Have you ever thought that the beautiful Christ Pantocrator was originally painted , based on the image on Christ’s burial cloth known as the the Turin Shroud, originally held in Constantinople and Edessa?
Hey I’m wanting to attend the Orthodox Church. The one that I’m going to on the website says. Orthros is at 9 am and Divine Liturgy is at 10 am. And I was wondering what the difference is. And if I am supposed to attend both.
@@SamStandley-k3o The Orthros is a prayer service that happens before the Liturgy. You're welcome to attend it, but it's a lead-in to and not a part of the liturgy itself and you can feel free to come at 10am. For a little more on the Liturgy, you can watch our intro video here: ua-cam.com/video/f2uvXjjDjwQ/v-deo.html
you guys have helped me so much. i wasn't even a catechumen when i found you, and now im in the Church in no small part due to the intrigue your videos inspire ❤❤❤
I love being Orthodox. When you walk into an Orthodox Church it gives you the "feeling" that you're walking into a Faith that has been tested, worn well like a favorite pair of shoes, and lived in, and an awe of something older than you'll ever fathom. The depth is there, you just have to show up and participate. You don't have to fake feelings or emotions or try and drum up anything to "prove" you're a true Christian. The icons meet you there and "call" to you them. When I first came to an Orthodox Church the icon that drew me was the More Spacious than the Heavens. You just sit in aw and are stunned to silence as you look at the Christ icon or Theotokos. It's so overwhelming.
Your story telling is unique, informative, enlightening and inspiring! I thought I saw our small but beautiful church in your presentation… it was a surprise! ❤️☦️❤️
Thank you to the 100 episodes. I can not believe it has been that many. I started following you when I started my journey into the Orthodox Church, and they helped me in my instruction. I look forward to the next 100 episodes. Still not sure of your tea taste, I tried a number of what passes as tea in Australia in my visits hmmm. Have you tried purple tea from Kenya? Great teas from Africa not just Kenya, but Malawi and Tanzania,
wow you've done 100 episodes and still keep amazing energy. Found this channel recently and it's getting me excited to learn more about the history and symbology of Christianity.
I just subscribed. What a wonderful explanation. I learned about icons in an Art History class and the Pantocrator is my favorite. I learned so much. I am blessed by having received many icons. They help me remember that all those in Heaven are always with me. I would very much like to see a video explaining about the various hand gestures in blessing. I am Roman Catholic, and my father taught me to put my hand in the same way you did when blessing myself. Your channel is a blessing to me. Thank you and may God bless all who made this episode possible.
My personal favorite icon. I always loved it during my conversion, and it was the first icon I ever owned as it was gifted to me. It truly means the world to me
This past Sunday after Liturgy, my priestmonk blessed my two icons! This Pantocrator one and Our Lady of Perpetual Help! I am so glad that you uploaded this icon video during this time! Glory to God!
You might appreciate the new development that the highest ever quality scans of the original icon have been made available this year: sinai.legacyicons.com/
@@Unknown_Fool I'm Romanian. No thank you. At least where I live it would just mean feeding a highly corrupt system, not to mention I am not convinced at all by the claims of the Eastern Orthodox. But I appreciate your attempt, God bless.
The way I was taught to interpret the colours of Christ's garment as well as those of the Holy Mother of God is that red represents Divinity and blue Humanity. Christ wears a red tunic first, with a blue robe over it, showing us that He has put on our Humanity over His Divinity. The Holy Theotokos is usually shown with a blue dress and has a red veil over it, showing us that she has put on God's Divinity over her Humanity. But it depends on the Icon as to how colours should be interpreted (like in Rublev's Hospitality of Abraham with blue being shared between all of the Trinity).
In my opinion the greatest one EVER is where God is one side and man the other side. Powerful. Inspired. It’s actually hard to look at the eyes of the God side. He is scary almost
Again great episode and excellent way of celebration of 100th episode to describe icon of Jesus the Pantocrator. Btw ..did used on beginning also footage from Košice cathedral?
I love this icon! The 1/2 & 1/2 Sinai version. It makes me contemplate the nature of Jesus and also makes me a little uncomfortable, which somehow seems appropriate (?)
Food for thought: The Pantocractor and omnipotence. Some argue that the Hebrew and Greek scriptures do not support the idea of omnipotence. Thomas Jay Oord suggests that the proper translation of pantokratōr is "all-holding" and that the term "amipotence" is a better way to describe God's power.
Is that pantocrator icon with the different parts of the face split correctly? I would have thought the divine side of Christ would be his right side, which was more soft and pure, compared to the human left side.
You probably don’t do these types of videos but I see of a lot of images saying apana mudra are the original meaning of the hand signs in these icons. I like to think these icons were made before that time but I would like to know your opinion on it. Thank you.
It's just one of those assumptions made because things look vaguely alike and the meaning not researched. The appearance is similar but the meanings and origins are completely different. In the case of the blessing sign, it's still made in Orthodoxy all the time, mainly with the right hand, made only by clergy, and based off of Greek letters. Other hand gestures you may see in icons are taken from old Greek orators hand signs, designed to draw attention to truths.
I know it as red is divinity and blue is humanity. Christ is putting on humanity which is why it’s on the outside. For saints it is the other way around. Hopefully I remember it right from when the priest explained it to me when I was a kid 🤷♂️
While I do have the Pantocrator on display in the house, I have the Theotokos in the place of reverence in our home with an ever burning votive. BTW I am a Roman Catholic

@@PatristixSo orthros is optional. And the Liturgy is the main service?
Orthodox lore is absolutely wild. Like the art has soo many incredible details and easter eggs (pun intended), it is insane.
And there's even more than we can fit in videos! It's really incredible
2000 years of tradition will have that effect.
Episode 100. God Bless you all!❤☦️📿
