.
    That was brilliant.
God bless you all and keep you safe.

Here in Canada we have some beautiful rugged wilderness which generates some amazing videos so I was watching one of those search and rescue UA-cam videos from BC training Volunteers on water safety, how to rescue from fast running rivers and they said for a little child the depth of 4 inch of fast running water is strong enough to sweep them away. Kids will be kids and curiosity is their middle name and not at all enough to say “no” goes in one ear and out the other in the presence of curiosity…. God bless our kids!

One rein stop works perfectly on a horse that has been trained to use a one rein stop. But if not there is only one safe way to end a run away gallop. At a gallop, as they lunge forward, grab the reins and pull back as they do. When the neck is fully back immediately plant BOTH reins on the pommel and put all your weight on them. Once anchored there, the next impulse or neck extension becomes impossible for the horse. The stride is broken and the horse will decide it's not able to proceed apace. Works every time, on any horse. Or just jump. Knowing how to fly helps.

Love what you do Steve and Tanya, its fun to watch your travels together as well as the horse training. I have been a dog trainer for over 25 years and own A Promised Friend LLC near Toledo Ohio, USA. I also now have a you tube channel @ APromisedFriend. I have had horses for 40 years and followed natural horsemanship for the past 16 years. I love your Leading/Driving method and have used it with my older horses. However, we just got a wild Chincoteague colt 2 weeks ago today. He is just 5 months old. I have never had a horse younger than 3 yrs old. before. I am wondering if groundwork should be different at this age. he came to us very shy, but in the last 2 weeks has become way more outgoing and mouthing everything! No pinned ears but a bit of an attitude none the less. I am making sure I move his feet and he responds well, but I don't want to knock the curiosity out of him. Any advice?

When horses are taken away from their mothers too early and fed by people by hand with no stern mare correction they learn to be pushy. See it all the time in the US auctions. Kill pens sell off mustangs (wild horses) because it takes a lot to gentle them if they have foals they are taken away to sell at higher price. It’s tough to work with those foals.

1355 the horse is looking at you when you back up like calling the horse to you. You want the horse to come to you when you back up so your accidentally giving the horse the queue or intentionally giving the cue to present the issue. Either way in that send off. You are looking a bit like the predator with intent of being behind its shoulder. To step it forward, you can raise your hand on the side of its head and bouncing the air signifying stay away from that coming into you problem

    ☆Most of us aren't drinking enough water... 😉 💧
Probably due to the cold weather now! brrrr 🥶
I have added Calcium/Magnesium & Potassium supplements as per doctor's orders, too, due to a medicine that depletes these elements.

The mounting block… where do you get those or did they have to build it? We have built a big platform but want to build or get something better for our draft
