Best part is the French commentators keep saying, basically, "no way, not gonna happen, too late etc." until she actually wins!

Evelyn Ashford. Something so mature and/or classic about her. Sophisticated style. Humble and underrated. I loved watching her run. Overshadowed by bigger names but what a runner.

I remember watching that incredible Evelyn Ashford final leg. One of my favorite memories from track.
I was 15yrs old during the 1984 Summer Olympics. I was biting my nails and screaming like I had lost my mind. I, for some stupid reason thought the louder I screamed, the faster she would run. That theory as unrealistic as it was, miraculously worked in thar race. I'll fondly remember that summer AND THAT RACE FOR THE R3ST OF MY LIFE!!!!!
I've been impressed in certain sport events, And Im still rejoicing with their surprise victory , One is Billy Mills in 1964 Tokio olympics and Evelyn Ashford in 1988 Seul South Korea, They developed such power in the end that amazed many and made the crowd shake the sits at the stadium . What a joy . God bless U.S.A.

Ah, Miss Ashford..I remember that race; notice how she crosses the line first, kept to herself, no celebration, politely handed the baton to the official, and was nonchalant all the way through. Class. But to have a list like this and not have Dave Wottle's comeback in 800 at '72 Olympics is a travesty. The dude was last (as far back as 20 yards) from beginning until he made a move with 300 meters to go//

He didn’t make a move. Everyone else just slowed down. It was a famously even paced race.
Also Borzakovskiy 800 m win in 2004 Olympics.

Great comebacks but it seems the world has forgotten the Finnish athlete Lasse Virén and his race in the 1972 olympics, 10000m: He fell half way through the race, got up having lost 50 m to the leaders but still caught up with them and won - setting a new world record!

He is Virén, not Wirén. Earth's most famous truck driver. I did born 1970, so I did skip 1972 competition.

Lasse Virén 1972 5000m. I was named after him because of the run.
I remember in the 1976 Olympics in the marathon Frank Shorter feared him the most.
Michael Franks' marvellous comeback was the best for me. Got to see the race in full to really appreciate the effort he put in. I recall watching that live and the sheer thrill of it. He did get a little help as Innocent Edbunike (Nigeria) who was leading with just 5 metres to go turned momentarily to see Franks coming up to his shoulder. It caused him to lose a little momentum and Franks just nudged ahead.

The lady who tripped into the water, had a blessing in disguise. LoL. The water would have refreshed her body a bit...giving her a cool state of mind taking in the breeze to make the situation better...

(Of course my favourite Olympic moments are the 2000 Mens Freestyle relay, and Cate Campbell's final leg in the 2020/1 Medley relay). But again, this finish by Everlyn is superb. Love it.
The Juantorena comeback in a 4x400 and the Wottle comeback are, by far, the most ridiculous ones ever. Can't believe those were not included.

Have to add to these the two sensational battles between Colette Besson and Lilian Board in the late sixties. Besson came from far behind to snatch a last-gasp 400m gold at the Mexico Olympics, while Board reeled in a seemingly impossible deficit to take the 4x400m title for Britain the following year at the European champs.

Watched Evelyn Ashford, Flo Jo, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Carl Lewis during’88 Olympics in Seoul, was stationed there at Camp Essayons in Uijongbu.
And was a newly wed, brought my wife back from the states during my leave (married during leave). Even though it was non command sponsored (government wouldn’t provide travel expenses nor quarters etc..
Was a good time in my life, and still married to the same great wife of 34 years now (May 20th 1988)

The first one and the last one are off the chart unreal because of the limited overall distance and the deficit at the start. In fact, the first one is just not human. Mike Franks had wings that day.
Come from behind wins are always exciting. Horse-wise, it’s kind of like when Mine That Bird won the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
At 1:55 they show Paul Chelimo beginning his strong come from behind kick, but his comeback falls just short of Joshua Cheptegei at the finish line.
That Evelyn Ashford win is even more spectacular when you consider that this was during the time that the East German women's team were so hopped up on PED's that they had to wear athletic supporters.
4x100m women of 1998 European Championships in Budapest is missing. The most unbelievable come back I have ever seen in sprint.
