How have you found it in terms of reliability? I went with the Africa Twin over the KTM because I was worried about reliability on tour, heard quite a few horror stories about other KTMs.
@@Ze-Germanzuk My ktm 1090 had warped brake discs with only 10.000kms on it. I have extra 2 years of factory guarantee, but ktm says brake discs are not covered. I have the gen 2, at almost 10k miles, it feels much smoother on low speeds, also, 60mph on 6th gear is smoother, I believe that the engine is run in nicely now. People judge motorcycles unfairly when they have not been run in, especially with large cc engines, especially a v twin as they will take some time to bed in. I agree, its a hooligan bike and I love it. Torque galore, good mpg, nice riding position. Amazing.
10k mile full break in lol It is true though that the larger the engine the more robust all the pieces do become quite difficult for mere mortals to wear out anytime soon (except by lack of maintence type abuse) I remember my 2 stroke big bores would go forever with hardly any wear to piston and rings as opposed to small bores you could wear out pretty fast ...ust for one example
The only "bedding" happening is piston rings mating with cylinder walls, and transmission gears pressing against mating gears. You better hope nothing else is wearing in that engine. About 1200 miles is max for any additional sealing of piston rings. It's all done by then. The most that happens is the first 25 miles. The big sports Vtwins engines need more revs to smooth out, just a fact of physics and science. You shouldn't be running 6th gear until about 75-80 mph because it's geared so tall.
I raced KTM's ( MX) in the 70's. Took me to a #1 spot here in the U.S. AMA district 18. Just bought an RC390. Best handling bike i ever had! Would love a new 1390 Super Duke but think its a bit tall for me! You can buy a $150 K sports car or a $20K Super Duke if you want to go FASTER! My 390 does 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds and is the most fun you can have under 100 mph! Corners like it's on rails and cost $5500! (2023)
Great review - Really captures the essence of this awesome machine I traded a Gen III SD-R in for the Gen II SD-GT and the GT is just streets ahead on so many levels - While the SD-R III is a great ride, the GT makes it seem like a bit of a one trick pony by comparison - Main advantages: Great adjustable screen, amazing electronic suspension (preload and damping), 23l tank versus only 16l, real luggage capacity, proper pillion set-up, excellent heated grips and perhaps best it has a huge info screen that can be fully customised to read out everything you need continuously - Remarkable how different they are really - Pay the extra and get the GT for sure

I've had mine off the road since late august as for the first time, I am no longer an all season rider. I've put it into a shop to get all buttery smooth for the coming summer. NGL, I am buzzing and watching video's I've watched multiple times before.

The look is unigue, nothing extra - excellent. The heated grips and seat are insane hot! My 2017 has anti-dive...I'm pretty sure the newer stuff has it to. No?
Nice review Chopsy! Apart from the GT looking like an orange toad from the front it's an awesome bike. Fortunately the 1290 R and (Evo with the bluey bits) is a more handsome pup and offers KTM magic as well. I could tour with it as well. And easy on the eye all day.
The chugging under 4k rpm is typical of KTM's. Have been on a 990smt and 2023 duke evo, same story. Despite being twins the torque down low isn't what you'd expect, my old inline 4 Japanese bike loafs around at 2k rpm without complaint.
Adore the GT, my favourite bike series, but not basing it on the Gen3 SD was an odd decision and a big mistake IMO. Really don't want the GT to now always be a gen behind the SD.
Great video review. The only thing that puts me off is that front end look. I'm looking for a bike to take the misses on but also dislike the look of adventure bikes. Think I'll just go gen3 SDR
Just bought a 2020 model. You are right from the front it's as ugly as a baboon's arse but I can't see that whilst I'm sat on it. But that engine... I now have to decide which bike to get on, the KTM or my RSV4, poor me!
Would i swap my 2019 model for a newer version🤔 - No! I would however, recommend the bike to anyone as its great fun, fast and so far very reliable, unlike a bike i once owned from Bologna (still want one though)
I am watching this with two opposing feelings. It is consoling me but I am also so jealous as my H2 SX SE purchase has just fallen though. The finance company gave me a quote then on the final confirmation raised the monthly payments significantly. I will just have to ride vicariously through you and the others LOL
I'm pretty happy with my '22 GT, but have replaced the rear 38T sprocket for a 40T. It raises the revs by about 250, and just gets the whole bike spinning a little easier. Still a bit undecided on the Conti RA4's, cant make my mind up whether I like them or not (having come from Metzler's).
@@drewyager4020 Bike is '22 - so it comes with Conti's. Never used the Angel GT's. I loved the Metzler Roadtech 01's so would be keen to try the sportec M9RR's ....
