Weird how *all* the responses to this comment got deleted…maybe, after the 10th or 20th viewer called you out for accepting sponsorships from evil, exploitative sources, you might reflect on whether they might have a point?
Or you could handwave concerns away with a Reddit link, and tell your own fans to shove it?

Aside from the obvious stuff, what saddens me the most is that the country had almost infinite money to build amazing sustainable, livable and walkable cities and they are blowing it all on vanity projects and endlessly wide highways that are never going to be enough. There was so much opportunity to learn from other's mistakes and get it right.

If you were talking about ANY other place on the planet, I see your point. The reality is you are talking about a population in which the poorest native, non-immigrant probably makes $500k a year if they live in the current cities. The approach is always going to be "...spend it and make it opulent because what else are we going to spend it on?".

An example being that many people believe Dubai to be the richest city on earth, when in reality they don't even have half the billionaires of Boston. Middle easterners just showcase their wealth in a way that most western elite would find tacky.

Here in Australia, all the money is publicly scrutinised and has to be provided largely by the tax payer. No money can be pushed under the table to bribe FIFA officials.
Honestly, and I'm saying this from a purely organisational standpoint, we could pull off a killer World Cup. We've got the big stadiums that already can be converted for soccer matches - the infastructure around it is all there. We had the Women's World Cup last year and it was a smash, even non-soccer fans turned up in droves! We loved it!
The only thing you'd need to do is maybe expand a few stadiums in the regional cities like Canberra - which we've been wanting to do anyway for our domestic sports. I look at all this and just shake my head.

Can you imagine the added pressure on the players to beat the competition? Not from the other team but from the screens. Finally, can you imagine that if FIFA allows them to be functioning during a game, can you imagine them allowing anything other than the live feed or replays on them? Majority of poor people in developing countries don't have: Piped water, drainage, sewers, refuse collection, welfare payments (for basic food shelter and clothing), paved sidewalks, roads, street lighting, clean public schools access, clean public hospitals access, access to impartial justice. Providing all of those things will create millions of real jobs in addition to lifting the country out of hovel status. That's what our governments should be focused upon, not hugely expensive luxury projects. Just my take, no offense intended towards anyone.
