  • Due to complaints from various sources and myself, this is now an episode about Micro Jig's Gripper and our own 3d printed Gripper. I like Micro Jig products, but something seems a miss here. Other topics on this channel are : wood projects, tools, tool repairs, custom jigs, basic wood shop work, wood tools, 3D printers, RV repairs, car repairs, custom work

    check the FAQ for the gripper on their website. the green stuff needs to be cleaned, and can be replaced.

    Something wrong here. The real Griprrr needs to maintained with rubbing alcohol on the gripping surfaces. I keep little wipes in my shop. Secondly there IS a sacrificial backstop on the real thing, or should be. They send you 4-5 of them. I’ve used a Griprr for several years- there’s a time and a place for it (small pieces, tricky to hold) but it’s NOT a replacement for a standard push block. Finally- if it’s NOT gripping then for God’s sake don’t use it.

    I just had a kickback from a store bought gripper yesterday...shot a piece of purple heart across the shop like a bullet. Fortunately it missed me, and I was uninjured. Scary though...

      And purple heart is serious wood. I've sent the "gripper" back and refuse to have them here in my shop now. TOO much slip going on for me.

    There was some old man on here who made a wooden version of the gripper that could be turned end for end and it works okay and with used belt sander belts on it it does not slip. The exact measurements worked fine but I forgot to check it and sawed down the center of the layout, then as I looked him up to ask if he did that, I found I was older than that old man. A wooden block with a hook glued on the trailing end works just great.

    I believe the rubber on the bottom of the gripper is suppose to be cleaned regularly. I don’t know if that is part of the problem or not.

      Agreed. There are several “gripper” products that require cleaning of the gripping material to promote adhesion . But frankly, I still don’t trust it.

    Have you tried cleaning the rubber strips on the Gripper with Isopropyl alcohol? That's what MicroJig recommends when they start to slip. I have seen others video's where users were complaining about the gripper slipping and after cleaning the dirt off of the rubber strips they had no problems with slipping any more. Probably have to clean them once in a while is my guess. I just ordered a gripper and am looking forward to trying it out.

      To Coffee and Tools, it didn’t look very clean to me. The bottom looks filthy. One of the thin gripper surfaces is black in the middle and the wide centre surface clearly has what looks like pitch or glue. Using some shops used and abused throwaway was an epic fail in my opinion.

    • @SirTools

      @@992Archer Andy what is on camera for filming and what happens after the fact was there were actually 2 of these units and one was cleaned to see if it would make a difference. Both showed about the same deal, the bottom just slipped on various woods and my 3d printed one does not.

    I have 3 grippers they don’t look like yours I find that there directional if you turn them backwards they hardly grip mine are ridiculously grippy I have zero problems just keep them clean.

      Clean is the big one, but we've tried several "grippers" and the local wood club reported same slip issues and not using them due to this.

    Cut and clue a bicycle innertube to the bottom. Get one that's soft and somewhat thick. works every time. PS, you should have given a better demonstration of the results, actually cutting something with your jig. I was wondering if sawdust or dirty lumber would affect the grip?

    • @SirTools
      @SirTools  2 роки тому +2

      Good thought ! I'll have to try a few runs and see if it is effected.

      Everything effects the adhesive properties of the material…that is dust, dirt, sand, sawdust…much the way Velcro properties are effected by lint and thread and dirt…it too requires cleaning.

    Might be worth experimenitng with smooth-on silicone mold mixes. You could take/3D print something with a good gripping texture then cast some strips of it in silicone.

    I use old sanding belts on nearly all my pushing and fence accessories. Is there a reason you can’t have another retractable tab on the cutoff side? Also, I find weldwood rubber cement works best

    80 grit is an excellent idea! But on the gripper you need to clean the pads. I have one and never had a problem with it. Read the instructions and it will tell you how to do it. Larry

    If I had a gripper with the hard plastic surface, I think I'd try a thin layer of silicone caulk on it and see how that felt!

    • @sassafrasvalley1939
      @sassafrasvalley1939 2 роки тому +1

      I spread silicone caulk on my wooden jointer push block with a butter knife. It works like a charm.
      Just make sure it is fully cured and wiped clean b4 you use it. And… that you clean the butterknife before you stick it in her dishwasher.

      Silicone is the way to go, you're right on. Silicone on most surfaces has a very high coefficient of friction, it won't slip.

    The Grabber Pro is far superior to the Gripper, and it doesn't slip.

    Huge miss for this channel OP. The Grippr needs to have a wipe of the bottom of the tool with IPA (and ideally your material with a wet paper towel. 15 seconds of prep avoids every "point" made by OP (including the 3D printer version!). Ooof. Sorry for you hard miss here brother, but I like the energy of your channel! I down voted this video but I subscribed. :)

    I concur with the comments of improperly maintained gripping surfaces effecting the properties of the gripping material. HOWEVER, as woodworkers, there are countless ideas, innovations and plans on the internet for MAKING push sticks and blocks that good ole readily available and EVENTUALLY replaceable, 80+grit sand paper coupled with minimal manual downforce, work as well if not better than some “hi-tech modern innovation” does. Time to get back to our roots and thumb our noses at plastic fancy pants techie junk!

    Didn't look like there was enough surface base area on both sides of the piece to me if that helps also the base on the Micro Jig gripper was filthy that won't effectively or safely grip your piece when it's base is covered in Pitch/ Tar which ever people choose to call it lol .
    MJ I think say to use 91% or above Ethanol to clean the base rubber, you can also buy sacrificial back stops for the grippers they only cost a few quid or make your own, better pennies in your pockets haha hope that helps pal .