@@LambGiles I had the Metzler Z8 on my 2020 R1250RS and they were nice. I find the RA to be far better in all conditions. My ‘17 SDGT came with the Angel GT and they were terrible. Unfortunately my SDGT had fueling problems and starter problems so I had to get rid of it. Been chasing that bikes performance with no luck. I’m happy when I hear of owners not having any problems. If you are so lucky never get rid of that bike. Chopsy will tell you. It’s simply in a league of its own
Sweet video great bike hoping to pick mine up tomorrow. I watch a ton of bike reviews based in England. Why are all the roads so dang narrow with no shoulder? It's always like they let the brush grow right up to the edge of the pavement. That would give me anxiety.
I feel the indicator switch is difficult to get right, std seat is very firm, and am having random fueling issues with power dropping completely for split second, hopefully will be sorted at first service
The chuggy feeling in a high gear is solvable.....just downshift, problem solved..... I think front end looks fine, whole bike looks good...KTM headlight is kinda weird anyway but I got used it on mine
I have the 2018 model and the only way I would change for a newer one is if they ported the current superduke frame to it to make it sportier. (like on the 2023 stolen shots) Or if it was somehow possible to get panniers on the current superduke.
Naughty chops lol overtaking when there are driveways on the timestamp of 4:50 lol I remember the police training from your video about it and the policeman saying that’s a no no 😂
What road is that little hill climb bit you love ? I’m not too far from you but no idea where that is - quite fancy it myself on my duke EVO some time 👍
Have a 2019 GT now. Also have a Ducati Pikes Peak ordered. But that PP delivery keeps getting put off. I am also watching for evidence of a V.3 GT. If the PP is dragged out any longer--I may wait to see a confirmed V.3. We ride 2-up 90% but I want to take the bags off and rip a bit after riding wifey around at sane speeds. It's down to these two. I DO think my present V.2 suspension is jouncy and I can't find the setting that lets both ends of the bike feel like they are working together. Maybe rear shock needs some sort of service. 8000 miles ain't much though.
A cracking bike but personally I'd like a 1290 SA R and a superduke in the garage even though this bike is an attempting combination of both of the above 🙄 now I've confused myself, I think
Anti-dive exists but only with comfort and street settings - not on sport. At least my 2017 is this way which is why prefer either of the two .... rarely ride sport. Nice honest review. What is that speed/acceleration app called @ about 22 minutes?
Cracking nuts and bolts review as always👏Slightly off subject, but just wondered on the odd occasion you ride without the various cameras, battery rucksack and paraphernalia tercentenary, does it feel weird, like something is missing? I suppose in just becomes second nature having done it enough times😂😂😂
slight correction: the GT isn't the 1st bike in the ktm range to have electronic suspension. That honor belongs to the euro-only 2013 1190 adv S. Perhaps you meant 1st 1290 Super Duke varient to get electronic suspension?
I had a 2010 990 SDuke a few years ago and I didn't like it very much and have been put off KTM ever since. What can you tell me to encourage me to test ride the latest crop?
Hy, What is your comparison between SD GT, Multi v4s and XR? Are they the real sports tourers for middle aged, big, over 18 stone bearded bikers? (on my commute, with panniers, papers, laptop, lunch and stuff, i have my XR's electronic suspension set on two-up 😈)
Have you seen the spyshots of the new 990 Duke? I hope you will test it when it will be released, Im really interested in the comparison with 890 Duke R!! I was considering buying the 890 R but the 990 might handle better so I will probably wait for it
Gotta say, the KTM range is slowly growing on me… However, I’ve heard that a lot of the new stuff have all sorts of reliability issues, mainly electronics wise! Still think that you can’t beat the Japanese stuff, I’ll be sticking with the H2SXSE😉👍🏽
I love my H2 SX SE. I managed to hole the radiator while touring Scotland (as did the SD1290GT with me!) but other than that, just servicing and the two recalls. It's flashed to almost 220bhp yetis totally useable and friendly. 😍
@@blackk1UK Yea, cracking bike, mines been flashed at Jordon M/C’s, 228 at the rear. As you say, perfectly useable. I’ve been all over Spain two up and it’s superb. Bloody fast, comfy, good on fuel all things considered and ultra reliable! Kawasaki Wizardry👌🏽👍🏽
I think damage from sharp rocks a small tip overs and such shouldn't count against a bikes reliability. But anything going bad during normal riding while well serviced.....that is not good. :D
About to trade in an 18 Multi Pikes Peak, heading up to Abingdon premier bikes to test a SAS and SDGT in the next couple of weeks, torn between the two bikes, but need to see how much discount they would do on a 22 GT vs instead going for an older 19, or waiting for gen 3 out early next year 🤔, only concern is the early issues/kinks the gen 3 might have to start with.
