I love your new (ish) return on investment section. It is by far my favorite new section and find it extremely interesting and put things into perspective
I knew Across the Spider-Verse was going to be big when I couldn't find good tickets for opening weekend at any of my local theaters. It is the first movie in a long time where that has actually happened. That said, I skipped Super Mario, but I pretty much have seen every large blockbuster on opening weekend for some time.
If you want to see a good, old-school crime beat-em-up action movie, The Roundup is worth checking out. Ma Dong Seok aka Don Lee deserves to be an international star. Pity that Eternals misused such a charismatic, badass actor
Little Mermaid was green lit well before Covid right? So the cost over runs must have been staggering. Is there any information on what the pre pandemic budget estimate was? Probably closer to 200m maybe??
Definitely. It started to shoot before the COVID shutdown and had to be shut down and finished under the more expensive pandemic shooting conditions. Thor Love & Thunder also faced the same problems. I think ~$50M was added to the budgets of both movies due to these issues
LM is doing about as well as Aladdin in the domestic market. And about the same(some a bit worse) in LATAM, Europe and Oceania and parts of Asia.(keep in mind that Aladdin had amazing holds. So LM is holding very well so far) Problem is that SK and China rejected the movie and those 2 were the biggest markets for that movie. Let's see where Japan falls next week.(Aladdin 112M, but with todays Exchange rates that would already be a lot less Dollars) And sure 250M is too much, but the movie was shut down by COVID (+ the onset Measures after filming started again) and is 40% under water(which is 99% CGI). So I'm guessing the original budget was ~200M, which is pretty standard considering the amount of CGI required.
I don't think Disney cares about "the Little Mermaid" doing well in theaters. The movie has the number 1 selling doll right now, they're gonna make bank off toys sales even if the movie only breaks even
I will be adding to Across the Spider-verse because I will go see it again because of my theater experience. To preface I went to a 5:45 showing on Friday night. I chose this time because I knew about the films run time at a quite long 2 hours and 20 minutes. When you take into account trailers and most people getting there around 5:30 or earlier, you’re looking at a trip over 3 hours long. That’s a long time for any movie and it’s particularly long for an animated film. This film takes a while to get going plot wise, which is absolutely not a negative, it’s actually great because you get some great character moments, and when the plot gets going over an hour in, it is complex with a lot of exposition. So with all that in mind, DO NOT BRING KIDS TO THIS MOVIE. The children in my theater were so loud, distracting, and bored. About 45 minutes to an hour in they were bored, screaming during the QUIETEST moments to a point other people were verbally either amused or frustrated. I heard a kid behind me say “I don’t want to be here anymore” about an hour and a half into the film. Any kid younger than 12 or 13 will not enjoy this, it’s not a kids movie. Kids can watch it, but they will be bored for more than half of the film, which is over an hour of the film. I really wished they made this PG-13, just to dissuade parents from bringing young children. I have to go rewatch this because it was the worst theater experience I’ve ever had. I don’t think I laughed more than twice because I was so distracted, also, parents need to take kids out of theaters if they start making noises consistently and are a distraction to the WHOLE auditorium.
Super happy for Spiderverse, I have to admit, I was one of the skeptical people who really assumed this one was going to do fine but...........not this AMAZING, I assume was gonna perform similar to Puss in Boots the Last Wish that did very good specially counting the budget of just 90 millions......but little I would know Across the Spiderverse is on another level, so for that alone, super happy, ANIMATION is demolishing everyone this year, if this movie keep this pace, we could talk about another potential 1 billion film and I'm all forward this is the case for Spiderverse.......I already seen the film TWICE (have to go back to watch it Saturday....thinking maybeeee will go for a third XD). Super Mario and Spiderverse give me a lot of hope that we will see a lot more animated features been taking a lot more serious moving forward..............not sure why you keep rooting for the little mermaid remake, that film is bombing hard and I not think will do much better than this once Transformers is out this week, and I can't be happier than adjusted for inflation, it looks like the ORIGINAL LITTLE MERMAID will come on TOP in this fight, as it should......hope Disney sent all the remakes to stream instead of theaters from now on and we can close that door forever, and soon Dreamworks learn the same lesson when their remake of How to Train your Dragon FAIL, let animated films alone Hollywood, stop remaking them in live action.
