- From Calendar on 31/3/16, YTV weatherman Jon Mitchell visits Emley Moor to see up-close the structure that has provided viewers in Yorkshire with their tv pictures for the last 45 years.
Jon retired on Friday 29th July 2022 after 33 years on the telly!
The original geared mechanical lift inside the tower was very slow and ‘graunched’ its way up inside the hollow tower. I never looked down as we went up...because the expanded metal flooring in the lift could make you feel you were floating on air with nothing supporting you. Quite an experience! Ian Lamb(the IBA Manager in the 1980s) was kind enough to let us go up a number of times and once (on a very foggy day) we felt like we were on a lighthouse at sea as were were well above the clouds . An Inbound 747 jet for Manchester airport flew by ...and it seemed like it was only a mile or so from us...but it was much further away than that) looked very close. Emley Moor tower is beautiful and I’ll never forget how kind the IBA station staff were to us when their colleagues from the southern HQ visited. Thanks for the memories. Rob.
Emley Moor Mast, Yorkshire's gigantic one-finger salute to the south!
Make that two with Belmont
True
what have i done? i love the emley moor
More like trying to over compensate for something lacking.
I got to go up there in 1998 while working at the site for NTL. They gave us a tour on our last day, got a certificate too. :-)
Thank you so much for uploading this to UA-cam I love the view of Emley Moor television mast near Huddersfield and you get a really good view it is amazing!
Being from Bradford we also receive our programmes from the Emley Moor TV region.
Stand at the bottom and gaze upwards.
An awesome jaw dropping site to behold for sure!
Nothing short of amazing.
I've heard of people as far away as Germany who could pick up TV signals from Emley moor TV mast, when the conditions were right.
Few other structures as grand a sight in the UK.
Great stuff. Thanks to all of you who posted these videos...
I went up the mast about a week before it came crashing down! Since then Ive been up very many masts in Europe in particular in the Netherlands for the Dutch PTT and the NOZEMA!
It came down the day I was born (down south), now live very near. Have not been for a while but there used to be till recently still signs stating 'warning falling ice', I guess from the old guy cabled even taller tower of the 60's. The day of the Queen's funeral it was lit purple, quite moving to see.
love Emley moor i go to a nearby timber firm,im from preston lancashire and an hgv driver, also a great landmark to see from the motorway it means your not to far from home :)
Great thing to have on the news👍👍👍
50 years today for Emley Moor!
Amazing to see it for real.
This tower is a very nice structure.
Highest free standing structure in the UK
On a clear day I can see Emley Moor transmitter all the way from Hameldon Hill Burnley

On a clear it’s said it can be seen from as far as Darlington. The mast is situated on a moor that is 1500ft above sea level. EMM is the 25th tallest structure in the world. It’s taller than the Eiffel Tower, and the Shard in London.
I saw that on the way to Manchester
Pity about the cloudy weather because the views on clear days must be immense!
There is nowhere in or around Yorkshire where the tower cannot be see provided you are high enough.
Being from Lancashire, I prefer our Winter Hill transmitter.
Yes mate Hahahaha I'm from Leyland 👍🏻👍🏻
they're both beautiful
What company service the lift?
COOL I like mark steel he came to my school
I wonder if they use it for research aswell
I live fairly close to it
I used to like Emily baker years ago, tidy bit of skirt. (How many people on here remember her? Only if you watched calendar)
Great
I want to go up
he looks like david cameron now.

It's a tower with a mast on top, like kingsmill best of both 😂
Huddersfield the land of giants Castle Hill/ Emley/ Holme moss
Interesting film, ruined only by the "arty" filming style, as is de riguer nowadays.
