  • This is a long in depth look, step by step of creating your own #user #multisample user #patches in the Roland Fantom G. I made this video for those of you out there like myself that have been wondering how to sample and map out your other #outboard #gear and #VST #instruments into the #FantomG across the #keybed.
    #Roland #FantomG #Sampling #Creating #Custom #Patches Create #Multisamples #Instrument #Mapping
    Please forgive me for the shaky camera. I made this video 1 handed.
    First thing you want to do. choose your menu button. Hit f1 project. Hit F4 create. Then F8 create. Name project MySplDfltF which stands for "my sample default folder". F8 ok. Yes to create project. then continue where the video starts.
    I recommend creating a default folder for all of your sampled sounds. From my experience. I don't know if I just haven't fully figured out the Fantom yet or what but I found it tough to load, recall & find all your samples you save & created. I find it is easier to organize your samples & recall ALL of your sample patches that you create and customize. When you create & save a beat using your custom sample patches. Save your project with the "SAVE AS" button under your Menu button to create a new project folder/name to save your new beat. That way you never overwrite your folder with all your samples saved in it.

    7 years later… still one of the most useful G8 tutorials on YT.
    Do you still have the G8? I only got mine (almost mint condition) last year here in Australia for AUD2000.
    Incredibly rare. Love the keyboard, aftertouch, sampling capability and that unbeatable screen!!
    I midi it up to my FA07 which has the more modern SuperNatural sounds which I can play from my G8 (and of course I get access to the FA’s polyphony too)!

    Good teaching. A lot of musicians on UA-cam know their instruments, but they are not teachers. Keep up the good work.

      Gary Clement thanks bud. i always try to pass on as much knowledge as i can to whom ever. I don't consider myself a teacher so to speak because I'm %100 self taught & still learning day by day. i haven't touched my G8 in a while but i keep getting emails from newbies that just bought themselves a Fantom, continuing to ask for more vids. i remember how difficult it was just to navigate & perform your basic tasks when i 1st got mine. It is pretty dam intimidating when you power up the Fantom for the 1st time if you are a newbie to any kind of workstation. So i may do a few more when i have time. I've just been so busy in the past year.

    Best sample tutorial for the Fantom G out here in tube land, you gotta know where they are when you want them, project folder tip is Great!

      FreddieSamples thanks bud. i always sampled similar to this for Propellerheads Reason & laid out my samples in the same manner in the NNXT in Reason & then saved the NNXT patches. i figured the same concept should apply with the Fantom G...& it did. It worked out great if this is what you want to do

    YOu really took some time to explain this where noobs can follow. Roland made it complicated to do simple things, i guess they had reasons. I wish you would make tutorials on simpler things and functions of the Fantom. BTW Roland decision to discontinue this workstation was really dumb.

    Hey man! Thanks for this nice video. Good job! You probably figured this out, but I will say it anyway. This is about what you called 'Project Folder'. Let me add some more information to it by explaining what the Fantom's project concept is.
    As you know, the Fantom G provides 3 different usage modes: Single, Studio and Live. Each mode used for different purposes. You can also have different settings applied to the pads and other FG controllers, like the sliders and knobs.
    Now the project: A single FG project is indeed a physical folder that can reside inside the Fantom G memory or inside an external USB flash drive, as the one you used in your video. The nice thing about a project is that it contains all related content, assets and settings that you are working with in any of the 3 FG modes. Meaning that a single project can have all the stuff you program for your Live, Single and Studio modes and also all the settings of FG controllers, Pads, Knobs, MIDI clips, Sample clips, RPS Frases, Songs, and all the 512 user presets with custom content too. So, it doesn't need to be something specific to a song or to a sampling work. It is a really nice way of organizing your FG content and the only limitation, which makes me feel sad, is the amount of memory available per project, which is 1GB. So, if you create a project and work over any/all FG modes and fill it up with data up to 1GB, you can save that project to an external media and load it whenever you need.
    In my case, for instance, I create a project of a specific genre, let's say Electronic Music, and program many user sets, layers, pads with samples, custom multisample patches, custom tone patches, etc, all in a single project. Then I save it to the USB and keep a backup in my computer.
    Hope this makes sense to you and can help you in any way.
    All the best man!