I can’t believe you had The Little Mermaid as your number 1 pick for the summer, Dan! That’s one prediction I think that will come back to bite you by summer’s end. I think most of us knew it would be marginally successful at best, and a complete flop at worst.
Don't worry ppl don't go see it. They launder millions and millions through movies. Yall don't question reality tho so. The government also has programs that pay for spitting out propaganda and pushing a divisive agenda. They're getting paid no matter what
The Little Mermaid is great. It’s no worse than the original, unlike the other live action remakes. He wasn’t wrong to pick think it would be number 1.
You also forgot Spider-Man Miles Morales that was released on PS5 was an amazing game❤❤ Never forget video games amazing 👊👊 Saw the movie in IMAX that's right in IMAX and it was amazing❤
One thing that needs clarifying (for me as well), is that my understanding is Marvel retains any merchandising rights for Spiderman, so Sony can't pick up more money from that aspect. I assume tie ins, (like Burger King) they do get money, but not sure how much of it. Regardless, Sony has more to gain and lose from how they budget a Spiderman movie than Disney with Mermaid or Comcast with Fast.
Was planning to catch Across the Spiderverse this weekend as I couldn't last week, but was gutted to learn that all the IMAX screens in my country have already switched it out completely for the new Transformers movie 😢 I haven't seen anything on IMAX since 2016 so I was super excited, but regular screen it is...
I want to see it again, and again, and again. Love this movie and if it hasn't already proven it it's definitely proving that animation is not a genre it's a medium to be respected just the same as live-action. 🙌
The Cinema Paradiso in Hollywood Florida is an interesting nonprofit theater. I wasn’t able to find much info on them online. There’s this strip of shops and restaurants on each side and then right in the middle is this tinyyy theater, fits maybe like 30-40 people. Not sure what their story is but it’s definitely one of the most unique as far as location and design.
Across the Spiderverse is an excellent example of a sequel that over performs on the first movie. When I saw the first one, the cinema was empty. People were not keen. The Oscar, and the 5 years has seen that first movie really blow up. Its almost not a surprise to see the cinema near full this evening.
So happy for Spider-Verse…loved the first one and it was definitely a box office that had great (8?) legs, but wasn’t sure how it’s success would translate and glad that it was even bigger than expected. Next up…boy this Flash opening is going to be fascinating. Could see it being the highest of the summer…wouldn’t be surprised if it goes the other way.
Could you go back to what you were doing a few months ago looking at how many screens each movie would have in your local theaters ? I thinkt it gave quite an interesting perspective to the box office numbers you give us for those movies.
Tracking is usually accurate. You just have to look at it after some factors come in. Reviews, early fan screenings etc. 1- 2 weeks out they’re usually really close.
I was riding the Monorail in Disney World on Friday. There were two other families in my car and both had seen the new Spider-Man movie the night before. I think those estimates are definitely low…
Honest question: What would you cut to bring down the budget? (I do think it's a good idea, but also I only hear give the striking X or Y what they want.) So everyone more, but also spend less. How, other than make an animated movie, do you do it? Avoid famous actors?
I dunno how Fathom events factor into these charts but I'm surprised that Shin Kamen Rider didn't crack the top 10 limited release considering they added a ton of screenings and a second date.
I missed the iconic soundtrack moments like what's up danger and I am not afraid of the dark but still the score was great and some cool songs, but what an amazing movie. This is shaping up to be a memorable trilogy and one of the best, if the third is even pretty good, not even great. Hope, it at least goes beyond 600 or much more. Let's see...
Hey Dan, have you ever thought about comparing the box office flashback to the weekend box office? What I mean is, after adjusting for inflation, seeing if the flashback weekend top 5 made more money overall than the current weekend top 5. I've wondered that a few times. Thanks for all the videos that you make!
