Talking Mongoose That Made the News

An actual item of historical record, reports of a supernatural talking mongoose were taken very seriously by the press in the 1930s and 40s. In the early 1930s, on the Isle of Man, a family of farmers made the stunning acquaintance of a talking mongoose, named Gef. Among other things, he reportedly told the family he was "an extra, extra clever mongoose" and that he could shapeshift. The bizarre stories were considered credible enough to make the papers and attracted the attention of famous investigators.
