Alan is the envy of other lifeboats, he actually get to sail around
Grateful for the longer visit. Alan is coming along nicely and is quite the “technological sleeper”. You can’t judge a lifeboat by it’s cover.
Excellent video, "Alan on the Move" is great entertainment, thanks, Alex.
I love the animation showing the different ports of call.
Snazzy eh!
I really was waiting for you to contact the ports via radio with: This is MV: ALAN, ALAN, ALAN, over.
I do at the start..... just edits included. Will improve on that!
I've spent years dealing with Humber VTS while shuttling in and out to Bull Sand Fort. They are always courteous and helpful. I spent a pleasant night with HCA when I couldn't get my boat into the commercial docks.
Efficient and helpful indeed. Still, chattier than I expected for a large VTS!
Already looking forward to the next leg or thigh. Alan is doing a sterling job. 😊
When towing Alanson you should fasten the rope to the back two rubber cleats in to a V shape and loose through the front one. This will reduce to pull on the first rubber cleat and make it last longer. It also means if one side comes off you still have the other.
I love Wells. Used to holiday there in my youth
Loving these travel vlogs of Alans journey and look forward to seeing him on Marine Traffic. 😎
Cheers
I actually like sea going better that the build.... how very unexpected! 👍👍👍👍
Have you ever thought about a small sail for Allen? I know a Latine sail comes with minimal rigging but might help Allen when traveling down wind, you may even be able to go engine off in some situations and maintain your 4 knot pace
Alan may not be built for speed, or comfort for that matter, but he is most certainly the greatest exploration vessel to have ever sailed the high seas
I'm so happy for you to have made it across the wash! And glad you made it through fish docks lock. Humber VTS and Humber coastguard are the most professional of the two organisations I've had the pleasure of dealing with. Finally now you're on to robin hood's bay, flamborough head, Scarborough. Have fun! 😁 Keep your eyes skywards for all of the offshore energy helicopter traffic commuting over Grimsby, CHC and unifly. Also the coastguard trains their heli crew almost daily at flamborough head
Will do! Cheers
Keep sailing, Alan is funny, thanks for sharing 🎉
Cheers
You are doing really well.👍 An autopilot system is really not a luxury when you are shorthanded.😉👍
Tempted to agree.
Thank you so very much for your journey.
What an excellent video this week Alex.🎉❤🤙🖖
How generous. Thank you.
Nice bit of Nostalgie de la boue for me. Yes, the coastline is a bit bland , but nonetheless a welcome sight after a twelve day trawling trip. Bow thruster ? Pah, who needs one ? Marvellous.
Alan the champion of life boats continues on
The Big Orange Clog is actually doing it!
Ahh…brilliant, always look forward to an Alan update, especially on a wet and windy Saturday evening 👍🇮🇲👌
Brilliant episode
Cheers
To do tight turns in the boat port or starboard you nee to put the wheel hard over and rev up short burst and back this will get the boat to turn in tight turns especially in small spaces. Hope you but some sand ballast in the stern this will but the prop and rudder further down in the water to enable the boat get better Traction for rudder and prop runs.
Yes new video!
Bravo Alex 👍
More Sea Legs for Alan 👌👌😁😁
Ahh alan a work of art
Nice work guys 👍
Cheers
That curled edge of the solar panel is wreaking havoc with my OCD. Is there anyway to lay it flat?
To force it into the 3D curve shape of the hull, it would break the panel.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals That makes sense. Is it sealed to keep water, salt and other nastiness from getting trapped behind it?
I’m a Wells! I want to dock there. #LifeGoals
Your commentary really makes these videos a must watch, but one positive suggestion. To differentiate the 1st partial leg from the 2nd partial leg... The lower one could be called the calf (or shin) and the upper one could be called the thigh. Assuming of course that hopefully no one who rejects the traditional North/South convention will be offended by such presumptions.
Cheers
Perhaps a good Go Kart seat would suit your seating upgrade. Wouldn't take up much space, built solid (for obvious reasons) and compact!
Hey - just a tip for recording audio from VHF. You’re wearing over-ear headphones, so if you’re able to plug normal in ear headphones into your cameras 3.5mm mic Jack, the in ear headphones serve as little mics. Used to do this for flying light aircraft and it works brilliantly. The old wired apple headphones without inline mics work particularly well. Obviously you could split the signal etc, but this solution completely avoids buggering about with editing wires.
