The decline in original Lego themes really saddens me. I grew up in the early 2000s and still got to experience some of the most interesting and creative original themes. Knights Kingdom, Mars Mission, Aquaraiders II. Basically everything has been replaced by licenced themes at this point. I understand it makes more money to focus on themes that either are tied to a TV show like Ninjago or Monkey Kid, or the always popular licensed themes, but a part of Lego's dna has always been the creatively designed and storied Lego original themes.

It's weird how almost everything in the LEGO catalog has been consolidated into a handful of original, "evergreen" themes in recent years. In the last two years, Monkie Kid has been the ONLY new narrative-driven theme that isn't based on existing intellectual property, and it is primarily being marketed to the Chinese audience. Pretty much everything has been slotted into a Ninjago or City subtheme, with Creator being a grab bag for whatever is left. I don't mind any of these things in a vacuum, but it's made things predictable for better or worse.

I wish they would take the classic 90s factions with the blocky designs, of course add a story about the space police and Blacktron and the civilians. Make a Netflix series about the civilian factions being stuck between the battle between the space police and Blacktron.

I would argue that the downfall of Lego Space wasn’t Star Wars, as those co-existed for awhile. It was a combination of Super-heroes licenses, and more than anything, the loss of shelf space with the fall of Toys-R-Us.

My theme was Legoland Town and I kinda feel the same, yes there's plenty of police, fire and big city centre sets, but no houses, no post office, etc. I think the reason why Lego is frightened to launch new space sets, is that in the 1990s there were so many different sub-themes in space, which only lasted a few years and cost so much to design and produce, it was part of the reason why Lego can so near to collapse at the turn of the century. That said, looking back at my Lego catalogues from the early 1980s, I don't see why the company can't launch a small range of sets based on going back the early, classic days.

    • @hakanstorsater5090

There was a lot of design aestethics overlap in the - as I call it - "Tron era" 1987-1996, though, and besides the two Monorail sets, there are few sets that look particularly expensive to design or produce, compared to the Classic Space sets. Lego has moved away from small magnets, similar to the ones in M-Tron in later years due to health risks, but I don't think they were that difficult and expensive to produce, themselves, at the time.
There were other reasons than the Space sub-themes that led the company to the brink.

Lego has evolved in good and bad ways. And losing our beloved original themes to licensed ones are one of the really bad ones, we now only have Lego City (which I think evolved from Lego Town) Lego friends who no one really cares about, and Lego Creator. But Classic Space is trying to fight back with Lego recently releasing the galaxy explorer in honor of Lego’s 90 year anniversary. So we can be seeing original themes again soon, if Lego thinks outside the box.

I actually don't think that Galaxy Explorer is a return of classic Space, as much as that new huge castlle is not a return of classic Castle. They both are just one-time gifts for old fans.
I will be glad to be wrong.

  • @combat-greyhound565

most classic lego themes are dying. Lego aims only for licence products and replace the classic themes and sets. Thats why we have no castles, pirates (outside of 1 ideas and 1 creator set), no western or why the last technic wave was a bad racers wave.
I love Lego Star Wars (more the older sets but thats an other topic) and also they are a lot of good other licence series. But its still a shame that classic themes got replaced by them or when they are bad like trolls..
between 2005 and 2012 lego did it the right way in my opinion. They had both, classic themes and great licence products.

I remember doing some small research and found out that Alien Conquest was meant to have a second wave which would focus the ADU retaliating against the aliens and invading their home planets, which something similar happens in Galaxy Squad.
Pharaoh's Quest, Atlantis and Dino 2012 are also connected to Alien Conquest, in comics it was shown that The Alien Commander built the pyramids for Amset-Ra and gave technology to the Atlantis creatures, Dino 2012 happens after the ADU make the aliens retreat from Earth, in which the Alien Commander decides to open up a portal with Dinosaurs to storm a City.
Monster Fighters is also tied to Galaxy Squad as in a comic too it's shown that the moonstones fire some sort of beacon beam into space which catches the attention of the Alien Bugs, initiating the events of GS.

Star Wars is too popular for there to be “room” for traditional space sets. I grew up with the 90s themes of pirates, castle, town, and space. Pirates and castle were my favorite but space was awesome too. The allure of licensed legos is too strong nowadays and it’s probably the easiest and smartest way for them to keep selling sets.

LEGO enjoys trend-chasing as much as any other company, but I think there might be a little more to it. Things like LEGO City's real-world career subthemes such as the Deep Sea Explorers and Space Port lines are specifically meant to inspire kids to be curious about science and the natural world. From what I've observed from LEGO designers, they seem to put a special emphasis of what will inspire kids to pursue education and STEM-related fields with their various products. I think a little bit of the magic of the more colorful LEGO Space lines was lost in the process, which is a tremendous shame.

