  • This video details the rear cargo bed platform and drawer storage system that I built in my 3rd gen (02) 4runner. This is a low-cost and relatively simple build that my father and I completed in one day. I tried to include as many details as possible, but know that I certainly missed some instructions. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any additional clarification.
    DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a carpenter. Enjoy the video, and definitely let me know if you have any questions!
    DIMENSIONS (I'd still recommend taking your own measurements):
    FRAME: 38 ⅝” x 38 ⅜” x 8 ½” (¾” ply top & back, 1 ½” x 7” sides, ½” ply bottom)
    DRAWER: 35” x 37 ¾” x 6 ⅞” (¾” ply front, sides & back, ½” ply bottom)
    REMOVABLE DRAWER DIVIDER: 5 ⅞” x 36 3/4 “ x ¾ “
    FALSE TOP: 33 7/16” x 20” x ½”
    MAIN BED EXTENSION: 25 ½” x 48” x ¾” (in-cut at 42” to account for ceiling when folding)
    EXTRA EXTENSION (seats removed): 8 ½” x 48” x ¾ “ (in-cut at 42” to match main extension)
    MAIN EXTENSION SUPPORTS: 1 ½” x 1 ½ “ x 5 ⅝”
    EXTRA EXTENSION SUPPORTS: 1 ½” x 1 ½” x 14 ¼”
    SIDE STORAGE (gas tank side): 38 ⅜” x 6 ¾” x ¾” (requires custom cuts to fit flush)
    SIDE STORAGE (non gas tank side): 38 ⅜ x 7” x ¾” (requires custom cuts to fit flush)

    This build is awesome! I’ve watched multiple other videos on building a drawer system and yours is the cleanest and most compelling one I’ve seen yet! I appreciate the cut measurements you include, but I wonder if you’d be willing to also show a list of raw materials so I know how many of each to purchase. Planning to do a nearly identical build in the near future and would love a simplified shopping list!

    I’m thinking and wondering if adding some UHMW along the top sections on the left and right far sides (on underside of the 3/4” ply top ) would help guide and support the drawer - was there a reason why you didn’t

    I'm going to do something similar in mine without the bed platform. I am also going to cut out homes along the 2x4 and in the base of the drawers housing to lighten it up. Using large pieces of ply like this makes it REALLY heavy and I'm not sleeping on it.

    • @nate-beard
      @nate-beard Рік тому

      The spare wheel is located under the truck, so the platform doesn't interfere with access. You just need to be able to access the tool under the rear passenger seat. There is a rod you place into your back bumper and twist. It then lowers the spare. There's videos on UA-cam that show the process.

    Very nicely done, Matt....I applaud the ingenuity that went into your design.
    Just starting on a similar build for my Taco and am leaning towards teflon or the polyethylene for the slides as well; the commercial metal slides are fiendishly expensive, and if they jam up when you're out in the boonies you could be screwed....I'm thinking the plastic slides are pretty much foolproof. Now that you've (likely) used it for a few months, are you happy with the plastic slides?
    Thanks for taking the time to post!

    Thanks for sharing this. I just got an 02 this year and am looking at doing something similar. I'm 6'5'' so I'm thinking I might use the drawer & false top to extend the bed. Any thoughts on that? (obviously that would mean leaving the hatch open to rain and bugs, but I figure on nice nights it would work. Also, roughly how much $ do you think this whole build costs? Lastly, is there anything you would do differently next time? Thanks again! -Nate

    • @mattieinthemountains1812
      @mattieinthemountains1812  3 роки тому

      Hi Nathan - I like the idea of using the drawer as a bed platform extension. My build is 74 inches long so you would only need 3 more inches to support your height. Only issue would be the difference in height between the top of the drawer and the platform (about 3/4 inches). My thought is you could just lay some clothes or a pillow down on the false top to fix the discrepancy. I'd recommend getting something like this - www.amazon.com/Napier-Sportz-Cove-61500-Minivan/dp/B01NA6NXB3/ref=asc_df_B01NA6NXB3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=218094726470&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4471697968747163508&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002424&hvtargid=pla-356353890943&psc=1 - so you can extend the drawer and not get bothered by bugs. I spent around $200 total for this build. The most expensive part was the wood. I'm really really pleased with the functionality and ease of use of this system. I might have gone with 2x10s instead of 2x8s to have a little more room in the drawers/understorage, but with your height I think 2x8s are still the way to go. Let me know if you have any more questions!

    Love the build Matt. My question is have you put a lot of weight on the platform, more specifically the rear part of the platform, closer to the lift gate. Reason why I ask is because I use my car to carry (sometimes) up to 2,000 pounds in the rear. Of course I know it’s wood so it’s possible it would break the platform but what would you say the weight capacity of this platform is?

    Those PE runners are a good idea. A lot of builds I've seen use drawer slides which sacrifice a good 1/2" to 1" on each side. Your build (or at least the video) is relatively new, but have you experienced any issues with this method?

    • @mattieinthemountains1812
      @mattieinthemountains1812  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! The strips are roughly 38” long (from the front of the frame to the back). The UHMW sheet I purchased was only 24” long so I did need to use multiple strips to account for the additional length. I used a table saw to cut them

      Matt, thanks for your timely response. I wasn't sure if your strips were 24" long or not. I appreciate the clarification.

      You mentioned you stapled the carpet but it looked like you just glued it and held it on with the piano hinges? I'm halfway into my build and am taking ideas from yours . Thank man, great video

      @@aaronsimpson8410 I used spray adhesive and also stapled the edges. Carpet hasn’t budged yet! (7 months in)

    How do you prevent the drawer from moving out completely and falling on the ground? Is there any stop mechanism?
