At the start, using samples seemed like a good idea to me. It was only after I identified my favorite ones that I matched them with my beloved pens, and that's when I purchased my favorite inks in bottles.
Yes to samples first! Before I knew what I was doing, I bought two full bottles of Diamine.. one I loved right away! (Lilac Satin from the shimmertastic line) And the other (inkvent Deck the Halls) it took me finally getting a stub nib to be able to appreciate it properly. I had so much regret before I figured that out.. but that's my extra tip... Try it in a stub before you make up your mind to buy it! If you don't like it even in stub then it's truly not worth the whole bottle.
Almost exclusively use black, I want red for editing purposes, I like purple, I want to try a brown, and I might get a blue. But my goal is reducing waste in my writing hobby so I'm keeping it simple and sticking to archival waterproofing switch greatly reduces the amount of experimentation I can get lost in.
Great video, Danielle! So much helpful information. And now, for my annoying comments... 😂 1) Did you change the title of the video while I was watching? When I saw the thumbnail titled "Bottles or Samples," I wondered how you were going to talk about that for half an hour! 😂 Since I love your content, I watched anyway and realized it's everything about fountain pen ink. 2) Totally #wrongtakeaway, but catching glimpses of those ink swatch notebooks, hearing the crinkling of the pages, and seeing all the beautiful colors, I am begging you for a flip-through of them!! I think I've watched all of your ink swatch videos, and filling these notebooks obviously happens off camera 😂 I would totally watch a video of you flipping through these pages, possibly with close-ups like you do in your swatch videos. Honestly, since I'm sure creating narration is hard, you could probably just have music without any talking, and tell people in the description (or brief intro) to check out your swatching videos if they want to hear about specific inks.
I didn't change the title ahah but I really didn't know what to do for a thumbnail 😅 I would LOVE to do a flip through of all the swatches!! It would be such a long video though.....like probably an hour plus 😅 Maybe I could film "chunks" and then piece them together 😂
I don't think that description of shading is correct. Shading is not when an ink changes color as it dries, that is called color changing. Shading is when an ink has a lighter color and a darker color when you lay more ink down. More saturated inks have less shading.
Sample bottles can be relabeled and refilled with that oops too light 50ml (or send that to me muhahaha, I LOVE pale inks) and sent to others. I've seen people in online pen groups wishing to try inks I have "extra" of, so far I've only offered to send and sent to one person, but I'm excited to do it again. It was nice for both of us. They're also super useful for swapping with other local artists/ink users.
Thanks for the overview. An overview of FP ink characteristics was fabulous. It reminded me of how to choose inks that I like. So informative- thanks again.
This series is SO helpful-I’ve been getting into fountain pens and inks and I have my first order coming from Vanness this weekend! Thank you for the incredible n calming vids 🩷
Keep watching the video attentively! 😃It is very informative! Regarding mixing - I love it. 😅 Recently combined Diamine Damson with Guitar Taisho Roman Opera Rose and Ferries Wheel Press Majestic Marple Syrup ✨🪄✨testing it in a low-cost Jinhao 100 golden skeleton pen. The color is stunning. Let's see how it will impact the pen.
Hello from Australia. Thanks for this great information. Could you confirm the shop you mentioned that has lots of inks. The transcript says ‘Vanesse’. I ordered from Goulet after a previous one of your videos and I am very happy with the 11 samples I ordered. Thanks x
I got a sample rack and a bunch of samples from Goulet and I am working my way through them slowly, Twsbis hold a lot of ink, haha. I make a note of colors I really like on a page in my planner for future reference. The bottles are beautiful but I find trying samples more convenient. What size are the white sticky dots you use on your sample bottles, I should get some of them. I pour ink from the sample into the ink miser, suck it up into my Twsbi that way, then return the extra back into the sample bottle. Thanks for the video!
The dip pens I mentioned: Speedball C-1 Nib Speedball B-1 Nib Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen with a Fude Nib Kakimori Brass Dip Nib with an Aluminum Holder I hope that helps!
I think you would be fine mixing those as they are from the same maker. You can test it with a dip pen before putting it in a fountain pen if you're nervous. I've mixed the Shikiori and Manyo lines before and they did fine :)
I been doing this about two years now, and just got samples last month at the Atlas Stationers Sidewalk sale during the ink swap, and even then, I took full bottles to swap. Its just something about me that can't bring myself to spend $4+ on a sample.
I can understand the price for the amount of ink in samples. Bottles are the better investment for long term, but if you don't like the ink, I find it hard to use a full bottle of it!
@mydandeliondiaries that's probably why I ended up swapping four bottles at Atlas, I didn't like them so hopefully their new owners will. I am going to order some sample vials for future ink swaps
Hello from Austin. This is a great video! I love how well thought out it is and all the varieties of inks & properties you cover. Great job putting this together! I wish there was a video like this before I full on sprinted down the inky rabbit hole 😂. Out of curiosity what was the worst reaction ink mix combination have you had? Are you attending the Dallas Pen show?
I mixed a DeAtramentis standard Violet ink with J. Herbin poussiere de lune and it bled through like 3 pages to TRP 😅 I've not had a mix that ruined a pen, but after that I'm careful of mixing across brands 😂 I am going to try to go to the Dallas Pen Show! I may have a family event though (waiting on some people) so depending on the day I will try to make it as it's pretty close for me!
@@mydandeliondiaries have you been before? This is my first time going and I’m not sure what to expect. I’ve got an Iroful notebook filled with things I want to look at & try out (if possible). Is there anything I should be aware of? On the topics of De Atramentis document inks, what are your thoughts? Im actually in need of a document ink and I’m not sure what to go with brand wise.
@@lej5055 I have not been before, but I would assume it is similar to other trade shows with tables and informative staff :) I would think they will have places to swatch ink and test out pens too! About the DeAtramentis inks, I LOVE them. They flow so beautifully. I think some of the Document colors are better than others. The Document Black is very popular among the planner community. You can also mix their document inks to create whatever color you want! You may also want to check out Rohrer and Klingners Sketch Inks, they are waterproof and affordable.
Thank you!! I very much enjoyed watching this. That Akkerman bottle looks amazing! I personally also use the syringe to wash out converters. Thank you so much again for this series! 🤗😘❤️🙏

I plan to find my few choice colors from samples, get them in bottles, and reuse the sample tubes for sharing, swapping, etc.

Hahah good to know!! I do think it is fun to swap inks, new colors, and new pen friendships!
You can purchase empty ink sample vials as well (google it, many shops offer them) if you really want to start sharing. It’s fun!
when you were describing "sheen" I kinda feel like "metallic" could've also been a good word to use
That is a great description!