    Hey man... Great job on the explaining sampling ...However, I noted that you went and did "one shot" mode recording, yes? and that you were limited to those 16 pads, yes? Knowing that if this restricts you to 3 note step recording that gives you a 61 key range, why don't you just record out or just not use the "one shot" method and go the other modes because you still don't have to loop anything and your edits are still the same BUT, now you will find that you WILL be able (given memory) be able to record your sounds note for note across the entire 88 keys (if you want) ...Firmware updates ver 1.5 will now allow you 1GB memory. Anyway, I hope this helps as I have the G8 too. Cheers. ;)

    Nice video bro! Do sampled patches have velocity? Do the keys work dynamically?

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  7 років тому

      Spyros Stouraitis it all depends on how many times you want to record that sample & its character of sounds & nuances & layer your sounds into the Fantom. It's all up to you. i just sample at max velocity & layer them over top of the Fantom G instruments to give it a more authentic sound rather than a dry sound. Don't get me wrong...the Fantom Gs instrument patches all sound amazing but this helps to add that spice & sizzle that it is lacking when it comes to the Fantoms Ethnic & its Synth patches

    If there is only 128 multisample banks available, does that mean you can only have 128 patches for a project?

  • @Andurst

    QUESTION! I hope someone sees this.... I was able to record 4 octaves (4 samples) but when I want to save them the screen tells me my memory is full. I've created patches before (that's why it's full). My question is: Once the patch is created and saved, can I delete the samples I used to create it? Will my saved patch be erased if I delete those samples? I'm just hoping to delete those samples to have some free memory to be able to save new samples. Thank you!

    • @JokerMansBeats

      Andrew Balboa are you using an additional usb memory stick? on mine Im using a 16gig stick. & thats where i save everything. i noticed that the Fantom Gs internal memory itself does not hold much. which is why i do it this way. I've tried loading samples straight into the fantom but wasn't able to load everything i wanted. if you have the internal memory maxxed out, it is only capable of storing 1gig of information. i always save everything to the external usb. now the only down side to this i failed to mention in the video...is when you start to accumulate tons of samples. the project folder takes a long time to load because lets face it. it is an older machine & isn't as advanced a computer now days. i have tons & tons of samples saved into mine. i always turn it on, load up that folder before anything i do...walk away for a few minutes & let it read everything it needs to read. come back & it's loaded & ready

    • @Andurst
      @Andurst 7 років тому +1

      I do have an additional 64GB usb stick. I load my project from the usb stick but if I want to import additional samples to that project it won't let me... it says "Memory full". I can add as many samples as I want into my usb stick, but it's useless if I can't import them.
      What I ended up doing was crating multiple projects... Pretty much a project per song... which is a pain in the ass when you have to wait for the project to load in between songs.
      It's really weird, the Fantom will tell me I have 64GB of free space but that my sample memory is full.

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  7 років тому

      yea it sounds like its loading your samples into the internal memory (which doesn't hold much) & not keeping it inside the usb for some reason.

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  7 років тому

      it is a hassle doing it this way. but it's the only way i figured out how to sample large samples & load & save them as instrument patches on the fantom g.

    • @NeilWall
      @NeilWall 6 років тому +1

      I know this is an older message but - sample memory is IN the fantom - your 64GB space is attached TO the Fantom. When you load a project (from Fantom storage OR external USB) all the sample files in your project are loaded to the Fantom's memory (RAM). So, if you have not upgraded the RAM, you can have stacks of external storage and insufficient RAM space available to load it's samples to. From the manual "The Fantom-G comes with 32 MB of memory into which audio samples can be loaded. However, in some cases, 32 MB of memory will be insufficient for loading large amounts of data. In such a case, you will have to add separately sold memory (DIMM). Memory can be expanded up to 128/256/512 MB."
      I've upgraded mine to 1GB and it works OK. With lots of big sample files though it will max out and give a "Memory Full" error while loading the project. It's what JMB was saying I reckon.