I love your perspective on reviews. I am considering adding this or the 22’ H2 SX SE+ you reviewed. I rarely take beyond a long day trip. I live next to world class mountain twisties I day ride. It seems this would be more nimble than the Kawasaki in the mountains. But the Kawi much better for long-slog touring right? What are your thoughts?
@@SP-xd8gs Still enjoying my 2021 ATAS ES DCT. I freaking love my bike for the beat up mountain roads and twisties. I am looking at the 2024 M1000XR. But honestly, BMW needs to put Apple CarPlay in their bikes. No one other than Indian and Honda have it. I am waiting for BMW to make the right choice. For now, loving my solo riding with my favorite tunes via Apple CarPlay
I ride mine in 30c+ in Japan and with shorts on this thing can literally burn your right leg with the heat from the fans. Jeans protect but the overall heat on the leg and in the crotch make it pretty much unrideable in semi-tropical heat. My Evo, no such issues. Also my Evo doesn't make my right hand go numb (way smoother motor). I have looked into swapping it, for a Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX, but in the nick of time discovered a video saying that one cooks ass and ankles in 30c heat.
Chopsy, watched a few times, really good reviews. This is my favourite contender for my next bike. Please can I ask, what's your own experience with KTM reliability and their service like, on the latter models? I love the idea of this as one bike to do it all . Slightly apprehensive about KTM reputation. (Also trying to discover handlebar width to see if it fits down side of gaf). Suppose I'll have to go and see one. 😊
Amazing. I'm pretty convinced it's going to be my next bike. As long as it fits down the side of the gaf! Really appreciate you taking time to respond. P s the xsr900 is a beauty and there is actually a Kenny Roberts replica one for sale on eBay. It's genuinely, beautiful.
No I'm not challenged by the praying mantis look of the front end. Just emphasises how different and unusual this bike is. Thanks for that, it's obvious how terribly much you suffered making this video.

I love your videos and reviews Keep up the great content, can you do a video on how you wash your bike and what products you use thank you!!!
Really tempted by a gen 2 model… prices are starting to drop a bit on them now!
Exactly. Such a weird decision. Literally the only reason that would prevent me from buying the GT..
I spoke to them at the bike show. This is a filler as the Gen3 was delayed due to covid.
@@scottyuk ahhh. So gen 5 next time?!
Gen3 you mean. Will have to ponder the cost difference but it should be a cracker 👍
@@scottyuk 5. DG will be gen 5 in 2023 so if the SD GT is going to catch up it will need to skip SD gen 4.
Those fairings make it look like an orange lobster from the front. Great video as always
Loved that John, thank you!
Bet that's brilliant bit more drive 👍
You want the Anget GT’s back on?? No way. The contis are incredible. Also the Bridgestone S22’s work well on the SDGT
@@LambChopRides Yeah ... a good upgrade i'd recumbent to anybody. 👍
KTM is testing an all new 1290 GT and a new face lifted Super Duke as well..🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
I feel the indicator switch is difficult to get right, std seat is very firm, and am having random fueling issues with power dropping completely for split second, hopefully will be sorted at first service
SAME! power dropping for a split second. What is that? did you sort it out????? I ve been having this forever!
1 of my mates bought 1 and has had nothing but problems with it, he has now traded it for a Multistrada V4S
Noun: Hoooooooligan!!!
Verb: To Hoon
Past tense. OMG, I was HOONED by SDGT!
The chuggy feeling in a high gear is solvable.....just downshift, problem solved.....
I think front end looks fine, whole bike looks good...KTM headlight is kinda weird anyway but I got used it on mine
LCR your a legend .
I have the 2018 model and the only way I would change for a newer one is if they ported the current superduke frame to it to make it sportier. (like on the 2023 stolen shots)
Or if it was somehow possible to get panniers on the current superduke.
WOW, that machine looks Awesome, luv it.
Gonna wait for the new version.
What's the 2024 GT like riding at 60 mph all day? Does it lug and chug in 5th gear?
Naughty chops lol overtaking when there are driveways on the timestamp of 4:50 lol I remember the police training from your video about it and the policeman saying that’s a no no 😂
The B2141 is a fantastic road isn't it?😬 Great vid chopsy👍
Cmon cmon chops ,waiting impatiently for the evo review 👍
Very shocked to see no comparison with the Gen 1 BMW S1000XR, mine got written off and now I'm looking at getting one of these or another XR
Time to advertise a kidney 😄
I am a KTM fan boy , great review as always 👍
I do like this bike 🙂
The switched to continental tires? They must have heard about my experience with Contis. Love them
Anti-dive exists but only with comfort and street settings - not on sport.
