For better context these fans are typically found in so-called rack mounted servers that are only 1.75 inches high, 19 inches wide, but are can be around 42 inches deep. This means that powerful fans are required to draw cool air from the front of the chassis and exhaust it out the rear over quite a distance.
I guess the space is required for such a powerful motor. It probably doesn’t affect airflow as much as you think because the majority of the air moved by a fan happens with the faster moving outer part of the fan blades .
Use a portable phone charger battery pack, so you can plug an old usb charging wire into it. Connect that to a mini DC-DC converter to get the required 12v.
Those are stationary guide vanes. When air goes through a fan the air begins to rotate in the same direction. Those vanes straighten the spinning air so the flow is more laminar and smooth.
