You know, Oscar is awesome in...so many levels. Starting off with his design. He doesn’t have a funny armor, like, say, Lautrec, or something that represents his beliefs, like Solaire, but rather, the armor of a knight. A simple armor. His shield, which I suppose bears an emblem of his family. Oscar seeks to follow his family’s prophecy, and goes to the Undead Asylum, but he isn’t somebody special. He doesn’t live for some Deity, nor was he blessed by one, he’s just a simple man, harboring infinite selflessness within him. And here is when things get weird. Without looking at cut content, Oscar can either be trying to make himself the chosen one, prove himself and his family that he is, or looking for the real chosen one, the player. I like to think he seeks the second, because of the later actions. He opens a trap door of sorts, at the roof of our cell, and throws a body of a hollow with the key to our cell door. Oscar is helping us here, and he throws the body, and then looks at us, so he must be doing it on purpose. My idea is that Oscar, seeking to know what happens with the undead through the ringing of the bells, and hopefully help everyone bearing the same curse as he, goes to the asylum, knowledgeable that he himself can’t be the chosen one. He searches for somebody who hasn’t hollowed yet, and finds us. Then, figuring we must be the Chosen Undead, Oscar wants to help us, but, I think that through his journey towards the asylum, and through other things, he lost faith in himself, and was really close to hollowing. Judging from our fight with him and how he is close to death against the Asylum Demon, he isn’t necessarily a skilled fighter, but he should be experienced through his journey. So, Oscar is close to hollowing, he is about to give up, yet he reaches the asylum, finds us and frees us. Then, with renewed conviction, he fights the Asylum Demon to cut out the path for us. But, weak from his travels, a sword arm not strong enough, they all help in the Asylum Demon throwing him over and him landing, almost dying. And that’s when we find him. He finally gets to talk to us, near his death. He had just regained his convictions, his purpose was rekindled when seeing us, but when he gets thrown away by the Asylum Demon, he starts losing faith. Not in finding the chosen undead, task which he succeeded in, but in aiding him through his journey, teaching him about the lands and sharing bonfires. Oscar, in his dying moments, does a last act of selflessness and gives us the Estus Flask and the key. He himself could drink that Estus, and later we could share it if the need arises. But, he’s weak in many ways, so he knows that healing himself would only lead to another death, and another one, he would be a hassle. And, telling us to fulfill the prophecy, if not for him, for the rest of the undead, he dies and hollows, his dream of forming part of the legend that would save the undead gone.
Hey Alex! I got DS3 when it was released but sorta paused it until a few months ago when a friend from college asked me if I wanted to play with him, we beat it on co-op, it was because of him and your life videos that I came back and finished it, now we’re starting with the Ringed City, I sorta gave up when k got it because I beat the 1st and 2nd alone and didn’t wanted to play single player anymore. Anyways, I wanted to thank you for your lore series and somehow getting me back into the series!
Silver Mont it isn’t too bad, it looks alright in portable mode and runs at a consistent frame rate but it’s a shame that the games audio is super crusty.
The collectors edition strategy guide I had received on the day the game first released stated that he was Oscar of Astora, was there some in-game unused content that elaborated more on his name and background?
His armor, the elite knight's armor is still my favorite set and even after more than 10 years and multiple playthroughs, the elite armor is the set that I've used the most
Beats me, I don't read other people's theories (unless it's something being posted in the comments here or emailed to me) I'd rather do something else in my free time, y'know?
