Under a community post, a commenter pointed out that the verse focuses too much on the guilt and regret of the believer, and not on the harm they would've caused to their victim. I think that's a brilliant point but I had already recorded the video before I saw that comment!
It may be because the author puts more weight on the believer's feelings, or it may be because he is used to preaching using guilt. It's impossible to know.

I love how you deconstruct verses like this. As Muslims, we approached the Qur'an with reverence and read it as an act of devotion. If we did ask questions, it was only to seek justifications to confirm our biases. It is almost impossible for a believer to step outside that mindset. But when one is able to do that, one cannot fail to see how flawed and imperfect the Qur'an really is. Inextricably tied to its time, context and fallible human author.

In the Quran , It is essential to differentiate between the earlier "Medina verses " ( when Mohammed was aspiring to get acceptance for his new religion ) and the latter "Makkah verses" ( when Mohammed had already consolidated his, absolute authority) . The "Medina verses ", therefore, are more conciliatory and tolerant towards " disbelievers " and the ",Makkah verses " absolutely intolerant and aggressive. It is the earlier " Medina verses " that Islamic, apologists often quote as " evidence " of Islam's," peaceful " and "tolerant " nature .

There are over 300 references in the Koran to Allah and fear, there are only 49 references to love. Of these love references, 39 are negative such as the 14 negative references to love of money, power, other gods and status.
Three verses command humanity to love Allah and only 2 verses are about how Allah loves a believer. There are 25 verses about how Allah does not love kafirs (unbelievers; the worst of all creature). This leaves only 5 verses about love in the entire book. Of these 5, 3 are about loving kin or a ‘Muslim brother’ (ignored on a daily basis). One verse commands a Muslim to give for the love of Allah. This leaves only one quasi-universal verse about love: give what you love to charity and even this is contaminated by dualism since the requisite Muslim charity only goes to other Muslims. So, love your fellow man = NONE!
Nearly 500 verses (one out of every twelve) in the entire Qur'an speak of hell and over 400 speak negatively and encourage hatred or dislike of Jews, Christians, Idolaters and non muslims in general. One line in every five lines in the Quran is incomprehensible, even to Islamic scholars! What a god, what a prophet, what a book!

The advice in the Qur'an is indeed a gem of wisdom - verify your sources for truth. That obviously includes the moral character and capacity of the person conveying the information. That's good advice for anybody anywhere and a safeguard against bad judgement of a situation. Sensible people do this everyday! The fact that you question this shows your own bias and desperate need for self-justification.

    • @hoz1711_
      @hoz1711_ 2 місяці тому +4

If the point of the verse was "verify all sources for truth" then the Quran could have simply said those exact words - it doesn't. It wouldn't contain the word Fasiq. Alladin also clearly explains that this verse doesn't talk about verifying information from sources that you trust implicitly and it's a reach to say that it does. It does not "obviously" mean too assess the moral character and capacity, because the verse defines the moral character for us, ie wicked or disobedient. Further, Alladin isn't questioning the wisdom of verifying your sources for truth, he is questioning how the message is conveyed in the Quran, so you are just using a straw man. The ultimate point of the video is to show how the Quran could be improved. It could be improved by simply stating 'when any person comes to you with information, verify it to avoid harm', but again, it doesn't. This is a common theme among all religious scriptures.

Good advice does not necessarily equal complete advice. The verse provides partially good advice, at best.

A perfect guidebook (ethics from god; objective morality) presupposes a perfect understanding (god). How does a perfect idea be translated into language and interpreted by human minds? There are so many people, with many perspectives, and complex changes in culture over time, how can these complex subjective experiences be united by the perfect idea? God’s perfect idea for imperfect humans. This ideology is circular in logic (why is the idea perfect? Because it comes from the perfect god who creates perfect ideas). How do we define and measure imperfection and perfection, and to what degree are humans able to comprehend god? Is perfection a human construct? A claim of perfection is paralyzing or stagnating. To prove perfection we need to comprehend perfection (how to prove something unknown?). So, how to live without a perfect guide? Use the imperfect knowable guide that is our current understanding of things.

