4TH GEN TOYOTA 4RUNNER COLLAPSABLE LEAVE IN BED PLATFORM

  • This is a bed platform and drawer system for a 4th generation Toyota 4Runner 2003-2009. The skull thing is a bottle opener.
    I used hanger bolts like these:
    www.homedepot.com/p/1-4-in-20...
    Just drill a pilot hole in the leg, then on the hanger bolt you tighten two nuts together, then you can drive the stud or hanger bolt into the leg. Just Google jam nut and you can figure it out. Pretty simple.
    To attach the leg assembly to the plywood I used these tee nuts:
    www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-...
    Simply drill a hole where you want the leg and tap in one of those nuts. Hope this helps!
    This is the matress we use:

    I've looked at A LOT of these and this one is the most room efficient one so far! The screw-in legs are a great idea as it avoids any kind of folding legs on top instead.

    I'm so happy I found this video. So far you are the only one I've found who has a drawer system, with a sleep platform extention, with a similar concept to what I had in my head. I just got a 5th gen recently and I really want a drawer system/sleep platform while still keeping my back seats and this is exactly what I was thinking of!

    Thank you!!!
    I came across your video in searching for a bed platform, I was very impressed with how versatile your design was.
    I'm retired and on a fixed income.
    I get away and overland for a few days at a time and with a few modifications, I used your design this week and it turned out awesome.
    I cut a couple of extra legs and used a couple more hinges so I can still use the single back seat and fit my single tri-fold 31" mattress at the same time or put the single seat down and use my tri-fold full mattress. I have a 2018 5th gen 4Runner and can't wait to get away and do some dispersed camping in the snow this winter and sleep comfortably.
    Thank you again for posting Cheers!!!

    I tried a platform in my 2007 with 1/2in plywood...it definitely worked, but I think I would want the 3/4in instead. Thanks for showing your design, seems to work well for you. I cannot start on platform until I can get that remedied. CHEERS!

    Use paraffin to wax whatever slides. I've found that waxed hard wood rails are as good as metal, mechanical drawer slides and more reliable over time. Paraffin instead of a candle or soap because it would be less likely to attract bears.

    Do you ever regret going with black? I love black (especially how it looks with silver rims), and I also bought a black one…but I’m second guessing my decision to not go with silver instead because of how hot it gets in the sun during summer!!! I’m even referring to my decision now as choosing “Oven Black.” There will definitely be situations where I could nap in a silver 4Runner, but not a black one.
    Just recently I found myself wanting to nap in the parking lot during a long lunch break for a day long conference, ‘Oven Black’ definitely ruined that decision, and it wasn’t THAT hot, so silver would have worked. I could of course make an adjustment IF there’s an option to find a shaded area, but the entire lot was in direct sunlight.

    Did you just screw a piece of wood into the bottom of the sleeping platform to act as a drawer stopper or are they pretty snug and can handle weight/stay level without that? Thanks for sharing!

    • @wallinkevin
      @wallinkevin  4 роки тому

      Hey! Yeah those dowells act as legs and support the weight of the sleeping platform. They are not drawer stops. They are surprisingly sturdy honestly. Even I wasn't sure what to expect but they've held up great over time. Thanks for watching!

    Question for you buddy. On our 4th gens, the folded down back seat creates an incline in the back platform. Does your design level out the platform, or does it incline as well? Just curious, and thank you for a great video and design! Cheers mate.

      Im guessing he made the screw-in legs different sizes to accommodate the incline.

    @wallinkevin do you have build plans for this buy chance?

    Question? I wanna do a build like that in my 99 dodge Durango and do you have 3rd seating in those? And also how did you do the screw pegs? I really like that idea since I have 3 kids kinda getting rid of my 3rd row wouldn't be an option! Thanks for any input 😊

    • @wallinkevin
      @wallinkevin  4 роки тому +2

      My 4runner does not have a 3rd row seat. I've seen some 4runners that do though. I'm sure you could do something similar in the durango!
      I used hanger bolts like these:
      www.homedepot.com/p/1-4-in-20-tpi-x-2-in-Coarse-Standard-Steel-Plain-Hanger-Bolts-4-Pack-809321/204273740
      Just drill a pilot hole in the leg, then on the hanger bolt you tighten two nuts together, then you can drive the stud or hanger bolt into the leg. Just Google jam nut and you can figure it out. Pretty simple.
      To attach the leg assembly to the plywood I used these tee nuts:
      www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-20-Zinc-Plated-Tee-Nut-4-Pack-802301/204274194?MERCH=REC-homepagehorizontal1_rrNA-204274194--N
      Simply drill a hole where you want the leg and tap in one of those nuts. Hope this helps!

    Did you use a layer of ply as a base and then screw the uprights of the drawer system into that or is it just sitting on the carpet of the cargo space?

    • @wallinkevin
      @wallinkevin  3 роки тому

      It's just sitting on the carpet.

    How tall is the box with out the mattress? Wondering if my 9inch box “planned build” and then mattress will give me NO head room. I am in a sequoia which gives me a little more clearance. Appreciate you letting me know your box height?

    • @wallinkevin
      @wallinkevin  3 роки тому +1

      The sequoia should definitely help with interior space. Unfortunately I sold the 4runner a while ago. All that I can tell you is that I built it to the same height as the wheel wells.

    hi, what type of wood did you use? what type of screws did you use to assemble the pieces together? thanks

    • @wallinkevin
      @wallinkevin  4 роки тому

      Hey! I used pre finished 3/4" pine plywood from Home Depot, however I wouldn't recommend it. Although it works and is incredibly rigid, there were lots of voids in the plywood. From what I've read, Baltic Birch plywood would have been the better choice. I believe I used 2 inch #8 construction screws for most of the build. Good luck!
