    Arguably the best non-Motown Motown hit ever. The Revilot was a club in Buffalo, where Darrell grew up. This little label's other hit was "I Wanna Testify" by The Parliaments, led by a young George Clinton. Darrell also recorded down in Memphis- he was on Volt, Otis Redding's label. Had he lived, he might well have been right up there with Otis as a classic soul man. Come to think of it, they've probably sung together Upstairs for 50 years. RIP Darrell- from Detroit to Myrtle Beach and all the way to Manchester (not the one in NH), you left us with a song that will never die.

      The Revilot label recorded some notable other artists including Rose Batiste, J J Barnes, the Holidays and others. Some fine Northern Soul tunes to be found on Revilot. The label was owned by LeBaron Taylor aka Toliver. Obviously Revilot is a reverse spelling of his name. No idea if he owned a club too.

    • @kevinwhitmill2599
      @kevinwhitmill2599 3 місяці тому

      It's pure Northern Soul. Nothing else. We're not talking locations or styles of music within the USA. We're talking the Northern Soul scene, spawned in the UK, which has individual tunes from many genres of music under its broad umbrella.

      @@kevinwhitmill2599 There was a movie in the (I think early nineties) based on Northern Soul music and and group, forgot the name, but my buddy loved it. But, were the northern soul groups doing, recording Soul R&B type music before or around the same time as Motown or Stax? Don't quite know the history but will research it because I knew of it but just thought it was white groups/Bands from the UK who were really into Soul Music. But this Song by Darrell Banks was right up there with "Knock on Wood" when I was about 6 or 7 years old and I Really Loved both of those songs as a young child.. Thought this song was one of the Stax songs because it truly sounds like the Stax sound. Just watched the documentary on Stax Music Record Label... It's a Must see......

    • @kevinwhitmill2599
      @kevinwhitmill2599 3 місяці тому

      @aintnoway3467 You probably do if you're thinking within an American context. But....'Northern Soul' is a UK phenomenon. The term was coined by UK journalist and record store owner Dave Godin to differentiate between the type of Soul that was being played in London and the south (ie more Pop and/or Funk orientated) and that in demand by visiting 'Northerners' (including midlanders - anyone 80+ miles north of London basically), which was upbeat motownesque dance music, obscure and not pop chart type soul. This 'Northern Soul' encompassed music from Detroit, Chicago etc but also L.A., Memphis, Latin and TexMex style tunes. The geographical origin of the music had no bearing on it being accepted as Northern Soul within the UK (and now worldwide) context.

    • @kevinwhitmill2599
      @kevinwhitmill2599 3 місяці тому

      @thomford3386 There are no 'Northern Soul Groups' other than bogus ones trying to cash in. There are only Northern Soul tunes. Some artists and groups may only have one tune accepted as Northern Soul. Others might have the majority, even all, of their output deemed Northern Soul. Much of the Motown and Stax output, but not all, is deemed Northern Soul. The Isleys 'Tell Me It's Just A Rumour', Edwin Starr's 'Back Streets' and on Stax the Astors 'Twilight Time' being examples. There have also been some real non-soul oddities accepted under the banner of Northern Soul but I am too embarrassed to list them.
      You really need a love of the scene and it's music to understand really what it is.

It will bring joy to you heart and tears to your eyes at the same time. I am still a heavy metal fan always will be, but this like all soul music will haunt me forever as well. Listening to this makes me feel like a teen again, smile like I am insane and cry like I am a baby all with in its short duration, nothing gets close to creating that sort of roller coaster ride in music these says, sad to say mundane rubbish for the best part is modern music. Dave Hossack I will. So lucky to have all these records on UA-cam now that were so hard to find back in the day. I salute Ian Levine and every DJ that worked hard to uncover all these great songs.

    I'm 74 now but this tune still brings back so many memories of 60's all nighters at Pete Stringfellows King Mojo in Sheffield and all nighters in Nottingham, those days of pure soul music are long gone but always with me, feel sorry the youngsters now with all the crap so called music.

    Supreme vocals by Darrell Banks... a definite allnighter floor filler, incidental breaks in this and the chorus, really make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck

    The INTRO to this jam is what I remember and jocks used it on commercials as a bed on WWRL AM 1600, NYC and WNJR AM back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. And of course, the baritone sax is kickin ass and takin names throughout.

      My other reply disappeared. But this was a great era. The struggle(s) was/were real also back in the day but Our music was so great that it eased a little of the pain & injustices!
