    A popular theory is that Nepheli is not a descendent of Godfrey, but the last surviving member for the Stormlord line. This is why she had a hawk, who the Stormhawk ashes remind her of. This is why she can smell the ancient storm in them. This is why she wields Stormhawk axes with storm lightning powers. Her people were slaughtered as a child, according to her own account, when she was too young to fight. She's describing Godfrey's conquering of Stormveil. Godfrey defeated the Stormlords, and his last great challenger was the warrior of Morne, who fashioned his slain people's blades into the Grafted Blade and swore the Oath of Vengeance and challenged Godfrey. He failed, but this was Godfrey's final true rival, after which the light left his eyes. The misbegotten at Castle Morne are probably former Stormveil citizens whose resentment toward the golden lineage is why they rebel and slaughter the nobles at Castle Morne and Godrick's soldiers. Godfrey adopted the child Nepheli and took her with him when the Tarnished left the Lands Between, and she was raised to become a warrior in the Badlands with the rest of the tarnished.
    She's chosen as the true ruler of Stormveil not because of her relation to Godfrey, but because she's the last scion of the Stormlords. Stormveil is her home. This is why at the end of her quest, she becomes summonable to challenge Godfrey, the man who slaughtered her people, and at long last avenge them.

    In my opinion the banished knights did not serve anyone in particular, they were exiled from their homelands and sent to the penal colonies like Castle Sol with the exiled soldiers and they were given their armor and weapons "(Halberd) Given to knights who, whether by misfortune or misdeed, were forced to abandon their homes. Most of these knights were sent to the fringes, where they were forced to start anew with only despair for company." This explains why you can find their equipment everywhere, they are just generic armors and weapons given to exiled soldiers and warriors.
    Don't know if they can be considered canon, but many item description from patch 1.0 give us some additional informations about them, and they do not contradict any other description in the final game. For example the banished kinght helm in patch 1.0 states that Stormveil was once a penal colony too, and it makes sense since you can find them here: "Deep red hood that covers the whole head. Stormveil was once a place of exile, and this hood is a remainder from the convicted men's precepts. "Expose thyself not, but govern thyself to be whole hid; else the curse slip inside thee.""
    The banished knights woship dragons, probably because they are all fierce warriors (These fierce warriors were each and all accomplished. Perhaps that is why, despite their territorial losses, they were still named knights - banished knight armor description) and the dragon cult is centered around war and becoming a stronger warrior through the power of dragon hearts (Features the spoils of a dragon catch as an emblem of pride as both dragon hunter and partake of communion. (...) They spend their lives pursuing the strength of dragons, for its sublime beauty and inspiration of awe. - dragon knight set) but some banished knights simply worship the dragons and the storm and do not want to partake.
    From the banished knight armor description in patch 1.0: "Knight's armor, scoured by salt winds and skirmishing. Chestpiece worn by Stormveil Knights. The twisted horn on the right shoulder, patterned after that of a dragon, signifies adherence to a forbidden form of worship; the consumption of dragon flesh."
    And of course since they are dragon whorshippers reaching Farum Azula was their ultimate goal, from the altered banished knight helm description in 1.0: "Helm of a Stormveil knight. Long ago, those who sought the Storm Aerie traveled far from the capital, and settled in Stormveil. The Stormveil knights are their descendants. The Storm Aerie is believed to be the home of dragons, which watch over a great tomb."
    As you said storm and dragons are linked, for example Nepheli's axe summons storm and lightning, same with Niall protesis. Vyke was a member of the dragon cult of Leyndell, and when you fight him in the evergaol he uses lightning incantations and the weapon art of his spear summons a storm, and of course Placidusax lives into a storm and can become a storm, so I think that Placidusax was the Storm Lord too.
    Maybe he was known as the Stormlord when he was Elden Lord? Perhaps he took human form and ruled the Lands Between from Stormveil castle with his stormhawks, but then Godfrey defeated him and Stormveil become a place of exile and Godrick's castle? Maybe this is why Gransax attacked Leyndell, he wanted revenge

