I was wondering this, too. Research says the key here is that the receiver caught the pass behind the line of scrimmage. In college rules, this means that ineligible player downfield is not relevant. Basically, it is classified as a screen pass or run play. In the NFL, this would have been a penalty.

Cal played some good schools (like Miami) close and lost every one of those games. Played 3rd and 4th QBs and down top two WRs. Also, one TD was a miscall, so it wasn't that big a score difference. I know, no one cares.

One of his toes was barely in, but a foot doesn't count in the front of the endzone, only the ball, which was on the receiver's back shoulder at that point. Based on that positioning, when the player finally did bring the ball up, he was leaning over the out of bounds, so there's no way the ball itself could have been inside the pylon at that point.

"Inside" the pylon is irrelevant. The rule states that the goal line extends infinitely in both directions on such a play.
