One of my uncles got trichinosis from bear meat. He hunted it himself, so I would guess this meat has an entirely different pedigree. The bear's skin hangs in our front entryway, only showing two conspicuous holes for the entry and exit of the bullet.
@@sirjazz1268 It’s not super common anymore but bear hunting is still a thing in North America. Thankfully, A lot of hunters hunt them responsibly and care about following the “fair chase” rules so the hunting doesn’t disrupt the balance nature Grizzlies used to be a preferred hunting species but hunters backed off once laws let them know it had now become a threatened subspecies and needs ample time to repopulate so now people who still hunt bear have switched to black bear
Looks great! I haven't seen the show, so I can't speak for the techniques used therein, but if it's "chicken fried bear" in the same sense as chicken fried steak, you'd want to pound it thin with a tenderizer like you're making schnitzel and use a seasoned flour and egg breading

I really thought an equivalent meat would be a substitute for bear, such as beef. But of course I was shocked to learn it was real bear meat; they went extinct in my country in the 5th century BC. (Excusing the fact that they were the ancestors of Polar bears, and some brown bears were re-introduced since.)
The US still has plenty of bears, so thankfully it's not that tough to get them here. Might be a bit expensive since they're not a mass produced animal, but that adds to the charm.
That’s the thing about cooking competitions, if you’re given a ingredient that you’re supposed to highlight, that ingredient needs to be the clear star of the dish not masked behind another strong flavor.
"legally sourced" oh right I was so worried you were poaching bears. i think that was the wrong way to do chicken-frying, you'd want to do it pretty similarly to the katsu... no big deal though. this makes for better variety between the two dishes. Just something to keep in mind if you make fried chicken sometime, or regular chickenfried steak.
Though I’m a person who loves anime, I would always pass these episodes over due to Babish not being included. Never had bear meat(no one in my family hunts bear since you have to pay to get something done with the pelt out here and that means you're either spending a couple thousand to get the pelt turned into something or you have a pelt in your deep freeze for a long time while you get the money to get it treated) but I've heard it's an extremely flavourful meat most people out here tend to use it in sausage and cut it with pork to mellow it out
It's probably plot armor, haha.
These episodes are so interesting they almost make me want to try Food Wars.
Give it a shot, there's surprisingly a LOT of culinary techniques in the show. The mangaka had a professional chef as a consultant who created/tested almost every dish on the show! I learned a number of interesting cooking tricks from it. Also if you want a watching partner ChefPK on youtube got his start reacting to it as a professional chef, don't know if the vids survived the youtube strikepocolypse tho.
Yep, until the last season with the dark chef they had someone helping with the dish to make them realistic (if I remember correctly)
@@aaronmorris3065 Yep, season 4 and prior, with the cooking at least, are still grounded in reality.
Season 5 though is when it went off the ham with the fantasy aspect of the show since the author couldn't consult the actual cooking expert so he kinda had to improvise on the ball
The plot is dumb but the food is worth it
@@aaronmorris3065 I'm sorry, the dark what?
Alvin really bringing it home with this one. At first I was sceptical but now I can't imagine the BCU without Alvin.
I instinctively said "GENERAL KENOBI" when Alvin came in with his "Hello There"
Alvin: "Once the Beroux..."
Me: "AUNT BERUUUUUUUU"
BABISH YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, I restarted watching the series and it has been 12 HOURS SINCE I JUST WATCHED THIS DISH BEING MADE IN THE ANIME man the coincidence is unparalled
Does Food Wars have chefs on the writing staff? Every dish so far has been a winner.
Yes they do. The anime and manga exaggerate a bit on how the food tastes but everything you see in the series can be recreated IRL. A bunch of food youtubers, BCU included, have already done most of them.
Somebody actually recreated the bear dishes, and it looks amazing 🤩😲✨
I’m glad I put my faith in “Anime with Alvin” to bring our Shokugeki foods to life.
I was shocked when I saw the thumbnail for this. I'm a huge fan of Food Wars!
For these I'd really like more side by sides with the anime and real version.
Thanks for the recipes. Last time I cooked bear I marinaded it in brandy. I really liked it, but my family didn't. 🤷
That's to bad eh? you should try a bolognese-style sauce with some fatty bear mince, i recon this really brings out the flavor. Now that i think about it, maybe even a Lasagna out of that, just a thought tho
I'm thinking I made it too sweet, and should have added some balsamic vinegar.
Edit: or some celery and onions.
Garlic, red wine and pepper is my go to for bear. Kiss it on a hot pan and braze it for a while. Yeeeesss please!
As the neighbor to a hunter....bear meat gets a bad rap... Its delicious!
The fact that there is an anime cooking show, and that that show actually puts time into making recipes based in logic and reasoning blows my mind
I agree! I don’t care much for the characters however I find the technical aspects made entertaining intriguing even if the ecchi is distasteful. I have a similar fascination with Kakegurui, which does it with gambling instead. Although there are bizarre nonsensical plot convenient intuitions; the math actually checks out when it is used, Kakegurui Twin incorporating that better.
These videos always get me in the mood to bake something
The 6:23 "Bear roux/Baroo" pun was on point 👌
That Bear gravy has me dreaming now. 😋
This is my favorite anime. I love seeing so many of the foods being created!!
man you really went all out. i feel like this is one of the best episodes of babish to date, lots of attention to all the details and i loved how you handled all of it :)
The fact the dishes work this well in application is really cool.