  • @Parrisnights
    @Parrisnights Рік тому +45

    I think there is still enough ambiguity to suggest that the Stormhawk Ashes were the ashes of a Lord of Storms and that Nepheli is able to rule the castle by figuratively and literally having the blood of the Lord of Storms. Both Godfrey and the Hawk ashes would qualify her for this position if this were the case. The claw marks in the castle could be interpreted as giant talon marks or giant claw marks to back both of these 2 rivaling theories. What we know FOR SURE: Elden Ring loves doubles

    To me, it's very clear that the Banised Knights are dragon pochers. Hunting them down to reclaim power. They even have Wyrms on their helms, connecting them back to the form men takes when chasing the power of dragons. Even the Draconic Tree sentinels have these six limbed beasts on there.

      To add on to your hypothesis, when the sword-wielding Banished Knights cast their fire stream/fire breath spell, the incantation sigil of the Dragon Communion spells is formed just before the incantation is released.

      Supposedly, those banished knights who can cast draconic spells also take extra damage from dragon weapons, a fact that also adds to this hypotesis. They hunt dragons and partake in the Dragon Communion ritual to gain strength. Maybe they just seek power for its own sake, unlike the draconic Erdtree Sentinels, hence the banishment.

    I must say I don't think that Placidusax is the storm lord.
    First and most severe, it would make no sense for a dragon to build a castle the size of Stormveil. As we see with Farum Azula, the dragons prefer some open spaces where they actually have space to move.
    Secondly, in terms of banished knights and tree sentinels I don't think they would serve the dragons in any manner but rather fight them, as shown by the use of dragon heart incantations.
    Lastly, I don't think we have seen any person who could be the true Stormlord yet. I feel like that could be something we might get in a future dlc.

    Another great video sir, this also brings into question who built Stormveil Castle and when since it seems to be distantly related to Farum; also the Storm King description says "when the winds of Stormveil raged like no other", this implies the Castle has been there for a long long time (remember the painting that doesn't show Stormveil?)
    And I can't but to relate the "raging winds" to Farum and it's tornadoes

    The banished knignt shields are generic shields that have no true house behind it, it has been given to knights who have commited misfortune or misdeeds. The entire set is, fashioned specifically for those who lost a war. The dragon on their head could very well be symbolic as godfrey took placidusax's title, his domain.
    The reason why they don't attack exiled soldires is because they are in the same situation, the only difference is that Banished knights kept their knighthood.
    I do not believe they are from the age of the dragons and instead came to partake in communion, communion is always seen as a evil towards dragons. The entire operation is poaching dragons for their hearts.
    That being said I do believe placidusax was the storm king. Godrick considers dragons trueborn heirs, potentially towards the storm lord. A ironic turn of fates as the descendent of Godfrey, the man who overthrew the rain of ancient dragons, would prostrate himself to a pale imitation of one. Godrick is not fully in control of the Stormhawks there as he needs to amputate them, force them to handle explosives, and wear helmets that resemble those in real life used train birds, something a true storm lord wouldn't need to do.
    Storm hawks can also be found near ancient dragons.

    I believe as well that the Storm Lord was Placidusax, and that Godfrey battled them - not just to lay low a powerful foe and rival to Marika's burgeoning empire, but for his scales. Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are Placidusax's own scales, and as such are able to lightly twist time, allowing the creation of a weapon capable of slaying a god. Placidusax, mighty as they were, was only a Lord - not a God. God means many things in ER. Marika is called a God, yet is below the Elden Beast, which is called a god when we kill it, yet the Beast is a vassal of the Greater Will, considered an Outer God. And if the Gloam Eyed Queen was a true rival to Marika, as a matriarch of her own order, it's not a stretch to call her a God. And Maliketh was able to slay her /even though/ he didn't yet wield Destined Death. Godfrey thrashed Placidusax, and from their scales, Maliketh's Black Blade could slay the GEQ.

