  • Sorry the length is long and not for the faint of heart. However, I explain every nuance of how to assemble my rig. I go step by step explaining best type of material to use. I also explain the three different ways I use the rig for surface, sub surface, and both methods combined. Sit back, enjoy, and get to tying!

    Thanks for sharing this! I don't think I am going to copy you exactly but I will use some of these principles in my own rig. I am going to switch to a tightline setup for my nymphing and I am going to try some dropshotting

      I would be real curious to know how you do drop shotting, In general you will do well with a switch to tight lining. You are a good angler already so switching up/tweaking should yield very good results for you!

    Going up to the Catskills for the month of August and will put the Mono Rig (that you kindly awarded me) to use. Presently use a somewhat different rig on my Euro Rod so should be a fun comparison. Waters too warm here in NJ for trout (great for smallmouth) but hope to fish the Catskill tailwaters and update the results. Be well and stay safe!!

      It has definitely been a lot different then last year. Hopefully some rain and cool temps headed our way soon. Good luck in the Catskills. Lucky that you get to go for the month :) Best of luck out there. Shoot me some pics via email of what you get on the rig. Eager to hear how you do. Good luck and tight lines!

      Thanks for tuning in! I don't think I will be out on the water for almost two weeks. I am busy getting ready for a family trip next week for the beach. So my guess is its going to be a little bit until I am out again. Going to try and publish one more video before I go of film I have ready to edit. I had a good trip to the Yellow Breeches I am working on today and tomorrow. Hopefully I have it posted by Friday.

    Full information very informative, wild so many knots . A lot of work and time for a rig setup . You need a brighter light , that isn't yellow for better visuals . Kind of dark to see things clearly. Man what's that like 7 knots in total ? Never been one to trust to many knots in my lines but never fly fished yet , but hopefully soon I can get my rods out and try them out . Pretty crazy rig but seems to work for you . Nice vid

      I totally agree about the lighting! I wish I had a dedicated well lit spot. I will have to play around with changing bulbs in the basement, as well as maybe external lights that I use if I film down here again. Sorry about that!
      I believer you are right. About 6 or 7 knots. Definitely something where you have to check them for durability as you tie them. However, I have never had a rig break yet. What is great about it is that if I get snagged in a tree and can't get to it, I can pull hard it the breaking point is on the tippet where it ties into the last tippet ring. Therefore, the whole rig is in tact, but all I broke off is the tippet I tied on to fish. Great feature to this.

      @@tightliningmd For like 40 dollars you can get a lighting set on amazon . I bought some about 6 months ago for my unboxings since my room I use was pretty dark and had to put other lights around me but caused a lot of glare so the lights with umbrellas work greatly and pretty cheap . Also not a problem bro just was putting input in so we see things easier . The lamp pack I bought has 3 light stands and 4 umbrellas . Not the best but works greatly for a smaller room . I spend to much on a channel that makes no money for me but it is what it is lol

    The last time I was tight lining a lost a lot of fish. The fish were smaller but I saw a video that if you are using fly line to a standard leader you will lose fish. Do you think you lose less fish with this rig than a standard fly line to 9ft leader with sighter material tied in?

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  5 років тому +1

      For sure! I could see where with the fly line and regular leader that is a problem. From the time I set the hook I have constant pressure on them, no sag in the line, and keep pressure on the fish with a "C" in my rod to prevent them from running me into certain place to break me off. This system I use has given me a ton of fish. I can consistently count on half a dozen to a dozen fish on any stream I fish. I have even had 30-50 fish days. I highly encourage you to consider. Takes some getting used to for sure, especially the first time you hold a 10' rod. That was super foreign to me. Now it is like a third arm and I am just used to the extension, and it is necessary for good drifts. I use barbless hooks too and I don't lose many fish.

    I grew up trout fishing in the Colorado Rockies and have been away from the sport for a long time. I have tied my own flies and fly fished a bit when I was younger, but this is a very interesting method. I stumbled across your videos as I began to research local fishing areas in Frederick County. Isn't the length of this rig too long for the Maryland catch and return areas? Do you have any success with this rig in the delayed harvest areas like Catoctin Creek Park? How about in the Hamburg or Whiskey Springs Ponds. Thank you for your time.

