Growing on rooted Juniper Cuttings, year 2 & 3

- After getting your Juniper cuttings to root, how do you grow them on to get them set up for tuning into a good bonsai?
Here I show the struggles one can have with loads of cuttings in a single tray, such as Juniper Scale, rootrot and other propagation challenges. Follow the cuttings in year 2 & 3 of their life!

Nice that you share your genuine results over time compiled into a single video. I just wanted to mention that I since I started covering my propagation bin with clear plastic and using a heat pad underneath, rooting success rate is now close to 100%. I've experimented with cuttings left over from pruning, like itoigawa and kishu juniper, as well as boxwood, vitex, myrtle, trident maple, etc. I plan to make them available to our younger club members because it has gotten harder to find reasonably priced material compared to back when I was starting out in bonsai. Sounds like you have a similar motive.

Great info! I've had mixed results with juniper cuttings so this is quite helpful. Good to know that pyrethrin-based sprays work on juniper scale!!

This saves me doing the same video. I had very similiar results although didnt get a scale issue. All my Itoigawa cuttings rooted from last years as did some from the year before. I will probably look to pot them on in the autumn time. I must make sure i have some scale spray available as I think I may have seen that on a few of my larger chinensis :(
Really nice videos Jelle! I saw the one from last year when you took the cuttings as well. It inspires me to try this as well. I bought some small Itoigawa’s last year (just really inexpensive ones for trying things) and have one big one which I will take the cuttings from. I really enjoy the small one’s, but I think it’s even more fun to propagate them yourself as I see this.
I was wondering about one little thing; If you don’t have vermiculite, will a really fine bonsai soil mixture do as well or has vermiculite some properties that help them root better? I sift the really small particles out of the soil, and was the dust out of it and use that on top of forest plantings, grow moss and use it for little bonsai. Is vermiculite better for cuttings you think?

I propagated by seed even when they say is very complicates and takes two years...I just kept them one winter in the fridge an then germinated them indoors with wet paper...a little percentage germinated but still a got near a hundred plants... Now I did cuttings and at list they are green in a big percentage