    I was taught not to normalize but theres no other way to do it in the Fantom. How does it sound once normalized and if you layered that sound with other fantom g sounds and recorded back into cubase do you think the normalized sound will be a problem because its been recorded normalized and then may have more compression done to it and then mastering compression etc.Just wondered have you tried recording and mixing any of your made synths back into a DAW.

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  8 років тому

      The reason why I normalize is so I can bring the volume up even more rather than just giving it the 12db boost. Far as recording into a DAW. everything sounds good in the mix. I guess it all really depends on your ears & skill level far is mixing but I myself have not came across any issues tracking in beats and mixing mastering inside of Cubase

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  8 років тому +1

      and to respond to your question about layering sounds from East West with the sounds in the Fantom G, it definitely sounds killer when you layer some of the EastWest Middle Eastern flutes layered over and doubled up with some of the Fantom flutes. same goes for horns, violins and pretty much everything else.

    • @beakf1
      @beakf1 8 років тому +1

      +JokerMansBeats you know what i was thinking why bother sampling vst sounds because most of the tweakability is in the vst but then i though some of the samples of flutes etc in the fantom are lame and i wouldnt mind some VSL library sounds sampled to mix and apply fantom effects too. The only thing is is some orchestral librarys are deep sampled and have 50 layers per note which is not just velocity but proper tambre changes like brightness or dullness from hitting a key harder or softer. Now when you sample one sound you pick only one sample and the fantom g applies velocity which is really just volume change but no bright or dull tambre change (can you put more than one sample per key? maybe you could do 4 if it allows like a soft stuck medium struck hard and very hard). I dont know how deep sampled East west is. Another thing you would lose is crossfades for say a string going from soft to loud and again the tambre changes. But for just adding better sampled flutes than the fantom already has then its worth it because some of them i wonder why they bothered. Also because there are deep samples in these librarys it might be worth setting the fantom g to one velocity setting for all keys so no matter how hard you hit the key the velocity stays the same and that way you will have even velocity all up the keyboard from the recorded vst instead of one 100 velocity and one 64 velocity etc. About the normalizing it was a mastering thing but i remember now normalizing is ok if youve recorded properly which you have. The issue was recording too low and normalizing brings up the noise floor. Infact those digital samples will contain hardly any noise because they have been recorded well, so the only noise that would be added is passing though the fantom g which is good quality. I might even be temted to record at -10 on the meter and then normalize. As long as it doesnt clip on the attack stage the rest will be fine. Thank you for you video too only half way though tho.

    unless im getting you wrong why didnt you just save it as a song at the end instead of a project. because if it was just a beat then you can have i think about 30 beats or songs per 1 project unless im not hearing you right. all you do is click the red WRITE botton on the fantom and select song.

    • @JokerMansBeats
      @JokerMansBeats  8 років тому

      yeah you're probably right. I probably could have saved it as a song. but I believe I was thinking at that time, if I saved it as a project, then it would save all of my samples to that project folder. because I was having issues finding all of my samples and patches I saved to the Fantom G. but now thinking about it with you staying save it as a "song", It'd imagine it would save that "song" to that project folder. I will have to try that sometime.

      +JokerMansBeats yeh these machines have a big leaning curve. There so much to learn i almost wanted to sell it at one point because i thought it was crap but when i saw peoples demos online like SPACE MARTINI ROCKY MONTAGE and some other stuff he did with the fantom g i kept it. It was just me not digging into the manual. Also the effects are great and you can record automation to seperate midi tracks and you can further treak in a DAW. Im getting a King Korg next. Type into u tube ..rocky iv montage fantom g and he has the name space martini and look at the songs he,s made to see what the fantom can do.

    This ain't proper round robin. It ain't really "realistic" or "matural"...... In today's standards at least. Missing seperate velocity samples per note.
