    How much power could they have gotten out of that monster, if they had increased the compression ratios as much as they could with a reliable source of 150 Octane gasoline. The RR Merlin put out about the same power but was a smaller engine and would have choked on low grade Axis fuel. I'm told you could run the DB605 on regular old 87 Octane Unleaded.

    • @Bf-GAS
      @Bf-GAS  4 роки тому +1

      This "AS" engine was approved for 1850 DIN-PS (+ -2.5%) with B4 (87 octane) and MW-50 at 1.8 ata boost pressure.
      Max. 2000 DIN-PS at 1.98 ata boost pressure with C3 (95 octane) and MW-50 for a maximum of 5 minutes.

    • @Howie262
      @Howie262 2 роки тому +5

      DB 605 with 150 octane fuel would make a Merlin engine look like it was on training wheels. The allies targeting german synthetic fuel facilities was probably the smartest move in history. Because Any German fighter with 150 octane and it would have been clapping p51s and spitfires cheeks daily. No one brings this up because the brits want everyone to think the Merlin v12 was the best thing since sliced bread.

      @@Bf-GAS Funny the power to weight rating even at 1000KW, is higher than the certified engines today. Most engines today are around 1kw/kg, where as this is from 1.6-2KW/kg. Current aviation engines are so far behind. Not sure why so many are still air cooled. USA took over after the war and then engineering took a step backwards.

      You don't increase the CR to increase power on these engines, it already had a higher static CR than a Merlin, what you are able to do with higher octane fuel is it allows you to increase the boost pressure.

    Where is the oil sump in this engine? Is it external to the block? Also, how do they prevent oil from seeping into the combustion chambers with the pistons at the bottom?

    • @Bf-GAS
      @Bf-GAS  9 місяців тому

      The oil sump is the valve cover, where the oil is pumped back into the circuit.
      Oil runs around the liner and is drained into the valve covers

      +Bf-109 G14AS What was the reason for switching to plain bearings?

    • @redfax
      @redfax 6 років тому +1

      I was reading a technical analysis made by some US engineers on a captured DB601-A, and they were surprised they were using roller bearings for the big end. They thought it might be because the engine would be required to provide takeoff power on short notice, i.e. with cold lubricants etc. Did the -605 have cold operating power restrictions because of the lack of roller bearings?

    • @jowenjv4463
      @jowenjv4463 9 років тому

      +93KAPLAN Oui mais il faut le bon serrage, ce qui serait bien serait de regler au hasard une force de serrage avec une dynamo (etant donné que c'est les attaches des bielles au vilebrequin autant choir un couple plutot fort, a la vue des 1500 (ou 1800 en fonction de la version) destriers qui vont galoper la dedans) et d'appliquer ce meme couple a chaque cylindre. Mais ce couple de serrage, si il est uniforme, reste hasardeux.
