Jacobus-Hendrikus Maris: A Dutch Master of Landscapes and Moonlit Canals. Born in The Hague in 1837, Jacobus-Hendrikus Maris became one of the leading figures of the Hague School, renowned for his atmospheric landscapes. After studying at the Hague Academy and in Antwerp, Maris spent several years in Paris, where he was influenced by the Barbizon School and artists like Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. His works, such as Veduta di Montigny-sur-Loing, reflect these French influences, while his later paintings, like the famous Canale sotto la luna (1882), beautifully blend French techniques with traditional Dutch scenes. Despite suffering from asthma later in life, Maris continued to paint, leaving a lasting impact on Dutch art before his death in Karlsbad in 1899. Join us as we explore his artistic journey and lasting legacy.

De gebroeders Maris (Jacob, Matthijs en Willem) waren alle drie begenadigde tekenaars, schilders en aquarellisten.