Oscar's dialogue sets the tone for the series. Profound and enigmatic. A character with whom I felt an instant rapport despite being on screen for so little time. And when he fades and turns hollow, I felt a deep remorse. Killing him then became a means of putting him out of his misery and a debt to the man I was once knew repaid. That is what I like about Dark Souls. As gay as what I just wrote may sound, the characters do elicit genuine reactions. Because the dialogue feels and impressions are made organically. You aren't told HOW you must feel about a character as can be the other games through their use of overly contrived dialogue. Also, because the Dark Souls world is so suspenseful and filled with peril, NPCs feel like genuine respite. And this makes you all the more interested in them.
I’ve been watching and listening to your videos since I was 16 and I’m 19 now and i have to say even though you still have yet to have your big blowup into the big world of UA-cam that you are by far my FAVORITE dark souls lore UA-camr. But I have to ask, since DS is being discontinued, what will you do now? @SilverMont
Is it being discontinued? Either way, I'll just make videos on whatever seems interesting and worth talking about. There's some pretty interesting games coming out next year, DMCV has me very interested.. I've been into that franchise since like 2002 or whenever the first one came out haha
I was never too fond of Oscar in all honesty, yes he gave you the most important item you could ever have but that's all I saw him as really, a sense of direction for noobies, a free estus flask, and a nice fire resist shield (assuming I don't get lucky with a BK shield). Adding a personality to him that could be expanded across the whole game would've made him more likable to me, like Lucatiel's whole adventure helped me connect with her and she was more than just a steel ring and a free effigy overall being a great NPC. Oscar easily could've been but just wasn't.
1:36 Why that guy not just throw the key, why with a whole hollow body. This mystery never solved and not a single dark souls fame lore youtubers dare to talk about this. Even Vaty and ENB avoid this.
Items have no physical presence in the world, so they have to be on bodies. If you mean from a lore perspective? Well maybe he's just an asshole and wanted to throw a body at you.
As far as I am aware, Oscar is the only person in Souls who dies, knowing he’s going to hollow. This is why I’m not a huge fan of Oscar. Most of the time, becoming hollow takes place over time. Whether a result of repeated deaths or losing hope over time or forgetting one’s duty/purpose, they progressive slide into being a hollow. Except in the cases of Gwyn or Lords of Cinder, who hollow as a result of using their soul to link the flame, only in Oscar’s case does a sane undead immediately hollow as a result of one death. It doesn’t make sense to me.
It is a little odd, isn't it? Lucatiel also seems to be aware that she's extremely close to hollowing, but it was a far more gradual process, all the same. Maybe Oscar felt so humiliated that he knew he'd never live it down. Then again, Oscar was in a fairly unique situation in that we found him whilst he was dying. Maybe undead can tell, during dying, if they are going to hollow.
I think everyone knows they are on the verge of hollowing. That it will happen sooner or latter. It is the nature of the deprived land of Lordran. You could also argue that Oscar's degradation and 'hollowing' is meant to take place over the course of the game. That it is not instantaneous.
Hey Silver Mont, it seems likely to me that the dragon crest shield, the one with the fire resistance, was made as a tool to appose dragons. Astora could have been around during the age of dragons after all
Yeah, I love your Older Oscar of Astora Lore Video more because the Elite Knight did use his Astora Straight Sword when fighting the Asylum/Stray Demon and NOT THE SILVER KNIGHT SWORD...
I'm not sure, to be honest. Some of the cut content I can definitely see why it's not in - but Oscar and Shiva's cut content? No idea. I feel like they would definitely improve the game and the characters.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the philosophical essay on DS - entitled 'The Absurdity Of Dark Souls'. You can find it hear fextralife.com/absurdity-dark-souls/

