    I took a few classes in HVAC. I applied for scholarships and got in for completely free. My instructor Worked at a Company as a Supervisor. He mentioned the company needing a Helper/Scrapper. I expressed interest and got the interview . Got the Job. Im 19 ,didn’t expect to get the job thinking they weren’t going to take somebody my age seriously. Apparently i made a good impression on my instructor and the manager interviewing me.This is going to be my First full time job . Wish me Luck boys. I start in a couple weeks.

    April 2020 I was working as an operations/warehouse manager. Decided I wanted to get into hvac without going to school. Found an apartment maintenance job and learned a ton working on Goodman heat pumps for two years. Landed a dedicated HVAC residential service tech position in October and have already doubled my income and love the job. I still don’t know much, but I know enough that management leaves me alone to work and I teach myself along the way.

      Hey man any advice, I’m trying to find a dedicated hvac residential service tech position. I live in Ottawa , Ontario Canada. I’m licensed with my gas license. and I have gas piping experience for 2 years, worked as a water heater service technician with furnace and AC PM calls. Also, I have installation experience for hot water tanks, furnaces, AC’s etc . But it seems like companies are picky with their hiring selection or the position is not available for idk what ever reason that could be . 3 companies I’ve applied to I’ve expressed interest in a service position but the response I’m getting is that they have a install helper position available. I don’t know if all companies are like that where they make you start as a helper and build you up. Do I just keep looking and searching in hope of landing a service tech position?

    • @millenialmemoirs
      @millenialmemoirs 6 місяців тому +1

      @@hvac24 hey man, it’s hard to say cause I don’t know anything about the Ottawa job market. Sounds like you’re more than qualified for a basic maintenance or service technician role, but if the companies in your area are only wanting to hire guys as install helpers that might be your ticket in. What are you currently doing?

    • @hvac24
      @hvac24 6 місяців тому

      @@millenialmemoirs yea makes sense. Right now currently I’m gonna work a part time job at my old job in the restaurant. The old company I worked for laid me off and I’m glad they did because I was ensured for 4 months getting paid. At the same time the company was way too corporate. All they cared about was numbers. No appreciation for the workers. It was unionized too but wow the pay scale was unfair for the type of work they would make us do. Also, I would be paired with a different crew every day of the week. Which is ok, but after a while every person wants something done their own way and then you’d forget at times the way that person wanted it done. I am glad though I got hvac installation experience. There’s a local company next to my house they are a fairly sized hvac business nothing too crazy. They are the ones that said they could start me as a helper and I would work my way up. I think the best plan would just to start “green” and go from there. Take what ever I learned and apply it to the new hvac job

  • @specopstoon

    i recommend starting as a helper on a good install crew. it’s a right of passage and like the boot camp of the trade. you’ll learn a lot more of the skills you need to be a good tech plus some system design and building code. it’s also very valuable to know what install is all about. eventually you can then decide if you like install or service better and you’ll be a much more well rounded professional.

I had an interview the other day with a well known and growing company, but I'm sure they declined me from my lack of experience and knowledge in construction. their job search filter on indeed was set to entry level, but their description said "minimum 2 years HVAC experience." so I'm over here like WTH?? Then why is anyone teaching degree in technical colleges in elsewhere if you have to get into apartment maintenance or elevator maintenance in order to actually get into the field? Then people would have to be ripping you off because you're getting a useless degree that no one respects. And you have people in the field that have years of experience that are instructors and they know that this degree is useless. Nobody should have to do any other thing than to go to school for this and get trained properly in the first place. It makes the degree useless if you have to go and do some other job for a number of years in order to get something you should get with a degree.
    I've also worked with people personally before that will tell you that people that go to school are just college boys and they talk about them like they're some sort of useless person that is of an opposite political party or something. Those same people by the way will tell you you can go on UA-cam and learn everything you need in the first place. HVAC isn't installing satellites into orbit or anything like that
