  • Fafnir was originally a dwarf, the son of the powerful dwarf king Hreidmar. He was known for his strength and bravery. Hreidmar possessed a great treasure, including a magical ring called Andvari’s Ring, which had been cursed by its previous owner. This curse doomed anyone who possessed the treasure to be consumed by greed and misfortune.
Blinded by greed, Fafnir killed his father to claim the treasure for himself. As the curse took hold, Fafnir became increasingly obsessed with guarding his hoard. Over time, his greed and selfishness transformed him into a monstrous dragon. He retreated to a remote lair in the wilderness, where he lay coiled around his treasure, ready to kill anyone who dared approach.
Eventually, Fafnir was slain by the hero Sigurd (also called Siegfried in the Germanic tradition). Sigurd, guided by the advice of the wise dwarf Regin-who was Fafnir’s brother and also driven by greed-approached the dragon stealthily. Using a specially forged sword named Gram, Sigurd killed Fafnir by stabbing him in a vulnerable spot from below as the dragon slithered over a trench Sigurd had dug.
After Fafnir’s death, Sigurd bathed in the dragon's blood, which made his skin invulnerable-except for a spot where a leaf had fallen on his back. However, Fafnir’s curse lingered, and the treasure continued to bring misfortune to those who possessed it.