Hi Chops , just sold my RS1200 speed triple and deciding between Super Duke GT and Multistrada v4s and Gs . What are your thoughts mate ?
I love this Bike! it has incredible toruqe.
why not BMW s1000xr? or ducati v4?
Had a gen1, now a gen 2, waiting (praying) for a gen 3
I wish they would just make the GT the same as the R but with the bigger tank and panniers
Great review. 🎉
So you are using the thumb straps on your Knox. First thing I did when I got it was cutting them off, lol.
I had a 2010 990 SDuke a few years ago and I didn't like it very much and have been put off KTM ever since. What can you tell me to encourage me to test ride the latest crop?
The 1290 engine is so different, so much smoother, more power and all the electronics you will ever need.
The paint on the engine is a ceramic based coating...
I think the ZZR beats it hands down in every aspect 0-60, 1/4 mile, top speed
Except for being a hooligan
Great video 👍
Chopsy I hope you get to borrow the 1390 GT with all the bells and whistles to review.
Yeah certainly will!! Hopefully I might get a launch invite 🙏
@ let’s hope fingers crossed.
More than anything else, this bike makes me wish I was better equipped financially
Would be interesting to see an 890gt? But, I’ve said it before, an 890 super moto
Yes me too 👍
How would this be for a pillion on back? Worth going to ride with the wife? Is 10k less than Multistrada or new gs1300
KTM needs to add a center stand for this bike.
I have one and on top of the list of things it doesn't need is a centre stand. A proper comfy seat is all its really lacking.
Hy,
What is your comparison between SD GT, Multi v4s and XR?
Are they the real sports tourers for middle aged, big, over 18 stone bearded bikers?
(on my commute, with panniers, papers, laptop, lunch and stuff, i have my XR's electronic suspension set on two-up 😈)
Get the multi v4s Peter….you won’t need anything else✊
SDGT has better performance.
Excellent review, Thank you !!! I hope KTM sends the GT to the US, I will be trading my 2020 1290 SAS !,,
It’s available in the US now
Have you seen the spyshots of the new 990 Duke? I hope you will test it when it will be released, Im really interested in the comparison with 890 Duke R!! I was considering buying the 890 R but the 990 might handle better so I will probably wait for it
Gotta say, the KTM range is slowly growing on me… However, I’ve heard that a lot of the new stuff have all sorts of reliability issues, mainly electronics wise!
Still think that you can’t beat the Japanese stuff, I’ll be sticking with the H2SXSE😉👍🏽
As an H2 SX SE owner who's ridden the SD1290GT - I agree! 😁
@@blackk1UK I’ve had no issues with my H2 have you?
Couple of recalls, but otherwise she’s been superb👌🏽👍🏽
GLOVES GLOVES GLOVES....The dial type gloves are really cool, what brand are they mate ?
They are knox Handroid Pods 👍 link in the description
I love your perspective on reviews. I am considering adding this or the 22’ H2 SX SE+ you reviewed. I rarely take beyond a long day trip. I live next to world class mountain twisties I day ride. It seems this would be more nimble than the Kawasaki in the mountains. But the Kawi much better for long-slog touring right? What are your thoughts?
I'm in your same position, man.
what did you do
@@SP-xd8gs Still enjoying my 2021 ATAS ES DCT. I freaking love my bike for the beat up mountain roads and twisties. I am looking at the 2024 M1000XR. But honestly, BMW needs to put Apple CarPlay in their bikes. No one other than Indian and Honda have it. I am waiting for BMW to make the right choice. For now, loving my solo riding with my favorite tunes via Apple CarPlay
that c2 shortcut switch is gonna get snapped in about five minutes
11:17 It's a V-twin engine at 75⁰ , not at 90⁰
I've had 3 including the current SMCR and I've had zero issues. I'm sure some people have issues but I've not experienced any 👍
Amazing. I'm pretty convinced it's going to be my next bike. As long as it fits down the side of the gaf! Really appreciate you taking time to respond. P s the xsr900 is a beauty and there is actually a Kenny Roberts replica one for sale on eBay. It's genuinely, beautiful.
I don't understand why KTM doesn't offer a center stand on this GT bike with a chain???@@LambChopRides
No I'm not challenged by the praying mantis look of the front end. Just emphasises how different and unusual this bike is. Thanks for that, it's obvious how terribly much you suffered making this video.
I didn’t get on with it, much prefer the Tuono even if you need more fuel stops.