I’d argue that, from the islamic perspective, your improvement upon the verse might not apply.
First of all, let’s suppose the news/نبأ being referenced was that of disobediance to Allah, which, from the islamic perspective, is incorrect and reprehensible.
The point of this verse could be “when there is a possibility of someone being disobedient, make sure first that the disobedience occurred.”
Most people, however, have difficulty ascertaining whether or not a situation is certain, and jump to certainty and blame prematurely. The use of the word فاسق then could more closely mirror the person’s conception of the situation and help the verse come to mind more immediately, giving it greater applicability.

Aladdin, you're missing (or forgetting) some essentials about the Quran. Consider the audience of the Quran, and if you're not sure who it is, reread the first and second chapter, especially the first one, really carefully. As a hint, who are the "maghdoobi 3alayhim," and what is their relationship with the "fasiqeen"? Also consider the audience of this verse, those who are already believers.
To a believer, it is a clear that a fasiq is a nonbeliever, and furthermore, one who is known to be a causer of harm. When in times of tension and anxiety and uncertainty (as the Muslims were in Medina), it is typical (from an emotional standpoint) to be more receptive to information which promotes distrust of another people. By mentioning the word fasiq, the verse reminds the believers who these people who create distrust really are-disbelieving people who do not operate by the same standards expected of a believer, so extra scrutiny is necessary. This may seem obvious, but many ideas in isolation may seem obvious, whereas the collection of a consistent set of these "obvious" ideas (Quran as a whole) is much less trivial.
Additionally, the Quran is a book in which every grammatically viable interpretation of any one verse is sound and accepted. An alternative understanding is that the "qawm" are a people which are with the disbelievers, so Allah swt asks the Muslims to be careful of hurting even the disbelievers if the source very well may be hearsay-yes not all wars/attacks taken were defensive, but the understanding is that offensive wars are to be avoided except for sound reasoning.
In your comment, you mention that the emphasis of the verse is to alleviate guilt from the believer rather than harm to others. Of course, the goal of a Muslim is to attain heaven, and this is something each Muslim is individually accountable for. It may sound harsh, but in a way, doing any favor for others is doing a favor for yourself-the ultimate goal is inherently selfish. Even if helping another just makes you happy or content, that's still a positive feeling that you seek for yourself. So at the end of the day, yes, the implications of your actions to yourself are what is most important, there is no mistake there.

    • @kyoungd

*One who is known to be a causer of harm.*
I am curious. Who are they, these known to be a causer of harm? For example, suicide bombers do not consider themselves to be evil. They believe that the Qur'an is the literal word of God, and prophet Muhammad is the last prophet. In my opinion, Islam (much like other religion) teaches some (not all) terrible morals. These vague words like "wicked" or "know to be causer of harm" are used to justify horrible morality. Are Apostates "causer of harm?" What about gays? What about slave owners?
What qualifies someone as a causer of harm?

Allah seems to be able to deliver miracles at the drop of hat but in the critical matter of his eternal book why did he refrain from sending his perfect book complete - written on exquisite parchment and made by a pen dipped in liquid gold , gradually descending to earth in a blaze of glory to an expectant multitude? Instead we have an incredibly flawed and confusing process - bits written on palm leaves and bones, sections memorized and with many variants and parts lost and we have to have a murderous autocrat in the person of caliph Uthman to create a final recension and then all the evidence of past variants burnt? I'm well aware that the Koran itself tries to answer this objection but it would try to do that wouldn't it?

She was certainly in it, but in Islam she had to wear so much thick clothing that no one would recognize her anymore as a woman and people mistook her for a jinn.
That's also why the quran talks so much nonsense about jinns.

During an interview with Angelika Neuwirth, the distinguished Professor of Qur’anic studies, she argued that the Qur’an has never been successfully challenged by anyone, past or present:
"No one has succeeded, this is right… I really think that the Qur’an has even brought Western researchers embarrassment, who were not able to clarify how suddenly in an environment where there were not any appreciable written text, appeared the Qur’an with its richness of ideas and its magnificent wordings."
