More detailed explanation of the angled pen technique:
If you hold your pen strait up and down relative to the paper then you will create a symmetrical design as the pen moves around in the pen hole. Because the pen is smaller than the pen hole it is always pressing against the wall of the pen hole in the direction of movement of the pen/gear. The parallel line 'doughnuts' that can be added to the holes to make them smaller work because they make the hole smaller effectively insetting the pen closer to the geometric center of the pen hole. If you angle the pen relative to center of the design it does a similar thing and will make a parallel line too. This is hard to do consistently though. If you angle the pen relative to yourself (like in the video) the lines pen tip is no longer kept a uniform distance from the center of the pen hole and so the gap between the line made by the vertical pen and the angled pen will change as a function of position. Any angle you use will produce a different offset so if you angle the pen towards yourself it will turn out differently than if you angle the pen to your right.
The amount that the pen can be angled is limited by the width of the pen and the size of the pen holes. In earlier takes of the video it was hard to get the red marker to give a good solid line. This was because I was angling the pen too far over and the pen tip couldn't reach the paper because it was being pressed against the side of the pen hole.