It would have been nice if we had the chance to drag Oscar out of the Asylum, as a gesture of thank you for freeing us
Nice people aren't allowed to have happy endings in Soulsborne.

Very interesting
Im not reading all that Tinchooo.
Hearing Oscar without the echo is just weird
Yeah, all of the NPCs sound a little funny without their in-game "filters"
Just goes to show how memorable the sound design is in these games.
Great content as always. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to create it and share it for free.
Well, thanks! And thank you for watching
in ds3, is the corpse that we loot ashen estus flask oscar's?
I don't think it's meant to be him, but it's certainly a reference to him as it's arranged in the same exact way!
I felt really crappy waking up today, but now, with this, I can't say the same. Thanks for the video Alex!
It always puts a smile on my face when I see a Sliver Mont upload. Thanks, Alex!
Thank you!

Good luck in the Ringed City, in that case!
Happy coincidence that you release a Dark Souls video just as I’ve started playing ds1 on the Switch.
How you enjoying it on the switch?
Silver Mont it isn’t too bad, it looks alright in portable mode and runs at a consistent frame rate but it’s a shame that the games audio is super crusty.
The first daddy may the sun light his soul 👐
The collectors edition strategy guide I had received on the day the game first released stated that he was Oscar of Astora, was there some in-game unused content that elaborated more on his name and background?
Only what I covered in the vid, for the most part
His armor, the elite knight's armor is still my favorite set and even after more than 10 years and multiple playthroughs, the elite armor is the set that I've used the most
It's definitely the most famous armour from the game! Looks awesome too, I love me a good tabard/surcoat
Did you like to think he was smashed through the ceiling by the demon, or did you like vaatis idea of it and think that seemed better?
Beats me, I don't read other people's theories (unless it's something being posted in the comments here or emailed to me) I'd rather do something else in my free time, y'know?
Velka is the hole in the ceiling through which Oscar drops us the key.
Sweet
Oscar is Vulka... dun dun dun!
Never forget the true hero
I never will
Also I get the feeling that Oscar could have ended up being a less "grossly incandescent" version of Solair... just saying.
Maybe we could'a convinced him to join Warriors of Sunlight.

i won't lie i do like this character a lot and just wish he did have more a role in Dark Souls 1
I’ve been watching and listening to your videos since I was 16 and I’m 19 now and i have to say even though you still have yet to have your big blowup into the big world of UA-cam that you are by far my FAVORITE dark souls lore UA-camr. Yeah. At least from what I read DS3 was the last
oscar was demoted from final boss to being beaten by the first mini boss?
Such is life in Dark Souls. Gael goes from being a weird guy showing his ass to everyone to the final boss.
Silver Mont So that's what the Lumbago does
Dillon Essigman yep ,it's very serious
In Gael's case, eating the Dark Soul cured his Lumbago. It gives you an idea of how powerful Uncle would be.

Yeah, he plays such a small role in the game, it's memorable in that he's the first NPC you meet but I would've enjoyed him to be more fleshed out.
1:36 Why that guy not just throw the key, why with a whole hollow body.
This mystery never solved and not a single dark souls fame lore youtubers dare to talk about this. Even Vaty and ENB avoid this.
Reza Lika Pretty sure Hawkshaw has talked about it actually, something to do with objects needing to be attached to bodies.
Vaati just makes videos about Reddit threads
Items have no physical presence in the world, so they have to be on bodies. If you mean from a lore perspective? Well maybe he's just an asshole and wanted to throw a body at you.
I forgot, did you post your own build anywhere? The one for your avatar character.
Usually just some faith and then quality, depending on which longsword I'm using

- or at least during the war on dragons, like Gwynns Anor Londo
That was awesome ❤️
Thank you Monty your videos make my day ❤️
Damn you Silvermont... I was trying to stay away from Dark Souls. Watching your video has me hurting for a Souls fix... and I love you for it 😉
Yeah, I love your Older Oscar of Astora Lore Video more because the Elite Knight did use his Astora Straight Sword when fighting the Asylum/Stray Demon and NOT THE SILVER KNIGHT SWORD...
FUCK YEAH NEW LORE VIDEO
Come on! If you are gonna Cosplay as Oscar, at least wield the Astora's Straight Sword!
Aye I actually just got DS1 remastered a week ago :D loving it
Having Oscar follow, mirror then oppose you sounds like _SO MUCH BETTER_ a game!
Why would they choose such a boring, lackluster end for him? Geeze...
I'm not sure, to be honest. Some of the cut content I can definitely see why it's not in - but Oscar and Shiva's cut content? No idea. I feel like they would definitely improve the game and the characters.
One day i'll make a Real DSRemastered.
Ha died at the first area what a casul
Oscar is trying his best
@@SilverMont yeah I apologies Oscars pretty cool
I cri
Hype
Hey thanks for remastering my lore but I got something wrong but that’s my secret
You're not Oscar!
Silver Mont nope but u did in the past
I did, that's true. I've almost finished remastering the old lore videos from 2013.
Silver Mont well nice talking to you MR Sliver

Notification squad is here!
Honestly, I thought it would have been awesome if they gave Oscar his questline in the remaster. Even if it was just optional content that you had jump through a few hoops in the Undead Asylum like you did to access the DLC.
Either way, amazing video as always, my dude!