A film-making luxury I'll consider!
I've had and liked those cup holders. I can paddle 4 knots and in most motor boats I've had, I've preferred 5 knots. Maybe a life boat is for me? How much does she draw?
Have you ever thought of putting on double bildge keels so if you end up on a sand bank at low tide. Alan stands upright and upright without bricks or jacks on land. Also more stable at sea
Certainly have!
9:32 I love it 😂
Hopefully if you going to Grimsby it would be great to see you come to hull marina
Sadly a bit of a dogleg in the wrong direction. Scarborough and Newcastle next.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals when you in Scarborough would love to meet up and share a 🍻 I'm only down the road from scarbrough
I'll update the community page
"Chased and mauled by seals"
Come to Cape Cod and give the Great Whites a chance!
I wonder if you will be able to meet with Harry Dwyer along the way.
I prefer.more traditional boats and im not totally sold on a catamaran although I see some advantages. That said, a second lifeboat attached with beams at the gunnels would open up possibilities for cutting fiberglass and making a lifeboat more friendly to outdoor activities usually associated with pleasure boats. Maybe you can find a twin to link up. Twin Engines would help your manuverability issues while adding an entire other set to consider.
Nice video. However, I'm just completely shocked to see that dock line sitting on the stern counter just waiting to go overboard and tangle in the prop. At the very least, I would lead it below through the companionway.
Just seconds later you see me coiling the lines inside.
Please, add a ladder in case you fall into water! You should not postpone it anymore.
We have a rope ladder close at hand.
Are you still there? Can't find the AIS at Grimsby...😕
A great episode Alex. If I might make a suggestion, in your VHF communications, it would be less confusing (and more professional to recipients) if you referred to Alan as Motor Vessel Alan.
I do at the start, but only included parts in the edit.
good luck from germany
Cheers
I cannot see whether or not you do in your mirrored sunglasses, but I sincerely hope your camera has a wrist strap on it! Great vid as always.
3:13 the polypropylene mooring line isnt secure on the deck, it should be tied off properly in case wind or wave knocks the rope into the water causing it to jam in the propeller when you try to turn or reverse in the dock
Moments later you see it coiled inside.
the camera flicks back to the rope on the deck again
If you want to think I leave loose ropes on the decks whilst at sea, you are very welcome to think so.
How many people will Alan be able to support on an expedition?
12:43 have we seen this control box? I like it.
I've glossed over it a few times I guess. It's the old dashboard panel screwed into an electrics junction box. I did it back in 2020 so the panel can be moved around.
@@AlexHibbertOriginalsInteresting, I'll have to re watch some of the older stuff. As I said I think it's a great idea, and seems very well designed.
I am curious why you don't have any anti-fowling paint on the boat, but going forward for type of trip you are doing an echosounder is a must and a radar almost as necessary, the first time to get caught out in low to zero visibility you will know what I mean.
It was decided based on copper environment laws, durability, cost, and maintenance schedule. Tough epoxy won, for now.
Echo sounder - I'm literally mid-research....
😎🤙
Have you tested your coax cable connectors? On my 2m radio in my truck I had a bad PL-259 that had a cold solder joint. It gave me such a problem trying to tune my antenna to get my SWR down to a reasonable level. I finally noticed it when I was watching the meter as I bumped the cable and saw the SWR's jump. Pulling the shielding on the connector showed that it had a cold solder joint which was allowing the center conductor to move.
Yes this one is ok - the portable antenna with factory made connector wasn't' helping either. But, await the next episode....
@@AlexHibbertOriginals 👍
Do you have any plans to replace the iPad used for navigation or at least waterproof it?
No not really. It's not a wet area of the boat. In an emergency the same app is carried on waterproof iPhones.
Hi.. i got some questions, and I am hopeful you can give me some information before I go any further in my search for a LifeBoat.
1. How would the stock engie set up work for daily coastal cruising and traveling... that's if I added a engine cover with ventalation duct work and fans to keep thhe air moving inside the engine housing?
2 can a small deck be mounted under the pilot seat for your feet and help catch lityle things the might fall from you pockets as to prevent things getting lost in the bilges?