I do wonder with Disney, especially with these remakes, how much they make off of merchandising and other revenue streams that the other studios don't necessarily have access to due to Disney itself being a brand. Perhaps they don't care so much about its budget because they expect the "princess" aspect of it to recoup the cost elsewhere.
Merchandising is huge for the popular princess movies. We are talking about $1B/yr (and they sell merchandise for years after the movie is released thanks to Disney+ and Disney Parks). Most Marvel characters don't sell so much merchandise (the exception is Spidey). And the Fast movies definitely don't sell merchandise at all
I have always wondered that, I guess with merchandising retailers also take a cut , as well as the companies that make the products (Matel , Hasbro etc) so maybe Disney dont make as much money as we think. However I guess the margins are high as due to the low material costs.
@@jim1242 someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the bulk of the money is in licensing. Disney makes money by licensing the character out to whoever makes the product, so the product price is mostly the manufacturers/distributers trying to make their end of the profit. But at this point, I'm sure Disney has exclusive deals/may outright own some of the manufacturers, adding more margin to their profits. Disney is making plenty bank off of their IP
Hey Dan...when you do a "Past Week in History", maybe could you include the budgets for those films at well? It would be interesting to see what budgets for major blockbusters looked like in the past. For example, I think the budget for Back To The Future III was, like, 40 million (about 93 million adjusted for inflation). All 3 Back To The Future movies probably cost less to produce than The Little Mermaid or Fast X...which is insane.
I didn't enjoy Across the Spider-Verse as much as a lot of other people - I thought it was visually spectacular and liked the characters for the most part, but I think I'm burned out on multiverse/timeline/metafiction stuff, and I thought it could have done with cutting out some of the Big Emotional Speechifying. I feel like such a visually inventive and expressive film could have got across its themes and character beats with less expository dialogue and monologues about parenthood and whatnot.

Seeing Spiderverse today. Didn’t want the weekend crowd. Looking forward to it.
I put Spiderverse as the top film of the summer on my prediction list, I'm feeling optimistic now.
Wow need to make a trip to Connecticut. Amazing theatre!!!
I remember being so pleasantly surprised by the first one, I definitely intend to see the second when my schedule will allow.
A little bit late (I watch this on Thursdays) so you may never see this, but @danmurrel I truly do miss the streaming charts. I hope you find more time for them someday...
I love your new (ish) return on investment section. It is by far my favorite new section and find it extremely interesting and put things into perspective
A Connecticut theater. Cool, I'll have to check it out.
So happy for Spider verse and Past Lives.
If you want to see a good, old-school crime beat-em-up action movie, The Roundup is worth checking out. Ma Dong Seok aka Don Lee deserves to be an international star. Pity that Eternals misused such a charismatic, badass actor
I saw it 2x in IMAX over the weekend… awesome.
So LM is holding very well so far)
Problem is that SK and China rejected the movie and those 2 were the biggest markets for that movie.
Let's see where Japan falls next week.(Aladdin 112M, but with todays Exchange rates that would already be a lot less Dollars)
And sure 250M is too much, but the movie was shut down by COVID (+ the onset Measures after filming started again) and is 40% under water(which is 99% CGI). So I'm guessing the original budget was ~200M, which is pretty standard considering the amount of CGI required.
I haven't even seen it yet but I'm so happy for it
I don't think Disney cares about "the Little Mermaid" doing well in theaters.
My sister loved Across the Spider Verse so much she saw it twice. And our theater was packed
Love your breakdowns Dan, keep up the good work.
Hey, two Guillermo del Toro film in the largest % increase, it makes me happy
I can’t believe you had The Little Mermaid as your number 1 pick for the summer, Dan! That’s one prediction I think that will come back to bite you by summer’s end. I think most of us knew it would be marginally successful at best, and a complete flop at worst.
I think it's very reasonable to look at past Disney live action remakes and bet on them making a lot of money
The overseas BO has been puzzlingly poor compared to other live action remakes but the film is doing quite well in domestic markets.