@@Professor_Godt , I think that the person that has been leading LEGO since 2004, as well as the newer corporate heads, have, in fact, made LEGO WORSE in a lot of ways instead of making it better. Honestly, LEGO is essentially like the 1980s Jordache of the modern toy world. Do not get me wrong, I do not hate LEGO media, but, in all honesty, it has been peddling bad ideas, as well as bad ideologies, even more so than the person that had founded LEGO. I thought that LEGO was supposed to be all about imagination rather than agenda peddling.

I print out the parts list, go through what I already own for as much as I can find, then order the remainder. In this way I'm slowly but surely moving towards a complete collection. People need to promote better ideas for LEGO themes. I think that the last one that happened was actually the Star Sheriffs and the Space Skulls. Had people had more of a follow through with that idea, then I think that LEGO would have scratched that Space itch.

After Exploriens they should have gone back to some of the earlier themes like Futuron and Blacktron and released new sets and waves for them. UFO and Insectoids didn't fit the shared universe of the Lego space factions. I really like all the factions from Classic Space to Exploriens. Being a kid in the early 90s it was great with so many space factions and I still collect them and make MOCs for those factions. I really miss 80s and 90s space and still remember the disappointment when Star Wars replaced in house space factions.

And yet the Micro Galaxy Explorer is in high demand with people doing Pick a brick to make doubles now it's out of Print, Bennies Space Squad and the Build & Fix Garage get reprints every couple of years, the 90th anniversary vote saw Classic Space so popular it would have won if they didn't fold all the Castle Factions in together and we are still getting a update of the Galaxy Explorer later this year.
I've got pre-teen and tween nephews and nieces who cant take their eyes off my Classic Space sets and went wild when I got them the Benne sets. I think they could redo classic space but it would cut in to the release cycle and hurt other (Licensed) themes they have invested too much in to.

It's sad that there are no recent Lego space themes. But I think space lives on in the hearts of fans. When I was a kid, my favorite thing to build was spaceships. I never got any Mars Mission sets or Alien Conquest, but my interest in those themes and space in general always had me building multi-colored starships.

I think that the biggest problem with the original Space was lack of time invested. After the original launch lines, Lego never expanded on ANY of the sub themes. Especially after they killed off MTron. I originally had 4 of the main Space Police II sets (the Galactic Mediator I got in my 20s), pretty much all of the Ice Planet sets (except the Ice Sat V), Space Station Zenon (Unitron), the 2 smallest Spyrius sets (the small craft and the Saucer Centurion) along with the Robo Guardian, the Robo Raptor, the 3 smallest Exploriens sets, and the V Wing fighter was the last original Space System set I got (came bundled with a couple others in the lap table pack) after the 2 smallest Insectoids.
The problem? All of these sub themes were released within roughly 8 years. They never expanded on any of them. Like they do now with the themeless City sets, releasing a handful of new ones every year. Of course, they still pull the same crap with the themed City sets... Jungle, Arctic, Volcano, this year is Animal Rescue. They'll all be gone next year (still trying to get a chance on a Jungle Heavy Lift Helo at a good price to finish the collection). Of course people are going to be bored with the sets after the first year or so... they want new and different. They can't make money on a theme they don't continue to refresh or innovate in.

Lego is dying a slow death in a way. They keep getting closer & closer to MPC models. More folks are using flat pieces over every lego nodule. That’s not how this works. Lego wanted to differentiate between MPC in the beginning. Now they are becoming MPC.

The new parts are not the problem, the problem, or should I say problems, are greed, the refusal to make classic LEGO parts, the refusal to make classic LEGO colors, the promotion of agenda peddling idiocy, the lack of advertising for good original themes, and lack of proper follow through for those original themes.

Seems like now there aren’t anymore “waves” of specific themes. It’s all one offs here and there. Like the ICONS theme has the huge castle set yet also the galaxy explorer. I’m for no more runs and more cool one offs of certain themes if they continue to do really cool stuff with it. I own the galaxy explorer. I think the set is truly awesome. Beds and cargo area in the back, a cockpit with 4 seats, classic space logos, the set is absolutely amazing. The castle looks awesome too. The Viking boat looks pretty cool. I think more one offs, not waves, of other sets to contend with these new ones they have, like an enemy Viking boat or another huge castle with different figures and logos to oppose the new castle would be the smartest next move.

Then came the space Blacktron, Classic and Ice Planet, in a few following years...several smaller sets in between, including some racers and police from City as well as some smaller from the Castle, including that with the glowing ghost. Finally, Maybe at around 10 I got Merlin's Fire Breathing Fortress. Eh, memories...