    I believe that lion is Godwyn. The blonde locks that hangs down and the use of death mist and golden lightning are all signs of Godwyn. He's the prince of death hence why he vomits this death fog like the eyeball frogs in the Nameless City, and gold lightning is said to be used by Godwyn and his soldiers in Leyndell. The spell "Death Lightning" which you get from Fortissax literally says that gold lightning is a trait specifically of Godwyn. The lion reference is possibly due to him being the first son of Godfrey.

    I agree that Placidusax is a very likely candidate, at least the original one and it's possible that a hawk replaced him at some point. I wanted to add some other implications. For starters Placi is a Lord located in the eye of a massive storm which would literally make him the "Storm Lord". Ashes of war such as Stormcaller and Stormstomp (all used by banished knights) remind me a lot of what Farum Azula looks like with visible gusts of air and chunks of rock being lifted up from the ground. Stormlord also implies that it's not just wind but also lightning which as we know is connected to dragons in elden ring. This point is further supported by the Stormhawk axe which has an ash of war very similar to stormcaller . It summons yellow lightning from the sky (once again creating a connection to dragons).

    • @GrievyRZ
      @GrievyRZ Рік тому +3

      Very interesting points. But remember that when theory crafting, it's important to analyse information and connetcions, and then make conclusions. Not the other way around.
      I mean, saying Storms has to imply lighting is just straight up wrong. And the storm ashes of wars are most definetly old technuiqes from Stormhill. Pluss, Nepheli's lightning is golden, and Godwyn (firstborn son of Godfrey and Marika) was known for weilding it. So it's probably just a referance to her lineage.
      It is true that Placidusax is the most likely candidate for being the Storm Lord, even though it just seems subcontiously wrong...

    • @Fo1ds
      @Fo1ds Рік тому +2

      @@GrievyRZ thanks for the insight.
      Storms usually have lightning so I don't think it's wrong to think it implies lightning.
      Also golden lightning wielded by Godwyn (just like all golden lightning) is sourced from dragons. How do I know that? Death lightning item description.

    • @GrievyRZ
      @GrievyRZ Рік тому +2

      @@Fo1ds the item description for Death Lightning states: "Incantation that channels the power of ancient dragon Fortissax, now corrupted by Death."
      I think the source of the Ancient Dragons lightning is their Gravel Stone scales, which is thightly connected to lighting. Even golden lighting. Perhaps its the Ancient Dragons scales which gives them their lighting powers? The Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone directly states that The Dragonlord's Gravel Stone scales let's him twist time.
      I don't believe Placidusax controls the storms, making him the Storm Lord, I think he controls time. This way Placidusax can hide himself, and a repaired Farum Azula, away in a storm that "has been raging since time immemorial".

    • @Fo1ds
      @Fo1ds Рік тому +3

      @@GrievyRZ Ok there is a lot to unpack here so I will adress the points 1 by 1. Sorry if this takes a long time to read but I just want to present a proper case.
      Firstly, Gravel Scales being the source of Ancient Dragons's lightning powers. While the gravel stone scales are defientely related to their lightning power I do not think they are the source of it. My reason for that is the fact that for example the dragonscale blade is made from a dragon scale yet does not posses true lightning powers, instead it channels fake ice lightning created by the Numen. We also see that gravel stone and Ancient Dragon Smithing stones do not exibit any sort of lightning producing properties. To add to this, in the real world a stone like graphite is a material that can conduct electricity (but not produce it) so if anything I think that dragon scales don't produce but rather conduct and channel the lightning. This also explains why the dragonscale blade has fake ice lightning, the Numen made a blade capable of channeling lightning but it could not produce it. The numen could not recreate real dragon lightning and so they resorted to imbuing it with their fake ice lightning. The golden lightning is sourced from Ancient Dragons, and part of the reason why the Ancient Dragon worship was permitted under the erdtree as their lighitng had the grace of gold in it. All lightning incantations in ER are derrived from Ancient Dragons and their cult with the only excpetion being ice lightning which is wielded by dragonkin (an attempt to recreate the power of Ancient Dragons by the Numen).
      It's also never stated that Placidusax's scales let him control time, rather it seems that it's because they are his scales they have a trace of his power. While it's never exsplicitly stated that placi is the one controlling the storms in farum azula I would say it's probable that he is the reason behind them. The storms seem to be keeping Farum Azula in the air or ar least help it remain there and they protect him. He also has a skill called "Thundercloud form" which allows him to travel in/as a thundercloud which is very closely tied to storms . IMO It's very lickely that his time powers and the storms are related.
      Edit: accidentally said gravel instead of graphite on one sentence.

