As one of those priests present at this talk, I want to thank you for this, Jonathan. All of those clergy whom I spoke to after the talk felt like it was the high point of our week-long assembly. This is a beautiful offering and I think that it manifests the Gospel in an honest and entirely practical way. Perhaps this might have been a bit edgy for some folks, though I find that hard to understand. I think that you were offering us both the reality of the world and the promise of the Kingdom of God. Much food for thought here! Thank you.

So, at the end of this presentation, I learned to keep my Orthodox life centered in Christ at the same time to keep it open to every kind of being as long as the being is non-demonic, and I must be careful and aware in case our Lord disguises as one of them.

This is one of the most profound and intelligent pieces of material on religion i've ever seen. Really having a sense that this is exactly what the subject religion should be all about in school. You do such a good job at being both extremely academic, but also extremely profound in your way of presenting this stuff! Huge thanks from Denmark, and keep up the good work. P.S pro marketing-tip: Take the part where you talk about St. Christopher and the cannanite/caninite(not sure which is which) and put it out as a separate video, if it worked as an article you can be damn sure it works as a video.

I too was at this talk and found it very compelling. We have to stand in that middle place between this world and its brokenness and that sacred space where the cosmic vision of Christ is revealed. We move from the altar into the world. It made me think of the hymn from Holy Week, "Thy Tomb, O Christ, is the fountain of our resurrection!" Everyone I spoke with after the talk also loved it.

For the Game of Thrones fans out there: the carved icon of St Christoper that Jonathan showed from his studio for some reason brought to mind the Direwolf that House Stark have on their heraldry. As the 'good house' situated right at the edge of the civilised world, that would fit with what Jonathan is saying about St Christopher, placed at the end of the known and the unknown.

Thanks Jonathan, another great video. I would like to comment about the relation between your work and Jordan Peterson's work. In my view, Professor Peterson is standing not only on the border between chaos and order but also somewhere between the material and the spiritual worlds. Being a scientist his feet might be grounded in the empirical, nonetheless he is clearly pointing towards the transcendent. I believe those who will feel the call to step beyond where Peterson is standing, will potentially benefit greatly by your presence online and by having the possibility to listen to a voice which is at once 'modern' and at the same time firmly rooted in Orthodoxy and tradition. I know you already have a Patreon campaign to support your drawings, my hope is that you will consider starting another in order to upgrade and expand this channel. Personally I would definitely be among your supporters.

45:30 I’m a nurse and I know people like this, MH/MR, intensely religious, they sort of practice every religion and no particular religion at the same time. There are more people on the margins than we realize, ready to fall through the cracks at any moment, people like Margeolyn who *are* in the cracks and we know them, and all to many who are “lost to follow-up”

One complaint: categories do not actually break down in society. To believe that they do is, in effect, to believe modernism's boast that it can break those categories. It can't; the categories are just fine. It's society who suffers when it believes the categories are broken.
Zombies are not created when categories break down. They are created when people fall into the illusion that the categories have broken down. This isn't merely a verbal problem. The categories are always there for us, should we wish to revisit them. We have to be careful with our words lest we inadvertently support the illusion that the categories have been removed and therefore that there is some reality or validity to the zombie state.

    Jonathan,
You had me at Zombie Apocalypse! haha....
But in all seriousness your talk resonated with me. I was spellbound. I find it more than coincidental that the creation of the Zombie Logos (if I am using the term correctly) was given birth at the same time that Western Judeo-Christian civilization gave way to the Post-Modernist cultural revolution which has brought about great chaos.
I believe this modern rise in the cultural fascination with zombies is a collective subconscious understanding of the coming chaos and apocalypse. To me the zombies represent those who have succumbed to the nihilism so deeply that they have lost their souls and no action, no matter how depraved or demonic, is unacceptable. For myself, I feel an urgent need to prepare, much like how Noah must have felt. This began in a mustard seed about 20 years ago, maybe even sooner subconsciously. This was merely when I became consciously aware that there was a tear in the fabric of human civilization analogous with the veil at the crucifixion. This feeling began as merely a tickle on my consciousness but has exponentially increased over the last several years.
With each passing day I feel a greater need and urgency to get ready; Physically, Emotionally and in particular Spiritually. For I have a deep foreboding of a great crisis coming. Similarly, I would assume, with those who are aware of an approaching hurricane and are running out of time to store up food and board up the windows and doors. And I mean this not simply metaphorically but in a very literal sense. I feel very deeply in my core being that those who have not stored up food, shelter and water will be at the mercy of God or Luck or Chance, which ever one puts their Faith in.
I too used to be an Atheist and I too began searching for something to believe in, a deeper meaning to our existence as I began to see how empty the nihilism of the Post-Modern age was becoming. I believe we are coming to an irreversible tipping point. We see it all around us, this Balkanization of cultures and beliefs, while civilization seems to be crumbling before my eyes. Post-Modern Collectivism is going to be the hammer that shatters the glass that separates civilization from anarchy. Most people have no concept how thin the veil is that stands between civilization and barbarism.
I used to think I was a lone crazy man running around shouting "We're Doomed!" but now I see a great collective consciousness that see's and feel's the same thing, "Something Wicked this Way Comes!"
I often wonder if other believers in God also believe the prophecies within the scriptures are currently playing out in front of us. I also sometimes ponder if this is just a stage or cycle within human history that must play out every thousand years or so. This descension into total anarchy and chaos before the resurrection of civilization back out of the ashes once again.
History seems to be playing it's same old song all over again.
I do believe the Zombies are coming, but unfortunately they are neither easily recognizable nor slow and mindless. Unwittingly...may be.. but they are certainly serving Satan.
Based on my understanding of your presentation you seem to have similar thoughts in this regard that I hope you delve into deeper in future videos. Much of your presentation put into words, thoughts I have been having for years. One might even call them premonitions, or even taking it further, visions. Whatever term one wishes to use.
Thank you for the presentation. I have enjoyed the education and thought food other videos of yours has brought me but this one made me decide to become a subscriber.
P.S. It hit me while I was typing this, the irony that my Avatar happens to be that of a Dog faced Soldier.
As an Agnostic, Dyslexic, Insomniac I often keep awake at night contemplating the existence of Dog.
    .

