Listen not to judge, but to understand! We don't give this enough importance in our daily lives!
I am reminded of a powerful story about Oprah Winfrey. She was once talking with a celebrity on her show who had been through two decades of imprisonment.
As they were talking about his life before imprisonment, she spoke something that made the celebrity break into tears. While he cried, Oprah also ended up crying with him - because she could feel what he must have been through when he was shattered and smashed into pieces.
That is the super power of Oprah - she listens deeply, empathetically, with ease - to the person sitting next to her. To her, nothing else matters at the time. That is one of the reasons she has seen material success as a consequence.
How many times has it happened that we are listening to the other person just to reply, to give them a solution or maybe even to debate them? How many times has it ever happened that we listened not to judge, not to fit them into a mould of what life “should be”, and instead, just listened with all our heart and ears?
Sadly, that is the very reason we don’t understand our own selves.
Sadly, that is the very reason we walk through the world with our headphones on - speaking loudly because we can’t hear our own voice.
Sadly, not listening is the reason this vicious cycle continues.
Oprah has this superpower; she uses it at a time in her career when she really doesn’t have to listen. Yet she chooses to listen, therefore, is always able to go deep within herself and dig out her own pearls.

ओप्रा विनफ्रे, जो अमेरिका की एक जानी मानी टॉक शो होस्ट हैं, उनकी एक कहानी ने मुझे बड़ा प्रभावित किया। वो अपने शो पर एक प्रसिद्द व्यक्ति का इंटरव्यू ले रहीं थीं, जिसने लगभग २० साल जेल में बिताए थे।
जब वे उस व्यक्ति के जेल जाने के जीवन से पहले की बात कर रहे थे, ओप्रा ने कुछ ऐसा कहा जिसे सुनकर वो व्यक्ति रो पड़ा। उस व्यक्ति को देख ओप्रा भी रो पड़ीं - क्योंकि उस समय उन्हें इस बात का एहसास था कि उस व्यक्ति को किन परिस्थितियों से गुज़ारना पड़ा होगा, जिससे वो पूरी तरह टूट गए थे, बिखर गए थे।
यह ओप्रा की सबसे बड़ी शक्ति है - वे अपने सामने बैठे हुए इंसान को गहराई से, सहानुभूतिपूर्वक, सहजता से सुनती हैं। उनके लिए उस समय उस व्यक्ति से ज़्यादा और कुछ माइने नहीं रखता। शायद यही एक कारण है जिस वजह से उनके पास स्थूल धन की भी कोई कमी नहीं है।
कितनी बार ऐसा हुआ है दोस्तों कि हम दूसरे व्यक्ति को सिर्फ जवाब देने के लिए, उन्हें समाधान देने के लिए या शायद उनके साथ बहस करने के लिए ही सुन रहे थे? कितनी बार ऐसा हुआ है कि हमने नहीं सुना कि उन्हें न्याय नहीं करना है, उन्हें जीवन के एक सांचे में फिट नहीं करना है, और इसकी बजाय, हमें पूरी शिद्दत से सिर्फ उनकी बात सुननी है?
शायद यही कारण है कि हम खुद को नहीं समझ पाते हैं।
शायद यही कारण है कि हम अपने हेड फ़ोन लगाकर घूमते हैं - ज़ोर से बोलते हैं क्यूंकि हम खुद की ही आवाज़ नहीं सुन सकते।
शायद न सुनने के कारण ही यह चक्र चलता रहता है।
ओप्रा में यह शक्ति है; और वे इसे अपने करियर में एक ऐसे समय में उपयोग करती हैं जब उसे वास्तव में उन्हें इसकी ज़रूरत नहीं हैं। फिर भी, वह सुनने का विकल्प चुनती हैं, इसलिए, हमेशा अपने भीतर गहराई तक जाने और अपने स्वयं के मोती खोदने में सक्षम होती हैं।