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  4 роки тому

      Hey Matt,
      I was unaware if the rig is too long for MD Catch and Return. I know PA it would be considering a bit too long, in which case I have to shorten it a few feet for trips out there. However, I have never seen anything on rig length in MD. I will need to look into it.
      Which creek(s) are you talking about for delayed harvest in frederick. I have really only fish Big Hunting and Owens. I have done very well on Big Hunting, all catch and return I believe, and got one nice wild brown out of Owens, but didn't fish it much due to marginal water/conditions.
      I am unfamiliar with Hamburg/Whiskey Springs ponds. I have fished for brookies near an area that might be related to that, but I am not sure.
      Frederick County is loaded with good fishing. This rig, even if shortened/modified some would still fish excellent. My previous rig used to be shorter. I recently lengthened it for longer casts for nymphing and specifically streamer fishing.
      Make sure you google "Frederick County Trout Streams"... you will find some good stuff!

    Can I substitute the 15lb amnesia red with the green?

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  4 роки тому

      Great question. I think you can. I noticed Dom, from Troutbitten, with a pic of a leader that was green. Now that you say it, I bet that's what it was. At the end of the day its not in the water, so color shouldn't be a huge deal. Good luck with it and let me know if you notice any problems!

    I've turned into a bit of a leader junkie and love trying new formulas. I have a few questions though.
    1. What is the significance of the tippet ring between your 12lb Maxima and your 15lb Amnesia? I have a similar set up, but i just blood knot them together. Why use a tippet ring there?
    2. I use one long peice of transition material from my Chameleon to my Bi Color Sighter. Are you using 3 pieces for vision, or do you step down for more distance?
    Quick tip, that I was taught and would like to share.. I put a bubble of UV knot sense around each knot. It helps with strength, but also helps with my guides. smooths any pointy edges on the knots. Great Video!

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  4 роки тому

      I totally get it. Here are my answers:
      1.) The significane is so that cleanly ties into the other because of the varying types of line/diameter. Also, this allows for a potentially clean break off point in the event of the snag. I have fished this for a few years now though and NEVER broken where the first tippet ring is tied in (by the amnesia/maxima line). I only break off at the second tippet ring, where my actual tippet is.
      2.) Its a mixture of both, although mostly for sight. All three colors allow for me to see the rig well in high or low light situations. Its not very long in that section, although I have seen some people with super long bi color sections. I don't think it is necessary, so really only for strike detection and view just above the water. If it pauses, jumps, moves at all.... SET!
      For your tip, which I appreciate, are you saying you put like the UV resin around where knots are. Like what people use to shell casings/wing etc on flies. Then hit it with the UV light? Just making sure I am understanding correctly. If so, that is a great tip. I think it would help some. That is the only fall back is sometimes it doesn't shoot line clearly do to the knots/tippet rings. However, overall I think this rig can't be beat.
      Thanks for watching, commenting, and helping me learn a new trick!

      @@gregoryhall152 Falls is a pretty cool place. I assume you mean on the Gunpowder, like the area of my last video. I would have KILLED to be out on the water today. I bet it was AWESOME. Rain, overcast, a quick bump in the water overnight after a heat spell. My guess was it was on fire. I fished it Monday with a few friends in that section. Netted 7 fish in about 2 hours of fishing. Was pleased with the results given the low flows and heat. Had I stuck with the mop fly the whole time it would have been a double digit day, but I tried to be modest and throw other stuff too.

      Tight Lining MD good day on the water yesterday. Waded to the damn. It was gnarly up there yesterday.
      I never answered your question about the UV knot sense. Yes I purchased UV knot sense from loon and put a small bubble around the knots. Protects but keeps things smooth, especially anything going through my guides.
      Would love to keep in touch as we fish the same waters. I’m always willing to share and learn. Never know may actually fish some waters with ya one day.

      LOL! I feel the same way. They take a bit of time, but the good news is they hold up for quite some time. I have been using mine for almost a year and haven't had to swap it out yet, can't beat that efficiency. I see some places that sell different kinds, but not really many that do the actual mono rig. I have considered if I should do fly tying videos as well. Then it makes me wonder if I sold the rigs, and flies, how that would go..... You may be on to something Jake :)
