Its cool to see how this is done, thanks. I just came up a giant chunk of amythist with many of the rough chunks on it. It also has some kind of other inclusion on it in it. How do these giant pieces get polished? I’d like to clean it up and take good care of it but really have zero idea where to start. Thank you for any tidbits you might share :)
I guess it depends on what your goal is with the piece. If it is just to polish one of the surfaces you can use hand sanders that work with water to put a on a polish. You could also cut off an end in a rock saw and use a flat lap to polish the flat surface though that requires some expensive equipment.
There’s some people online that you can ship it to and pay them to work it... but research who you send it to and recognize they may have to cut it into smaller pieces or grind a lot away. I watch videos and get inspired. You can start by soaking it in citric acid to clean it... then just clear coat or set in epoxy resin, if you like the look of it rough.
Thanks for this great vid. can you or anyone explain the pros and cons of the upright wheel method vs the flat lap for shaping amethyst? I want to make a luscious amethyst into a modified rectangular sugarloaf tapered flatter at the top, wider at the bottom, more like a jolly rancher candy smoothed down after sucking on it. Picture the jolly rancher sliced 2/3 on the horizontal axis, then set in a dainty diamond surround bezel. thanks, friends! edit: i only have a Speedmaster diamond saw (water fed), and dremel tools with many grits, diamond bits, diamond polishing pastes, buffing & grinding wheels. I've gpt an old Craftsman bench grinder I wanted to convert for this, too. Is that an option. From having dremel polished rough opal, I know cooling with water is essential. So that would be a problem with a retro-fitted bench grinder, eh? I am not made of money & have to think outside the $500 High Tech diamond flat lap box. 🤣
My brother and I found a huge amethyst Pocket in the mountains just before the Mexican boarder. I have a whole bucket of raw amethyst rocks now. The stones that you cut and polished, what are they worth. My brother and I are both Artist and I have an Art degree. I may take some of mine and make some jewelry out them
Is there any way I can use my belt sander for this? Maybe with diamond paper? What belt should I use for it? This is awesome by the way. Love the video.
You have to use something that can be done wet (without being electrocuted). The fine dust from sanding dry stone is very unhealthy to breath. Thanks for you nice comments.
i have a question? or two, have you used crystal clear epoxy to fill in the chips?,,, have you ever stabilized any of your rocks? i use acetone and a crystal clear epoxy then let stand for a couple of days to dry in a warm place,,, thank you for the tips
@@rojosmojo1 i found out about this the hard way,, i spilled the old oil all over the floor when i was changing the oil in the saws and found some slabs that were knocked into my giant mess, so i heaped some oil sorb onto them and finished cleaning up my mess, when i got around to cleaning the slabs it didnt take so long to deoil them with dawn dish soap and semi-hot water, been using this ever since
when i buy gemstones for jewelry making, they can go for $2-15 for one- it really depends on the size and quality of the stone. Dark, consistently colored amethyst is rarer and will be priced higher.
I bet that will make a pretty ring or necklace for someone.
Ok I see how your doing I’m working a piece of purple amethyst and just looking for a few tips etc. pretty cool video thanks bro
🌿😝. What a absolute waste of a beautiful Crystal 🤬

Great video. I'm curious as to why you didn't use a rock tumbler.
TL,DW: buy $5000 worth of tools and you can cab stuff too!
Good Job! Congratulations!
