  • The AH-1 Cobra/UH-1H Huey demonstration has become an icon in the Pacific Northwest having been exhibited at many regional aviation events. Meticulously restored to original condition and markings, this dynamic helicopter duo from the Olympic Flight Museum will demonstrate authentic maneuvers as they were utilized in military service, and are techniques all Army aviators must mast. Speeds and altitudes of these precision maneuvers range from zero miles per hour at ground level, to 140 miles per hour at 1,000 feet. This demonstration contributes to the public understanding of the role of Army aircraft by demonstrating proficiency and versatility in the performance of precision helicopter flight. You will see formation photo ops and solo demonstrations from these vintage warrior helicopters made famous by the Vietnam War.
    AH-1 Cobras were in use by the Army during the Tet offensive in 1968 and through to the end of the Vietnam War. Cobras provided fire support for ground forces, escorted transport helicopters, and other roles, including aerial rocket artillery (ARA) battalions in the two Airmobile divisions. They also formed "hunter-killer" teams by pairing with OH-6A scout helicopters. A team featured one OH-6 flying slow and low to find enemy forces. If the OH-6 drew fire, the Cobra could strike at the then revealed enemy. On 12 September 1968, Capt. Ronald Fogleman was flying an F-100 Super Sabre when the aircraft was shot down and he ejected 200 miles north of Bien Hoa. Fogleman became the only pilot to be rescued by holding on to an Army AH-1G's deployed gun-panel door. Bell built 1,116 AH-1Gs for the U.S. Army between 1967 and 1973, and the Cobras chalked up over a million operational hours in Vietnam; the number of Cobras in service peaked at 1,081. Out of nearly 1,110 AH-1s delivered from 1967 to 1973, approximately 300 were lost to combat and accidents during the war.

    What a show and what an excellent cameraman too! I'm sure the pilot of both machines inspired those kids! Fun fun!

    We should send these to Ukraine. The USA still has quite a few of the older Cobras in inventory, while the USMC upgrades to new Vipers. They are much easier to train on and maintain than most attack helicopters, difficult to shoot down, and are generally PERFECT for that environment.

    Odd it doesn't have the TSU for the Tow missiles. Yet it has the racks. The gun stow looks kinda high also. Still a sweet machine.

      Probably a mockup job after the "demilitarization" It looks like AH-1G (or late model -1G with tail rotor on right side) was upgraded to -1S Mod, 20mm cannon turret, flat window panes and TOW racks.. The AH-1F was the fully improved production/modernized model? Worth looking up! Any of the Bell Huey family of helicopters are really versatile, and the other Bell helicopters have also seen improvements and upgraded capabilities.. the AH-1Z is a MONSTER, as is the UH-1Y.. they BOTH have the equivilant power of a Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk now..DOUBLE the capability of their predecessors, which started with single 900shp engines!
      4 blade main rotor and twin engines seems the present..let's see where the future leads!

    why does the rotor look so slow

      Because it's only 2 fat blades and it is pretty slow. 324 RPM. A Bell 407 has 4 blades and 413 RPM so they'll look quite a bit faster.

      Watch the blades of a Chinook! Big fat.long things, each set of 3 are turning @ 180 RPM if I recall.., the hub you can track one blade as it goes round!
      *The wider blades give your eyes more time to see the blur pass, so less "lost" in the background with that "stronger signal" of greater duration!

      Because, its rotor blades are heavy, and are 12inches, or, a foot across!! Probably close to 28ft. In diameter. Rotor rpms on Huey helicopters are normally 315-325@ full throttle. It's basically a giant spinning wing!!
