To my understanding, he still owns that large house that he built. So I can say that he did make use of the money wisely, to an extent. I think the problem was all the clothes, cars, house items etc. But I've seen people blow their money in much worse ways than this. It didn't turn out extremely bad for him, at the end of it all. At least he still has the house and is earning rental income from it.
RAF must offer a compulsory financial education course for 6 months, before they pay you as a beneficiary. Beneficiaries who fail to attend this course must automatically forfeit the funds. This is just my personal recommendation.🙏

And the furniture he sold would have cost less than 10,000 when he sold it for beer. And out of that 285K, he would have spend close to 80k on clothes for himself, his sister and his wife.
This guy still has a solid home, despite all of the spending on friends which is wiser than he thinks. Either way a million Rands is change these days if you think about the cost of living. Flip only if he managed to stay away from those vultures he calls friends he would have been able to squeeze at least R250k into his bank account to think about on the day he eventually got sober.