TLM still has a shot to be #1 and will likely end up in the top 3-4, so it wasn’t a bad prediction at all
Past Lives was my favorite movie of the year. Would love to see your review of it.
I saw it too! Its definitely somewhere on my best of list
You also forgot Spider-Man Miles Morales that was released on PS5 was an amazing game❤❤
Never forget video games amazing 👊👊
Saw the movie in IMAX that's right in IMAX and it was amazing❤
I remember you saying, back in 2018, that the second Spiderverse will be much higher, and you were right
I'm so glad Across the Spider-verse did as well as it did.
Prospector Theater is the real winner this week
I want to see it again, and again, and again. Love this movie and if it hasn't already proven it it's definitely proving that animation is not a genre it's a medium to be respected just the same as live-action. 🙌
The Cinema Paradiso in Hollywood Florida is an interesting nonprofit theater. I wasn’t able to find much info on them online. There’s this strip of shops and restaurants on each side and then right in the middle is this tinyyy theater, fits maybe like 30-40 people. Not sure what their story is but it’s definitely one of the most unique as far as location and design.
Love the new bad guy in spider verse! I really appreciate something original in these sort of movies
I liked Across the Spider-Verse better than Into the Spider-Verse. Thank you for tracking the movies as always!
Couldnt have happened to a better movie.. Im SO happy Across the Spiderverse did well... i absolutely loved it. Ill probably go see it again tbh.
Across the Spiderverse is an excellent example of a sequel that over performs on the first movie. When I saw the first one, the cinema was empty. People were not keen. The Oscar, and the 5 years has seen that first movie really blow up. Its almost not a surprise to see the cinema near full this evening.
GREAT work by that theater!!!
Another satisfying video
Thanks for the box office run down.
Was hoping Spider Verse could get close to $100million opening & wow.
Seen it twice now
So happy for Spider-Verse…loved the first one and it was definitely a box office that had great (8?) legs, but wasn’t sure how it’s success would translate and glad that it was even bigger than expected. Next up…boy this Flash opening is going to be fascinating. Could see it being the highest of the summer…wouldn’t be surprised if it goes the other way.
Aahhhh that shark! Got me again!
On a Monday, thanks for the gift Dan !
Honest question: What would you cut to bring down the budget? (I do think it's a good idea, but also I only hear give the striking X or Y what they want.) So everyone more, but also spend less. How, other than make an animated movie, do you do it? Avoid famous actors?
Some movies are just too long. Maybe shorter movies would lower the budgets.
I dunno how Fathom events factor into these charts but I'm surprised that Shin Kamen Rider didn't crack the top 10 limited release considering they added a ton of screenings and a second date.
I didn’t see a weekend report for it!
@Dan Murrell Yeah Toei tends to not be transparent with that kind of stuff. Thanks for the reply!
I wanted to see Shin Kamen Rider but me and my wife couldn’t find a showing in our area when we weren’t working
At this point it broken even, so Across the Spider-Verse at least made its money back and that's an accomplishment
Rooting for Spider Verse to bring home $$ and/or fame. They deserve it 120%
I'm gonna end up seeing the movie again, it was that good and it's so worth, so I see why it's doing so good.
I still need to see it again but I think Raimi still has the best Spider-Man 2.
We love you Dan
Hey Dan...when you do a "Past Week in History", maybe could you include the budgets for those films at well? It would be interesting to see what budgets for major blockbusters looked like in the past.
For example, I think the budget for Back To The Future III was, like, 40 million (about 93 million adjusted for inflation). All 3 Back To The Future movies probably cost less to produce than The Little Mermaid or Fast X...which is insane.
Waited all weekend for this.
I would love to see you cover the SAG strike on News with Dan 👀
I’m dead because the shark in your intro ate me. You should change it.
I love your theater spotlights!
If Beyond is of comparable quality to its preceeding films we are barrelling towards something that is in the best trilogy conversation.
