  • On June 18, 2023 at 11:18 a.m., the Sankt Augustin volunteer fire brigade was alerted to a fire in the motorcycle shop on the main street.
Upon arrival, it turned out that the building was fully engulfed in fire, which is why the alarm level was raised to B4 around 11:25 a.m. and to B5 around 11:30 a.m.
At least one squad of three firefighters from the LG Niederpleis extinguishing group entered the building. A short time later there was an explosion. One of the emergency services was able to leave the building with minor injuries. A firefighter and a father of two were initially missing. Rescue teams had to stop the search due to the temperature and the risk of collapse.
Psychosocial support units PSU from the Rhein-Sieg district and Bonn were requested, as well as numerous fire brigade, rescue and care workers from the Rhein-Sieg district. In addition, the control center was manned.
First the equipment shed of the LG Niederpleis, which is in the immediate vicinity of the site, served as the staging area, then the car park of the Aldi central warehouse and finally the Rewe car park opposite the GH Niederpleis.
At around 12:15 p.m., the warning app Nina was triggered because a large cloud of black smoke was moving over the city. The permanent criminal service KDD took up the investigation.
Around 1:00 p.m., the development of smoke diminished.
A total of eleven people were injured, including ten emergency personnel. Five people were transported to hospitals.
The two missing persons were reportedly located around 3:00 p.m. by rescue dogs. Turns out they're both dead. At first it was assumed that the person was dead.
The entire FF Sankt Augustin was released from action. Approximately 30 members of the Bonn professional fire brigade, some of whom were off duty, were alerted to the corpse recovery.
At around 4:15 p.m., Mayor Max Leitterstorf gave a press conference in the town hall, but did not confirm the death of the emergency services and gave almost no information about the operation, as did the press spokesman for the fire brigade.
At around 6:30 p.m., the technical relief organization THW was alerted. A construction consultant and a deployment security system were deployed to clarify whether the building was in danger of collapsing. In addition, the drones of LG Hangelar were used.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of the Interior, Herbert Reul, arrived at the scene around 7:00 p.m.
Numerous relatives of those who had died also gathered at GH Niederpleis.
After the post-extinguishing work was largely completed and the roof had collapsed, the Bonn fire brigade began to gain access to the building, for which purpose the fire-fighting support vehicle and the telehandler were used.
Furthermore, a suction excavator from Tiefbau Meißner was used.
At around 9:00 p.m., the excavator from THW Bergisch Gladbach and Licht from Siegburg were alerted.
Around 11:00 p.m., the bodies were recovered from the rubble. Almost all the emergency services deployed stood guard during the evacuation.
A total of over 300 emergency services were deployed. At peak times about 270 at the same time.
The BF Bonn left the site at around 1:00 a.m.
The Beuel firefighting unit manned fire station 2 until around 2:00 a.m.
However, work continued and the road remained closed.
Numerous passers-by ran through the site almost throughout the entire operation, which was also due to the bad barriers, or some of them were non-existent.
Among other things, the entire FF Sankt Augustin, alarm groups and/or other firefighters from Hennef, Königswinter, Niederkassel, Eitorf, Rheinbach, Alfter, Bornheim, the district fire brigade, the BF Bonn, several PSU teams, some from the Rheinisch Bergisch district, were deployed , several emergency doctor vehicles, ambulances, numerous ambulances, care units, about ten radio patrol vehicles, the KDD, fire investigators, THW local branches Siegburg, Beuel, Bergisch Gladbach and Hürtgenwald.
    Editor's note:
Even after 3:00 a.m. (16 hours after the start of the operation), there was no press release from the fire brigade, the city of Sankt Augustin, or the Rhein-Sieg district police.
