  • Our cameraman loves shooting on Cobalt boats because they handle so smoothly and corner like they're on rails. This bow rider is extra special according to Steve and he walks us through the features and the fun of cruising around in it.

Great review! Fully agree with a comment below on Mercury engines. As well, DTS throttle in their case behaves better than on Volvo. A captain's call is also a nice feature. I have my 222 with 496 MAG (425hp) and non-cat exhaust, it sounds like a beast !

why is this boat so slow? with that engine option it should be much faster. My buddy has a 02' that does 57mph in Lake Tahoe.

      Cobalts are heavy.

It must have the forward drive on it...or was tested at high altitude.

Pretty slow top speed with that power package. You’d be better off with the 8.2 liter Mag HO.

Bob Eddy My 2012 Cobalt 232 is 1 ft longer. With the 300hp Mercruiser 350Mag it tops out at 50-51mph. I could have spent another $25k for the 8.2 Mag HO and it would’ve gone 61. No thanks! The 6.2 at the time had the same top speed too!

@@djcordes4352 I agree. My 2019 R3 with a VP350 does about 54 mph. I could have optioned the 430 for another $23,000 and been able to hit 61 mph, but I didn't see the value in it. Most dealers must agree because the maximum hp in stock boat I've seen is 380HP and most are 300 or 350.

I test drove a 2019 R3 300 HP engine with 7 adults and hit 49 easy.. damn nice boat!

@@Auburn23Tigers - I really like the savings and performance of the 300 VP - gets you a free trailer and buys a lot of fuel. With the bimini arch up and two people on board and half tank of gas, I get some airfoil "lift" off of the water making less hull contact and weight on the water surface - 52 MPH. The 300 is and has detuned output - other than that, both engines are identical. A V6 would underpower this boat.
