- Three songs from Jerome Kern's 'Show Boat' were featured in John Wilson's 'Broadway Sound' Prom in 2012 at London's Royal Albert Hall. Julian Ovenden sings "Where's the Mate for Me?" and is then joined by Sierra Boggess for "Make Believe," while Rodney Earl Clarke brings the sequence to a close with "Ol' Man River."
There's a torrent of emotion in Julian's singing, and a sincerity and urgency that demands you pay attention. The perfect singer for Broadway's love songs.
Perfect voices…perfect looks…perfect music…

Sierra is stupendous her high notes are effortlessly beautiful with awesome tone! Adore this woman's singing! Julian is spot on also!!
Will never got tied of listening to these wonderful singers.👏👏👏
Showboat was such a great musical. Old Man River gets me every time!!!😩😭🥰
😢😢😢
His voice is so beautiful. Perfect.
Sierra is such a gift to us. Whatever she does turns to gold.
Oveden and Sierra is perfect combination. Their facial expression is superd. Beautiful couple with great voice, what more can u ask for
Need them to sing of love now!!
These are two beautiful people with magnificent voices.
@@ritapacitti9599 Sierra is always magnificent. Julian most of the time very good but has a slight tendency to be pitchy and nasally. When he opens from chest his voice wonderful!
I have the BBC'S "The Sound Of Music Live!" Which premiered shortly after the American version. Julian stars as Cpt. Von Trappe, and is outstanding! His voice is like butter! And, he's just so damned gorgeous!
Thank you for sharing these 3 songs by Jerome Kern. I have seen this show 3 times, but John Wilson's BBC Proms orchestra and singers is the BEST one of all!!
Masterful work here by all performing... Thank YOU!!!!
OMR - Just amazing!
Perfection...absolute perfection
I love these guys!
Rodney Earl Clarke is amazing here! He has such huge shoes to fill with the iconic Paul Robson and William Warfield coming before him in the two movies and he presents a wonderful version here.
Ole man River... So so beautiful
Sinatra did it perfectly, even for a white man. He was a master with his renditions of classic and tin pan alley songs. Always had the best arrangers, conductors and musicians. There was no one like him before, and not likely another will ever out do him.
He has an old timey ‘Al Jolson-ish’ quality to his voice which lends itself well to the part. It evokes the era of the play. Her voice is operatic and harkens back to Kathryn Grayson who played Magnolia in the 1951 film version. Well done! I love Show Boat. Jerome Kern really captured the feeling and location of the late 1800’s South through his haunting music. The actor who sang Joe’s ‘Old Man River’ has a great voice as well. Bravo! 👏🏻
Rodney Clarke _is_ well-versed in musical theatre. Wonderful to be able to enjoy these talented folks thanks to these channels.
Old Man River, the most beautiful song in the world.
Amazing
Never thought this could be done better than Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel in the movie. I was wrong.
Somehow better on stage, and good chemistry. Playing off each other and not just to the audience.
Where’s Julian now? 2018?
Need him in California!!
that's Jerome Kern AND Oscar Hammerstein II
Julian should be in more big musicals. Top male leads for big musicals not that plentiful in US
Get real. Not plentiful in a country with 330 million people?
Musical theater is very gynocentric. It is geared toward women and gays. Julian is very refreshing in that he has a very masculine style.
I was wrong. “Only Make Believe” was sung by Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson in “Showboat. These two are the only ones who sang it as well as Julian and Sierra!
loll! as if you have a clue what you're talking about!
Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel sang in the 1951 Show Boat movie .But Irene Dunne sang it in the 1936 movie before and for me they were better than Grayson and Keel. Their voices like also Julien and Sierra were like the 1927 original singers a soprano Norma Terris and a tenor Howard Marsh not a soprano and a baritone Grayson and Keel.I heard an Irish song sang by Howard Marsh and,Julian Ovenden and Alan Jones s voices are similar not Howard Keel.
So I dont agree. The ones who sang as beautifully as Sierra and Julian were Irene and Allan and after them John Raitt and Barbara Cook in the 1962 recording
It would have been wonderful to be able to hear the whole song without UA-cam intrupting the last few bars of "Make Believe" to bring us an ad. Shame on UA-cam.
Quite right. These ad interruptions are totally counter-productive and have the opposite effect of whatever it is they are trying to achieve. I'm surprised that the powers-that-be at UA-cam can't see it for themselves but if enough people complain they may have these wretched ads removed.
"Showboat" is considered the first "Broadway" musical, and the show that transformed Vaudeville into Broadway, and made going to the theatre a respectable event, compared to the seedy Vaudeville spectacles.
No Howard keel but nearly ☺
Love them!!!
Good voice, but the incredible bass from Paul Robeson was one of a kind...
drh kleinert two different voices. Stupid comment.