Really impressed that the Food War dishes turn out so well. Awesome job as always y'all!
"Pounding New York bear steak" is not something I expected to hear in a cooking show
Definitely one of the more interesting Food Wars and challenging dishes in the series! Now that you've done this, I'm really interested to see how you'd tackle Isshiki's eel hitsumabushi in the Cuisine de Regiment, which involves Kansai-style grilled eel, cheese risotto (with homemade cheese), walnut-smoked garlic chips and a broth made with some mysterious fermented concoction made by Sakaki and Marui
Why I love Shokugeki No Soma so much, the cooking is pretty accurate and makes really tasty dishes in the real world.
One of my uncles got trichinosis from bear meat. He hunted it himself, so I would guess this meat has an entirely different pedigree. The bear's skin hangs in our front entryway, only showing two conspicuous holes for the entry and exit of the bullet.
I was looking for someone to finally mention trichinosis.
I forgot how much I loved that character with the spice knowledge
I didn’t expect bear meat to ever be featured on the channel.
They made a bear stew from RDR2 before
...bear stew?
I didn't even know that bear meat was a THING !
@@sirjazz1268 It’s not super common anymore but bear hunting is still a thing in North America. Thankfully, A lot of hunters hunt them responsibly and care about following the “fair chase” rules so the hunting doesn’t disrupt the balance nature
Grizzlies used to be a preferred hunting species but hunters backed off once laws let them know it had now become a threatened subspecies and needs ample time to repopulate so now people who still hunt bear have switched to black bear
I'm pretty sure I met New York bear on Grindr once
I’m super impressed with the amount of work that went into this video! I love this series ❤️
man alvin is everywere and that makes me happy
Looks great! I haven't seen the show, so I can't speak for the techniques used therein, but if it's "chicken fried bear" in the same sense as chicken fried steak, you'd want to pound it thin with a tenderizer like you're making schnitzel and use a seasoned flour and egg breading
bro i had no idea alvin now works with babish ive been keeping my eye on his channel for ages and wondering why i only get videos every 6 months of happy alvin noises and now THERES SO MUCH ALVIN
Can you make some chili dogs from the sonic series? It’s the series 31st anniversary!
YESS!!
Alvin, here’s a tip for you : to AVOID crying from onions, simply chew gum or salt water taffy while you’re chopping!
Please make any food from Fire Emblem Three Houses: Sweet Bun Trio, Pheasant Roast with Berry Sauce, etc.
Agreed
Definitely
I didn't think it was possible to make anime food in reality that looks exactly like the show it's from until I saw Babish's channel.
This is so funny cos in the part of England where I'm from, 'bare' is slang for 'lots of'.
I gotta wonder what y'all call bears over there
@@BigHatLoganGaming a gang of them and we shout 'run! There's bare bears! "
If I get a black bear this season, I’m definitely making this.
Which country you are from?
Oh my! That crazy. They are quite abundant here in the US. I know a few people who actually hunt for them
The US still has plenty of bears, so thankfully it's not that tough to get them here. Might be a bit expensive since they're not a mass produced animal, but that adds to the charm.
@@rusdanibudiwicaksono1879 Ireland. :x
I do find it fascinatingly clever that the MC chose to work WITH the flavor of the bear meat, rather than try to fight it like his opponent did
That’s the thing about cooking competitions, if you’re given a ingredient that you’re supposed to highlight, that ingredient needs to be the clear star of the dish not masked behind another strong flavor.
Love seeing the Food Wars! recipes. Makes my day bearable.
Waka Waka I am a dad I do not regret that joke.
I love the fact that all the dishes in food wars are actually cookable
"legally sourced" oh right I was so worried you were poaching bears.
i think that was the wrong way to do chicken-frying, you'd want to do it pretty similarly to the katsu... no big deal though. this makes for better variety between the two dishes. Just something to keep in mind if you make fried chicken sometime, or regular chickenfried steak.
I'd been holding off on this one for so long until I watched the Food Wars episode.. this looks as amazing as it does in the show
Wonder if we could get some dishes that are made in psychonauts 2 during a level called " Compton's cookoff. ". It would be really cool!
Oh man, I forgot about Psychonauts, that game was great
Man the memories, might have to go back and rewatch this show. The main reason why I wanted to get into culinary arts
Wonderful ! I will definitely try this 😍😍😍😍
I'm so glad we get a constant stream of these. I joined the BCU because of babish, but these days I stay for Alvin.
I haven't tried this yet. Looks so delicious 😍😍😍
Though I’m a person who loves anime, I would always pass these episodes over due to Babish not being included. I decided to finally check them out about a week ago and I can’t believe how much great content I missed out on. I’m slowly but surely making my way through the episodes and they’re amazing.
(Doofenshmirtz voice) If I had a nickel for every time a BCU Dish randomly used bear meat, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice-
I truly enjoy Alvin's easy manner and way of cooking. Well Done!
Hey Alvin, you ever watch/read Golden Kamuy? If no, I would recommend. Also, they have lots of Ainu recipes, so it’s very relevant to this show. 😁
"It is amost terrifying how polished this dish is" is a pretty apt descriptor for a lot of this channel TBH.
I find myself watching this channel more for Alvin than Babish. I'm an anime nut anyway, and I love those who try to recreate anime food. Is that bad?
Also, the bear puns were bear-ly bear-able. Thanks Alvin! Keep up the great work.
Alvin's cadance reminds me so much of the guy from the food wishes channel, it's comforting ❤️