3 how much fuel capacity should I have if I plan to run the engine 72 hours.. that's like an emergency maximum long day, and I would not plan to do that long between topping off the tank.. and my a rpms would be about 75 percent throttle.. like say I had to ride out a storm?
4 my plan is basically going to be build a house boat or I guess on yalls side of the pond it would be something like a narrow boat.
5 Did the stock engine set up have dry stack exhaust? I worked on commercail trawlers, and my trust in having everything simple has never mislead me and that's how I want the engine and the systems to be as simple and as possible sa o as to make repairs as easy and quickly as possible while under way.
I finally might have narrowed down my search to a couple of boats similar to Alan, and fairly close to me. It would be slightly over my budget, but I might could make it happen with extending my launching and deperting date by as much as a year.
While ocean crossing is definitely not an option, Bahamas is an over night sail away, possibly even less with a piwer boat, and Bermuda is 700 miles off shore from here, and is often done by small sailing craft from my home port. A boat left my slip last year that was 24' and did the trip to Bermuda, and had a rigging failure, but did not lise the mast but rather a jury rigged for stay and shortned sail, and motor sailed 3 days with a crew of two 20 yr olds with absolutely no coastal sailing experience, much less any off shore experience. They both claim it should be doable with a houseboat converted life boat. Lol.
If I do go with the life boat. I olane on stealing a couple of your ideas, like removing the air tanks and stock fire suppression system and go with a fire extinguisher and engine room remote fire extinguisher system that can be set off without opening up the engine compartment.
Would be grateful for any thoughts on useing the stock engine set up for coastal cruising.
How hard would it be to give Alan a auto pilot , that would give you more time for other things. Good job greetings from Panamá.
Not that hard - just a budget issue at present.
Those battery cables are dangerously close to the fly wheel, please re-secure elsewhere: 7:00
They are the semi-rigid control lines for the steering and throttle, and can't move more than a few mm. They are in the factory mounted position.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Thank you for the reply! Good to know and a bit interesting they happen to look just like battery cables.
How noisy is it inside Alan? Are ear defenders gong to be required?
Once I have all the sound reducer panels on, pretty decent. Certainly not need for ear defenders, unless the genset is on!
What was the fix for the radio ?
A couple of replaced connectors.
What navigation app are you using on the ipad ?
iSailor
@AlexHibbertOriginals
Brilliant thanks, 👏 looking forward to next video
Perhaps Alan needs an upgraded pro/impeller, maybe a auto-feathering/adjustable pitch one so at higher RPM you can actually move faster
efficiency = a win
Seven knots is roughly the max hull speed, so I don't think there's much more.
How do you plan for fuel?
I can carry nearly 500 litres, so no need to plan too carefully at this stage.

Lolz. Don't exceed 5 knots lads. Keep the wash low 🙃🥸
If only Alan found it that easy to speed.
Designed and built in South Africa.. funny way to say where one is from
You must be new to the channel!
@AlexHibbertOriginals nope I been watching along time just a comment that made me smile . Kinda like when people here say they were made in America. Goodluck on your journey
15:12 where do i get these sun gllasses 😅
They are super-cheap Amazon ones! I didn't want to worry about them.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals thank you i found them😊

Grimsby is also the name of a film, i think the only time Sacha Baron Cohen fights Scott Adkins
It's not a kind film...
@@AlexHibbertOriginalstrue, the film is a dark comedy - the town can't be worse than Reading or Slough (voted worst places to live)
I’m shocked you STILL don’t have a flag. Every serious boat has a flag.
I did, but it just flapped around, faded and got in the way. I have a little one next to the SSR number.
A cheaply done homemade auto pilot wouldnt be hard to do. Obviously not something to leave for hours unattended. But for 30 minutes to perform random tasks would be good.
Ref your radio reception issues. Nothing to do with all that aluminium insulation, is it?
Makes a very good Faraday cage……..🤔
The antennas are well clear, so I doubt it.
You should consider multiple painters on AlinSon. You will lose him.
Alternative revenue idea - load Alan (and his son) with Vikings and raid the east coast of England. I hear the church is quite well off. Though, compact Vikings for Alanson may be difficult to find.
We shall pass Lindisfarne....
