  • Full post: www.linebacker-... :: Unranked Penn State hosted the No. 18 Minnesota Golden Gophers on a sun-splashed afternoon in 2005. The 4-0 Nittany Lions were coming off a shaky showing in its Big Ten opener, a 34-29 comeback win at Northwestern. The 4-0 Golden Gophers were nationally ranked, with a Heisman front runner in tailback Lawrence Maroney. Penn State went on to destroy Minnesota 44-14 on national television, and announce to all that the roar was restored to Happy Valley and the Blue and White.

I was a Freshman in 05... the Ohio State, Wisconsin, and this Minnesota game were three of the loudest games I ever remember at the Beav... It was just absolutely nuts.
The students took it too another level back then... not only did we have the entire section filled before each game... everyone was locked in the whole game. I feel like every play had this underlying feeling of "Let's Fu$%ing DO THIS!"

I was at this game. The thing I remember most was Michael Robinson absolutely destroying a Gopher DB as he was about go out of bounds (3:20 on the video.) One of the most vicious collisions I have ever seen live.

I was at home watching and the camera angel in live time was right there on the field! I was amazing that MR just stood up and walked away and scary that the MN DB did not.

That was so badass but I also cringe because that has concussion written all over it.

I was there in the student section. That DB tore his acl, mcl and pcl on that play. Terrible for him but Robinson was a beast

This season is still my favorite to date. I was like 11 years old but I still remember it clear as day. After the dark years we come out as usual and go 3-0 against easy teams. Then it looks like it'll be more of the same against Northwestern as we are losing most of the game, but we come from behind and steal one away. Then we go up against a good Minnesota team and just destroy them and that sets the stage for the huge game the next week against OSU. So good!

For me, 2005 and 2016 were two of the most magical seasons of Penn State Football to ever take place in my lifetime. Both of those years featured a rise back to prominence, but in different ways. The team struggled, had plenty of down years and called for JoePa's head before the '05 campaign, then, of course, they had that incredible season before going downhill again (with the exception of 2008 and 2009). Then they had the Sandusky situation and all of the issues and headaches from that, the sanctions, the loss of bowl eligibility, scholarships, etc. Nobody thought they'd recover until Bill O'Brien came in and then James Franklin, who was a question mark at first, but began making a name for himself in 2016. That season came out of nowhere. The 2-2 start, the come-from-behind overtime win against Minnesota, then the blocked field goal return touchdown against Ohio State and an unexpected Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth. From that moment on, they have had a decent, yet solid program. 2005 was a spectacular individual season while 2016 launched the beginning of a new era for PSU Football.

@gymman1031 That's very true, Glen Mason had a way of keeping it close with Penn State. He also had a way of scrounging out close wins. The talent levels from 2006 to 2007 weren't much different, but the 6-7 2006 Gophers won a lot of tight games. The most dramatic example of Glen Mason's coaching job came in a loss. Penn State finished 9-3 (would have been 11-1 or 10-2 if Enis and Jurevicius hadn't been suspended) but only beat Minnesota (3-8) 16-15 after being down 15-3.

By the way, do people here remember that the reason Minnesota was ranked 18th was from beating an overranked Purdue? In 2005, Purdue was a preseason dark horse to win the Big Ten and ranked pretty high going into the Minnesota game with everyone asking "Is Purdue for real?" (the answer turned out to be no, Purdue started off 2-0, lost six straight, their sixth being to Penn State, then finished a more respectable 5-6). After this game, people found out that it was Penn State that was for real.

Everyone said we couldn't win 5 games that year and Coach should be gone. We got our pay back with an 11-1 record

@gymman1031 Well that, plus injuries to Aaron Harris and a few other key players helped set the tone of the rest of the season. Penn State before the Minnesota game was a much different team than after in 1997. And with 1999, that safety Derek Fox is probably my least favorite Penn State player of all time.

@gymman1031 Well, 1998 was a whipping too, but 1998 and 2005 were about it. 1997 was a close game that foreshadowed Michigan knocking PSU out of the #1 spot. Glen Mason could probably turn Indiana into a middle of the pack team with occasional shots at the Rose Bowl for the first time since they had Lee Corso as coach. Currently, Kirk Ferentz is another coach whose Iowa teams have been a thorn in Penn State's side, even though PSU laid a whooping on Iowa in 1999 and 2007.