I agree. In fact I think it is far worse than the possible end of the world. I believe we may be facing the possible extinction of Western Civilization. And I'm not joking about that. I believe that threat is very real. I PRAY it is only a temporary reset and that within a generation or so my Grandchildren might have the possibility of living in a free land without tyranny and gulags.

    • @alexandercamlin8889
      @alexandercamlin8889 7 років тому +4

buffaloroams2 I too had these premonitions, and years ago began the process of preparing myself and extracating myself from the dominant culture. I reasoned that the only way to prepare for the unpreparable was not to stockpile food and ammo in some fevered apocalyptic paranoia, burying myself into one location like a tick, totally dependent on my finite stores, but to cultivate my ability to acquire and craft my needs and my adaptability to novel environments, discipline and condition my body and mind, and repair the damage in my soul. Even if I am hopefully wrong, such a process will not have been time ill spent.

7:48 - Liturgical zombies - there is certainly such a thing, and they do exist in large numbers. It is Orthodox Christian parishioners who come to Liturgy services weekly, often for many decades, but never grow up spiritually (nor they have any desire to do so). In my observations, they comprise the majority of the crowd at a typical Sunday service.

Regarding the Armenian manuscript image, I would suggest that is a picture of "outside are dogs and sorcerers..." (Rev 22:15), especially considering the hat on the man. But I do love the article and presentation. Regarding the Coptic image, those doors are doors of protection; and into this comes "I am the door." Again, Revelation speaks of the assurance of the martyrs, the safety of their souls. It is important to remember that we can't really apply our sensibilities to all others; these have become the persecuted outsiders in their own countries.

Interestingly as well (you may have picked up on this already), St Christopher ended up going to Lycia where he converted two prostitutes before being beheaded. The name Lycia appears to be linked in to the greek word "lykos" meaning "wolf" through the legend of Leto being guided to the river Xanthos by wolves. Lykos is also the root for the word "lycanthropy" ofcourse.

The only criticism I've had for Jonathan Pageau is that he doesn't have a high Christolgy, and he nods to Neo-gnosticism, giving gnostic heresies more consideration than they deserve. Paul Kingsnorth offered a kind, gentle, friendly, but firm correction in Pageau's interview with him. I hope Jonathan will have to wisdom to accept that, and seek a deeper, more transformative relationship with Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the good of his soul. Otherwise, he always makes things interesting, and his talk on how iconography shifted in the West to more sensual sculpture was really good. I enjoyed the presentation very much. 😊

When men and women are the same thing, when good and bad are subjective, insanity is at it's fullest. And from that fullness and chaos, the seed of it's opposite awakens. Even now the Truth of the World burns as a Flame upon this lowly earth. Scales will fall from eyes. Balance will be a thing again. And Beauty will reign. Truth will be remembered.

Eastern Europeans have most of the best European Undead Myths, although the Celtic Barrow Wight ought to be a stronger contender. The Ghanaian “Zombie” is, properly understood, so different from any of them that it’s conflation is a cultural oddity. The type of undeath cinematically pioneered by Romaro strikes me as much more like the Celtic Wight then the Voodoo slave, or the Imps of the Devil in Carpathian lore.

    Matthew 8:21-22
21 Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
22 But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead."

Jesus also rose from the dead, and amassed a mob of zombies. Good Christians abound, yet also crave the 'flesh' of the Messiah, whether symbolic, or literal. Please comment on Christianity and it's apparent loss of direction. Many of the largest churches have succumbed to cultural pressure; a fact that was present during the inception of the umbrella term of "Christianity."

Okay that is twice now Mr Pageau has shown Harpies when speaking of Sirens. Harpies are ANGERED being associated with those sweet-voiced Barbiesque vain fluff-balls. But hey, it's all Greek to me. My hair also reminds me of Death because when it is cold, I am helpless without Him and His coverings. I can barely change a flat-tire much less make a sutiable outdoor covering for travels in snow. I can't run faster than a lion, not leap higher than a tiger. I am dead without Him. Like literally. Every moment .. dead dirst and ash animated by Love.

Jordan Peterson's colleague at the UoT, John Vervaeke, has written a book on this subject that I think you would enjoy. It's called Zombies in Western Culture, and it covers much of the same symbolic ground that you cover in this video, from some different angles since he isn't Orthodox.

For some reason I couldn't see this video in my subscriptions page even with refreshing many times, not until i un- and resubscribed to your channel. I was informed of the video only by Dr. Petersons twitter, and there has been some fuckery going on with various UA-cam channels lately, videos not showing up, viewers unsubscribed from channels without them doing anything themselves and now Jordan himself not being able to access his channel. Let's hope it's just technical hiccups, gave a follow on twitter to keep updated.

While I can understand some of the ideologically possessed would want to silence Jordan Peterson (after all he did declare outright war to the postmodernist neo marxists with his program to cut the rate of enrolment in their university coursed by 75%) I would be genuinely surprised if the same was happening to Jonathan Pageau.