Outside Leyndell, there are also a large number of banished knight corpses/pieces of armor embedded into the ground, so even beyond Redmane there are signs of some kind of conflict. It's possible the ones outside of Leyndell participated in the Shattering, serving various demigods (like Oleg or Edgar,) but no matter how one chooses to read into it, there are going to be some inconsistencies.
      If Placidusax really was the Storm Lord, and the Banished Knights served him, I think it's likely that the reason their armor and weapons can be found in so many places is because they were strongholds of a prior era Godfrey & co. later conquered.

    Seems plausible considering Placidusax literally has storms behind him and said he rests in heart of a storm. It does seem though Stormveil seems rather small castle for the chap, Farum Azula still almost feels like it was the old palace that got blasted. Suppose it also possible that they ain't banished knights but just the armour of them was taken and their resources after the Storm Lord was defeated.

      Wouldn't the castle be pretty odd for a giant storm hawk too?

    Personally, I think the banished knights are probably not a unified faction anymore. Hence why some use storm skills while others use dragon communion incantations. Since Godfrey defeated the Storm Lord, their ranks have been split between several armies and fortresses where they pledged their loyalty to new masters - even if it meant being used as weapons against their former comrades.

    You know, on 2nd thought, could commander Niall be the storm lord? He summons two banished knights, including one that looks and fights like oleg. He wears the veterans prosthesis, a weapon with a unique storm attack and he's the strongest non/dragon storm themed character in the game. Maybe he served the storm lord? Apparently Niall is name or Irish origin that means, "champion."

    Stormlord was Grandsax.

    I'm starting to think that the storm lord is just the impaled Dragon in Godrick's Arena. The dragon has wings covered in feathers, just like the dragon on the banish knight's helm. Among living Dragons, Greyoll has the most similarity.

    I don't believe placidusax to be the stormlord, despite the similarities, Placidusax at that time was an elden lord, shouldn't that be mentioned when talking about the stormlord if they are one and the same. Also, it is stated that Placidusax retired when his god fled, but there is no statement of any defeat nor of a fight with Godfrey in his remembrance, nor with anyone else, and knowing how important was that fight, if it was the reason of him losing power over the Elden Ring and retiring to Farum Azula, why isn't it mentioned? Nowhere is the stormlord stated to be an elden lord, and since Placidusax retired when his god fled, then such god should have been present during the hipotethic war between the dragons and the golden order, why then there is no mention of the golden order fighting that god? We are talking about a civilization that ruled over the Elden Ring and therefore over the whole lands between, with their lord and their god, if that war truly happened, we are talking about the most powerful enemy the golden order ever faced by far, and yet, we see little to no evidence of such conflict, not even a sword monument. How can it be that the time Godfrey fought a warrior that ruled over castle Morne got more recognition in history than the time he fought the greatest civilization on the lands between, defeated an elder lord and expulsed a literal god? Also the fact that Stormveil castle looks so different to Farum Azula we can barely establish a connection between those two, and Stormveil was at least an important location for the stormlord. There is also the fact that we don't see evidence of the beastmen in Stormveil or anywhere else besides Farum Azula and that cave in dragonbarrow, cave that is actually close to the bestial sanctum, a place clearly related to Farum Azula

    You got it all wrong Godfrey was elden lord in the golden order not the crucible plucidisax is who was elden lord in the crucible Godfrey defeated the storm lord first lore of that does exist in the game it's highly speculated that placidusax was the storm lord that actually makes the most sense