I wouldn't say that LEGO Space is outright dead, it just doesn't have a place in LEGO's lineup now or, sadly, for the foreseeable future. One thing I've noticed that LEGO doesn't like to do is have their original themes compete with licensed themes when the franchise attached to the licensed theme is active. It's pretty obvious that this is what they're doing if you take a look at the release years of various original and licensed themes.
For Space, we had pretty much a constant run until Star Wars, ending with Life on Mars. Star Wars pretty much took over from 2001 to 2007, which is the timeframe where the three Star Wars prequel themes were released. In 2007, two years after Revenge of the Sith, LEGO started producing their own space themes again, starting with Mars Mission and ending with Galaxy Squad in 2013. Sure, Galaxy Squad and the theme before it, Alien Conquest, weren't exactly best-sellers, but that's never caused LEGO to kill off an entire overarching theme before. But after 2013, we had something significant happen for LEGO Star Wars - the release of The Force Awakens in 2015, which renewed the general public's interest in Star Wars.
Now, you might say "but why isn't space back now that the new trilogy has ended? That has to mean that LEGO just isn't interested in Space anymore! Star Wars killed LEGO Space!". Here's the thing - the new trilogy might be over, but Disney has consistently been releasing new Star Wars content since then in the form of secondary movies, streaming TV shows and cinematic miniseries. It's not like the ten-year gap between the prequels and sequels where the only major media release for Star Wars was the Clone Wars TV show. Should Disney decide to take a break from shoveling out Star Wars content, then maybe we'll see a new space theme. But right now, even if LEGO was dead-set on releasing a new Space theme, it wouldn't be a good business decision since it would end up being in direct competition - and completely overshadowed by - LEGO Star Wars.

As much as I love Lego space I hope it remains dead. The older Lego space themes will always hold a very special place in my heart and my collection and they have a certain charm compared to other themes. Lego space feels like a bittersweet callback to a different time and this makes the occasional d2c or promo so much more memorable. As someone who was mostly around during the for the time of more story oriented Lego themes, Lego spaces general lack of direction in that sense made it so much more special. Me and my friends were able to build up our own world for our old stop motion series from the space sets, because of its lack of story, and it moved our imagination quite differently to Lego sets from more recently.

One i made to look like a stingray alien with a saddle and added tech, like the blacktron team is taking aliens and adding on machines to turn them into half ship half creature hybrids for space travel, And some white astronauts to free them, It's a nice little thing of my own imagination!

All those newer licensed sets are a result of risk management, as the themes are already established for Lego. The downside of this development is that it limits the creative potential of a Lego set to movie merchandise. Unique themes such as Space Police or Blacktron were free of that limitation, albeit riskier for Lego.

It’s been that long since the last LEGO Space theme? Wow, it weirdly feels like yesterday since I got my first Space Police sets in the 2000s.
I weirdly couldn’t get into the older Space sets due to me being a 2000s kid. But after seeing Benny in The LEGO Movie and his Classic Space related sets it really started to grow on me.
Also I’ve heard a Ultra Agents character appears in a Galaxy Squad set too. So I guess there’s another Space connection with that line.
Hope LEGO does their own new Space themes sometime soon.

LEGO Space was the first time, when I was a little kid, where the first spark of imagination in my mind was truly lit, where simple plastic bricks could take me into a futuristic world of science fiction. I remember the first set that my parents got me, it was the 6880 Surface explorer, unique since it had the claws. From that moment they could tell I loved them and as a kid I got lots more sets, almost exclusively the Space themes which I loved. To me as a kid LEGO was all about the space sets, I never thought that the other theme sets were remotely interesting. It was really during the era of Space Police and the first generation of Blacktron that I slowly grew out of it. Eventually all my sets went into a box to my cousin. Honestly have no idea what happened to them after that.
But LEGO sparked my love of creation, and games like Minecraft, and especially Space Engineers certainly fed the same type of creative outlet. Guarenteed, that anyone who plays Space Engineers, no doubt also played with LEGO in their youth.

@@timewarpdrive77 you know lego racers also has all of those things and dependent on how you see it lego city also has the actual gimmick of the line, the same setting closer human astronauts closer themes
And like racers and technich also technically feature all of these these things
And also the pyromatics appeared in one set so like having a single play feature in common with another line the existence of aliens and the setting makes you a remake? Like you know, than alien conquest is a remake of Arctic, I guess and space police three is a remake of rock raiders, which itself is a remake of exploriance which it self is a remake of m-tron
Actually all classic space themes are remakes because they share a feature, modularity and co-exist with black-tron which canonically includes aliens and are all set on rock planets
