Those convertible top hydraulics never worked properly, even when they were brand new back in the 60's!

      @@LeftyPlaysRighty You're telling me !!!
Back in my youngster years I had a job in a body shop in So. Cal. An Arab looking dude had brought in a '64 Continental to have its black paint touched up.. another kid and I were admiring it during lunch break. He didn't believe me when I told him the top folded into the trunk. I got in and fired up the engine for added volts and tapped the top down switch and the balet began. The rear deck glided soundlessly to the fully erect position and the soft top disengaged from the windshield. It went about 4 inches and stopped dead with something from behind the rear seat making this hideous whining noise. I often wondered what happened to the classic Continental. I was fired after lunch

@@tracy4good probably cost the shop a couple hundred dollar repair bill . Friends told me a guy with a 66 Lincoln Continental convertible was showing off the top in front of their hang out bar one night and his stuck up halfway. He had to call someone who made a service call to the bar and repaired it and got it up

1966 Lincoln Continental phaeton. A magnificent automobile you could find cruising Park Avenue or the road into Hooterville. A car that proudly claimed in its ads that you could get as much as ten mpg. That's funny

It's not considered a phaeton just a convertible

None European car manufacturers in 60 and later had balls to design something like that. Great car!

Take your pick: Ford Skyliner, Thunderbird, or LIncoln Sedan... these things were the MOST advanced
cars in the world until the 1990's!!

    • @tracy4good

Mr. Happened... Did you know that FoMoCo originally intended the retractable hardtop for the 1956 Mark II Continental. But there was something about the Mark II's body design that made it unfeasible for use on a car that Ford ultimately lost $1,000 on each one delivered. With the back to back failures of the Edsel and Mark II and those ghastly poor selling '58-'60 Lincolns it's amazing FoMoCo didn't bankrupt

The slick top down look comes with the unusable trunk. I suppose folks who owned one got their groceries delivered or bought Mommy a mercury wagon.

Back seat for groceries. One is rarely getting groceries when driving with 4-5 people.

I seriously doubt that the people that drove these cars worried about how there we’re getting there groceries home .

If I owned this car, I would spend time with it, polishing caressing and whispering sweet nothings into its dash-board. Then I would slide into its interior and insert my key, whilst gently adjusting the 8 track volume (until I couldn't hear that awful music) and begin to thrust myself against the gas pedal. Harder, harder, until the engine started... heh heh heh.
